This has been a series I have been eyeing up for YEARS. When I saw that the author was re-releasing a "lavishly reimagined and revised" version, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to start.
This book was nothing like I had initially imagined and I'm saying that in the best way possible. In a dystopian-esque future, parts of England have been brought into the fold of what is now called the Republic of Scion. People with a number of different clairvoyant powers are sought to be weeded out of the world and the main character, Paige, is one of them. She holds a high-rank in a criminal syndicate and has forged a path for herself in a world that would love to see her dead. After being arrested and brought to the founders of Scion, she learns their world is in even more trouble than originally anticipated.
Okay soooooo. Yeah. I knew going into this that it would be dark and gritty. They don't give books a dystopian tag without reason after all. What I didn't expect to be sucked into this amazingly intricate world that had layers of screwed-up-ness. The government was out to get clairvoyants, the Rephs were out to use their powers for their own gain. And there, through it all, was Paige. She was trying to do her damnedest to survive through it all and she DID because she's a badass and I love her.
The writing was engaging, I have a lot of questions that I can't wait to find out the answers to, and it was really just a good, solid book.

Samantha truly outdid herself on this edition. She took the book she already wrote beautifully and refined it into a masterpiece. Emphasizing things that come into play later, clarifying important details, and giving Paige a stronger (and sassier) voice. Samantha Shannon’s writing has grown in the 10 years since this book debut and it’s incredible to see how her writing has developed in a story I already adored.
I cannot wait for the rest of the book revisions and to continue this journey through the world of The Bone Season

"The Bone Season" by Samantha Shannon is an imaginative and gripping urban fantasy novel that introduces readers to a dystopian world filled with clairvoyant powers, political intrigue, and a young woman's fight for survival and freedom. With its unique world-building, complex characters, and fast-paced plot, this novel offers a captivating and thrilling reading experience.
Set in the year 2059, the story takes place in a future London where clairvoyants, individuals with supernatural abilities, are hunted down and persecuted by the oppressive government of Scion. Paige Mahoney, the protagonist, possesses the rare ability of dreamwalking, which makes her a valuable asset to the criminal underworld. When Paige is arrested and thrown into the world of Scion, she discovers a web of secrets, political maneuvering, and hidden agendas that threaten her life and freedom.
Samantha Shannon's world-building is one of the standout aspects of the novel. She creates a detailed and immersive setting where clairvoyants are divided into different types and abilities. The city of London is reimagined with a blend of futuristic technology and historical elements, resulting in a unique and atmospheric backdrop for the story. The intricacies of the clairvoyant society and its interactions with Scion add depth and complexity to the narrative.
Paige Mahoney is a compelling protagonist who is both strong-willed and vulnerable. Her determination to survive in a hostile world, her loyalty to her friends, and her refusal to be broken by the system make her a relatable and engaging character. The supporting cast, including enigmatic figures like Jaxon Hall and Warden, bring additional layers of intrigue and mystery to the story.
The novel's plot is filled with twists and turns, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as Paige navigates the dangerous terrain of Scion while uncovering the truth about her abilities and the hidden truths of the world around her. The tension and suspense build steadily, leading to a climactic confrontation that sets the stage for future installments in the series.
Shannon's prose is rich and vivid, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the story's world and emotions. The pacing is well-balanced, seamlessly blending action-packed sequences with moments of introspection and character development.
"The Bone Season" explores themes of identity, power, oppression, and resistance, making it a thought-provoking and resonant read. As the first book in a series, it successfully introduces readers to the complexities of its world while leaving enough questions unanswered to pique their curiosity for the sequels.
Overall, "The Bone Season" is an enthralling and creative urban fantasy novel that combines elements of dystopia, fantasy, and suspense. With its imaginative premise, well-crafted characters, and engaging storytelling, it is a must-read for fans of the genre and anyone looking for a thrilling escape into a richly imagined world.

Samantha Shannon is truly masterful at her craft, and I am so incredibly happy that she got the opportunity to go back and rework her debut novel The Bone Season.
When I read The Bone Season a few years ago, my biggest complaint was that the first few chapters were hard to digest due to the large info dumps and them being far too long. Shannon has taken the foundation of her debut, stripped away the superfluous information, and created a fluid and richly immersive story that will captivate readers from start to finish.
Paige Maloney is a dreamwalker, one of the rarest clairvoyants to exist, that works for a team of criminals under the tutelage of Jaxon Hall. Unfortunately, Paige winds up drugged, captured, and taken to Oxford where she endures a whole different race of beings, the Rephaites. Now Paige must trust the mysterious Warden in charge of her even though her days are numbered.
Paige Maloney is hands down one of my favorite protagonists. She’s the definition of fighting to the very end even when all odds are against you. I immediately fell in love with her confidence, bullheadedness, and sense of justice. Paige is the type of person that you’d want on your side and not to make an enemy of…also, her ability is terrifying.
One of my absolute favorite parts of this book is the worldbuilding and intricate magic system that Shannon creates. She has left no detail spared, which I thoroughly appreciated. Also, when it comes to writing altercations and fight scenes, I swear Shannon makes you feel like you’re a part of the action…none of the gory details are spared.
If you haven’t started The Bone Season series, now is the perfect time to start!
Thank you to Bloomsbury Books for providing a review copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.

A big thanks to NetGalley and BloomsBury for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
It's Bone Season you can't go wrong.
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon is a fantasy novel set in the safe city of Scion. The year is 2059. For two centuries, the Republic of Scion has led an oppressive campaign against unnaturalness in Europe. In London, Paige Mahoney holds a high rank in the criminal underworld. The right hand of the ruthless White Binder, Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare and formidable kind of clairvoyant. Under Scion law, she commits treason simply by breathing. When Paige is arrested for murder, she meets the mysterious founders of Scion, who have designs on her uncommon abilities. If she is to survive and escape, Paige must use every skill at her disposal – and put her trust in someone who ought to be her enemy.
Come on, it's The Bone Season! You can't go wrong with this series! Read it! Read it right now!

Samantha Shannon's book The Bone Season is a must read for anyone looking into a cozy sit down read. I was blown away that this work originally was Shannon's debut and is being republished today after receiving some edits. Reading about a futuristic Oxford was really interesting and Paige's coming of age tale was really well done! I will definitely be reading book 2!
Thanks to #NetGalley and Bloomsbury USA for an advanced copy.!

I'll be honest. I tried reading this book a few years ago, and ended up stopping after Paige made it to Sheol I because it went in a WILDLY different direction than I was anticipating. Then after hearing that the series is going to be revised, it piqued my interest again so I was very excited to be approved via Netgalley for the new version!
It definitely wasn't at all what I was expecting, and it leaned a lot more into the sci-fi/dystopian aspects than the fantasy aspects in my opinion (I thought it was going to be heavier on the fantasy elements). It did take me a little bit of time to get into the story and warm up to the characters, but I ended up really loving Paige and Warden!
I'm definitely curious as to how the rest of this series will go, and knowing that she plans on revising at least the next book, I'm absolutely going to read that when it comes out!
The only reason I didn't give this a full 5 stars is mainly because it took me so long to get into the story and understand all the terminology, and I'm still not clear on what exactly the Rephaites are (angels? aliens? ghosts since they have ectoplasm?)
I can't speak to how the revisions improved the original story, but I can say that the writing was great, and definitely fits with what I've come to expect from Samantha Shannon.

Thank you so much to Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to re-read one of my favorite books of all time, this time fully realised the way the author wanted it to be.
I loved this new and updated version of this much-beloved book that elevated it to a more mature and detailed version of itself. Paige seems more fully-realised in this new version, much like how her character acts in the more recent installments, so it seems more plausible that the series only takes place across a few months and years, rather than a decade of the author's life. In the original publication, I remember loving the banter between Warden and Paige, but felt their relationship moved too quickly. In this version, their relationship is more fleshed out and detailed, making their inevitable transition to romance more realistic timeline-wise. I also loved the additional depth given to some of the side characters that in the original seemed to only exist to further the plot, but in this version now act like fully-realised people.
I'm so excited for more people to discover this series, just as I was to dive back into it once more.

I would like to give 5 stars to this masterpiece but being the first of a saga I hold back.
Paige is a very strong protagonist, a little stupid at certain moments, but human, strong and tenacious!
She was my favorite character throughout the book and I never stopped rooting for her.
In second place instead there is, unexpectedly, the Dean Arcturus.
Unexpected because at the beginning I didn't find anything special in this character, however, being from the dark side I had to imagine that I would end up loving him crazy.
I've never held my breath this long for a finale; until the last page I feared that everything was falling apart and that it would be too good if it ended as I had thought.
Only thing it took me a while to enter the world: full of characters, names and classes.
It wasn't immediately easy to navigate through it, but once you get past the first hundred pages you start traveling as if it were your home (hopefully not).
Wonderfully created! I'd like to know what's going on in Shannon's head!
I loved this book and will no doubt continue with the saga!
I'm really glad I read it!
Paige, Arcturus, Seven Dials...I'll be back soon!
The new Bloomsbury edition is fantastic both for the re-edited content and for the wonderful cover... exhibit it in a museum!!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bloomsbury USA for providing me with this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
The Bone Season is out tomorrow everywhere...don't miss it!!

The Priory of the Orange Tree and A Day of Fallen Night are the only books that I had previously read by Samantha Shannon. I thoroughly enjoyed these books, but I had not previously read any of The Bone Season Series. Therefore, my review of this book is based solely on the tenth anniversary edition. I cannot compare the quality of the improvements from the first edition of the book to this one as I have not read the first edition. I found that the author’s ideas were expressed clearly in this edition of the book. Personally, I felt that this book was well written, and I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen next. This book is a combination of fantasy and dystopian genres. The first couple chapters give the reader an introduction to Scion, (the corrupt society where the book takes place) and we learn more about the place along with the main character in the story. This book left me wishing for more character development for some of the characters, but I’m guessing that some of this is being left for books later in the series. Overall, this is a bit of a slower paced novel, but I felt that the pacing wasn’t too bad, and I think that this book is good at setting the foundation for the rest of the books in the series. I will wait until the revised sequels are published to enjoy the rest of the series. The author has made a disclaimer that if you jump from this book to the rest of the previously published series that you may notice minor inconsistencies. I commend Samantha Shannon for going back and rewriting portions of her debut novel to improve the book for future generations of readers. This book will not be for all readers, but as a first-time reader of this series, I’m excited to get my hands on the physical copy of this book that I have pre-ordered.
Thank you to Bloomsbury USA, Bloomsbury Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bloomsbury for the ARC of the revised 10th anniversary edition of The Bone Season!
I have not read the originally published version, but I did briefly compare the ARC with my original copy hardcover. It's been sitting on my shelf since I read and enjoyed Priory of the Orange Tree, but I'm glad I waited until the revised version to pick it up. The story is an alternate universe, dystopian Europe where the Republic of Scion has been in control for two centuries. There are people in this world called "unnaturals" who each have some type of mental power (there is a great new reference guide in the back of the book that details all the different powers in this world). Scion wants to get rid of these people, so they have to hide. When our main character and dreamwalker, Paige, is arrested for murder, she is sent to a type of training/rehabilitation camp in a twisted version of Oxford. There the unnaturals are treated as lessers by the ruling beings that are not of this world. Now Paige must survive and escape while figuring out how to dismantle Scion.
I'd put this in a contemporary fantasy/sci fi category and think people who enjoy Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas would enjoy it. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

It’s been a really long time since I’ve read a book like The Bone Season. It’s a little bit fantasy, a little bit sci-fi and a little bit dystopian. There’s so many elements of our world in it that it feels like some crazy alternate universe and I’m totally here for it. It is SO unique and interesting and I can’t believe this is a story Samantha Shannon wrote when she was so young! The absolute talent!!
Paige works for an underground crime syndicate, forced into the life due to the fact that she has extraordinary powers. When she finds herself drugged and kidnapped, there’s a lot more to the world than she initially thought. There’s a hidden city controlled by a race from the netherworld and they’re just about to start a new Bone Season.
The Bone Season is SO compelling, our main character Paige is so strong and capable but has such a vivid back story. Samantha Shannon set this book up perfectly for a series and it’s definitely one of those series you feel the need to absolutely binge. This tenth anniversary edition is a real treat and I hope some more people pick this up that might have been put off by the fact that it’s YA fantasy.(Honestly, I was one of those people.) It’s nuanced, layered and smart and a great fantasy read for anyone!

I had first read The Bone Season in October 2022, and I thought it was fantastic then. This revision is a nice revisit to the story for veterans given that it has some differences, and I also believe it'll make the introduction to this world even more effortless for new readers.

I received an ARC from the publisher to read and review. Quoted excerpt/s may change in the final print.
There was a time back in 2017 when I made The Bone Season my whole personality. That was the first time I read it. Fast forward to February of 2021 when I decided to do a reread to prepare myself for The Mask Falling. It is now 2023 and I feel lucky to be back in this world and meet Paige and Warden again “for the first time.”
Long time fans would definitely love this reimagined version like I did. And new readers, prepare to be obsessed. You will fall hard and fall fast.
I’m gonna admit I no longer remember most of what happened in the original version so I can’t say for certain what changed and whatnot. But I do know that my love for this series has grown even fiercer. Paige and Warden are just as amazing as I remember. Seeing Seven Dials in person has made it to the top of my bucket list. And Samantha Shannon remains one of my favorite fantasy authors ever.
The author has been sharing some behind the scenes on her writing of TBS book five… it has made me both beyond excited and a little bit scared. (Samantha Shannon has a record of wreaking havoc on my fragile heart.) But at least I have the TBS Tenth Anniversary edition to help me get through all of that. I cannot wait to hold a finished copy!

Absolutely stunning. I loved this whole series beyond words and am so thrilled they’re getting anniversary editions.

In "The Bone Season," Samantha Shannon paints an enthralling dystopian world that transports readers to the year 2059, where clairvoyance isn't a gift but a dangerous curse. Shannon is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors of all time. With a dynamic and resilient heroine at its center, this novel invites readers to question the boundaries of power, identity, and freedom. Shannon's ambition is evident in her creation of a world both extraordinary and eerily plausible, and her imaginative storytelling sets the stage for a promising series that holds the potential for even greater exploration in its subsequent installments.

(Thanks Netgalley for the eARC!) I was really pretty excited to see that Shannon was revisiting this book. My original thoughts for The Bone Season were pretty mediocre (3 stars), and while I wasn't opposed to continuing the series, I wasn't rushing off to find a copy of book 2 either. The revised version had some definite improvements in terms of the writing. Some of my original complaints, the info-dumping in the opening chapters, and the stilted chemistry between Paige and Arcturus remains. I'm raising my rating a half star, 3.5 and am probably more likely to continue the series in the future (ESPECIALLY IF WE GET MORE BEAUTIFUL COVERS LIKE THIS, BLOOMSBURY!!!!!! I am the kind of read who will buy a knowingly 3-star read if it looks pretty on my shelves.)

HOW has it taken me 10 years to finally pick up this series! I've seen friends recommend it so when I saw the 10 year anniversary available on here, I knew I needed to try it out! and once I got the hang of the world and it started to make sense to me, I was soaring through the pages and completely invested. the fmc develops a lot in the bookend was really enjoyable. I also really enjoyed the side characters, which is such a fun bonus in fantasies. I'm excited to continue the series.

Let me just say it. This book is about as close to perfection as it gets for me. A futuristic dystopian sci-fi/fantasy adventure set in London and Oxford with a fantastic mouthy and violent FMC willing to fight the patriarchy to obtain justice for the oppressed? YES PLEASE. Throw in a hot and grumpy giant and a bunch of ghosts and you have what is one of the best books I’ve ever read.
Reading this book was really an experience - by the time I was just 10% into the book, I knew I had fallen in love. This was my first encounter with this particular series, so I can’t speak to the changes that the author has made since her initial publication, but I thought the writing was superb. The world in which this story takes place is very complex, and the information is given to the reader in such a way that even when it doesn’t exactly all make sense yet, it’s still entertaining and intriguing. And the character development! Paige Mahoney may very well be my favorite protagonist of all time. Yep, I said that. But I loved so many of the other characters as well - I am dying to find out more about a few of them!
I’ve already decided to wait until all the revised editions come out in paperback next year so they can look beautiful on my shelves and I can binge them all without coming up for air. I will absolutely be re-reading this book and recommending it to other readers. If you’ve read Shannon’s other books you know that these aren’t fluffy beach reads. Her books really make you work as a reader and use your brain to put all the pieces together - but the result is an absolute masterpiece.
Thank you NetGalley and Bloomsbury for the opportunity to read the Advance Reader’s Copy in exchange for an honest review. Hands down the best ARC I have ever read!

I did not have the pleasure of reading this book before it was rewritten and reworked all these years later, but I know this must be a much more accurate representation of Shannon's incredible writing and storytelling talent. This was such an amazing book, and I will be highly recommending it on my socials.
This epic fantasy/dystopian book is filled with forbidden love, found family, mythological references, spirits, enemies to lovers, and a vast world-building setting that involves the criminal underworld and the real underworld.
This was an incredibly interesting book one of a seven book series and I cannot wait for the rest to be released.
Tysm for the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this one.
