The Clinic
The clinic by Cate Quinn is a thriller novel that is set at a remote rehab location for the rich and famous. The story is told from two perspectives. One is Meg, sister to Harley Banks, who died while at this rehab facility. The other is Cara, the manager of the facility.
When Haley Banks dies, this causes suspicion. The police begin to investigate what is deemed a suicide, but are met with resistance from the owner, Dr. Lutz.
Struggling with her own addiction to alcohol and oxy, Meg decides to investigate the death of her sister herself by admitting herself into this rehab facility. While there, she comes up with many theories of what may have happened to her sister. Some of them are more believable than others. (She’s not always lucid due to her detox.)
Cara begins to question what really happened when Dr. Lutz is resistant to the police. While there, she discovers some of the stuff that was being covered up, as well as Dr. Lutz’ past.
All in all, I found this to be an enjoyable book. I wasn’t real impressed with the ending. Dr. Lutz didn’t really face any consequences for his actions and I think Meg and Haley’s relationship was rather strange. Also considering that the police thought that the suicide wasn’t actually a suicide, they were rather hands off most of the story. It seemed like their investigation dropped off once Meg was admitted.
I did enjoy the themes of addiction and trauma. Though, Meg’s trauma was weird. It was like she didn’t actually face any actual trauma, but her young mind molded the events at the time to make it seem like she was traumatized. The Matthew Price guy and the Queen of Hearts just didn’t really fully fit into the story for me. However, I think addiction was covered pretty well. Being sober is hard, and that’s evident in this book. I’m sure this was in part due to the author’s own struggle with addiction.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this book! This honest review is an exchange for a free ARC.

My favorite type of book: an unreliable narrator with unreliable characters. I was drawn in from the very first page. Meg's sister died while in rehab and her death is blamed on suicide. However Meg doesn't believe it and decides to check herself into the rehab facility to investigate her sister's death. The story alternates between Meg's point of view and Cara, one of the rehab workers. The author seamlessly alternates between the two with often times 2 separate plots playing out. It was easy to keep track of and there was no repetition between the two POVs ,which I appreciate. The author addresses some difficult issues with addiction and rehab while weaving a masterful thriller full of suspense and twists and turns. Many of the twists were unpredictable.
Don't skip out on reading the author's note. It will make the book that much more special. I applaud the author for sharing her story and congrats on writing your first book sober!
Thanks to Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Landmark, Sourcebooks Landmark for a digital ARC.

A thoroughly enjoyable mystery/thriller that will keep you guessing! Themes about trauma and family along with addiction.

I will say this is my first read from this author and I am so glad I requested it and got approved, What a wild ride. The writing was written so well from the author's descriptions of rehab to Meg's poker strategy to the facility itself. As far as twists go, there are more than usual. I suspected a few, but overall, the story keeps you guessing and definitely wanting more. I will say the ending did last a little longer than it should have but it was still good.

Now this is exactly what I want from my thrillers. A pager turner for sure. I honestly did not want to put it down. I’m off to find more by Cate Quinn now.

Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for providing me a copy of this ARC! I really enjoyed Black Widows by this author and the premise sounded really interesting, but unfortunately I was just not impressed or engaged by this book. None of the characters really seemed to have enough "soul" for me to care about what happened to them. The mystery through the middle of the story was interesting but the ending was so far-fetched I found myself rolling my eyes. Sadly, I can't recommend this title.

I don't want to say too much about the plot for risking of spoiling, but I will say: "Whoa." There are so many interesting elements to the writing, from the author's descriptions of rehab to Meg's poker strategy to the facility itself. As far as twists go, there are a LOT. I suspected a few, but overall, the story keeps you guessing. My only complaint is that the very end dragged out a bit. but that's a minor thing.

What a crazy ride. When Meg learns that her estranged sister has died in rehab, she is sure that there has been an error. Her very selfish and famous sister would never take her own life. Meg decides to take a (somewhat forced) hiatus from her undercover job with casinos to go into the rehab and find out more. The fact that Meg has her own issues with substances makes it both easier and harder. As an undercover agent of sorts she begins to learn more about the very exclusive and expensive clinic and the cutting edge work they are doing. The problem is that they seem to be unregulated and experimenting on their own clientele. Will Meg find out what happened to Haley? Will she survive the Clinic? If you like a gothic mystery, a twisted medical prison story or just love a complicated heroine, The Clinic is for you! #Sourcebooks #Landmark #TheCLinic #CateQuinn

While I don't think I have read "Black Widows", I really enjoyed "The Clinic". I own her first one so I'll be going back to read it as well.

Wow! This book had me on my toes throughout the entire thing! I read the whole book in less than 12 hours. It was that good!

3.5 stars. I generally love an isolated clinic story, but this one was a little disappointing. I think that the reason I was not feeling this story was due to all of the modern elements in the clinic. I am more partial to historic or historic leaning clinic reads.
