While the previous volumes in the series were good the third volume has really brought the it in to truly excellent territory. There's enough of an ensemble now that Sui Ishida can do what he really thrives at: making you fall in love with characters from all walks in life and now there's sufficient stakes as well.

In this volume we are following Tokio and Ely as they strive to become choujin protectors. They are working hard during their classes and making progress towards becoming protectors. His friend Azuma is bored in school and really wants to help but there's not much that he can do. I'm not going to spoil anything but there were some fantastic twists and turns in this volume that I definitely did not see coming. Overall, I think that this is a better volume than the first two.

It took a couple of volumes to really get going, but volume three of Choujin X delivers. For one, this volume focuses more on the antagonists, shedding some light on who they are and why they can be so dangerous. The second point in this volume's favor has to do with a twist at the end of it. The status quo is shaken, giving a bit more potential to an otherwise fun take on a darker people with powers tale. Or perhaps I should call them obsessions instead?

My interest in this series is starting to wane a bit, much like it did for the mangaka's earlier famous work 'Tokyo Ghoul.' I will say, my interest has stayed engaged longer for this series, and I think the designs and premise are more intriguing, but the character development is starting to stagnate, at least for me. I know others will adore this series, though, so I'm glad it's getting these full, long volume releases in English.
