I really wanted to make it to the end of this book, but it was a no for me by about 30%. I didn't really connect with the characters, so that made it hard to keep reading

It wasn't bad, I remember it from 7 years ago. I can't remember the details anymore, it was too long ago.

I tried more than once to get into this book and never did. I do have difficulty reading first person, so it could just be me.

Once again I have found myself immersed in the MMA world of unsanctioned fight clubs. I can’t seem to tear myself away from these books, the men who star in them and the women who love them. There’s something very primal about these types of stories but if you don’t like violence, blood, rough language, and sex this isn’t the book for you. Against The Ropes is raw and raunchy it is also fascinating, entertaining, and I can only hope a sequel is in the works.

This is one of those books where I enjoyed both the hero and heroine immensely. Makayla is barely making it, she’s got college debts and is working a dead in low paying job. A temporary job at a fight club lands her in the sights of Torment, the club’s owner and best fighter. Because of Makayla’s violent childhood she abhors fighting but desperate for money she agrees to offer medical services to the club. Right away it is evident there is more to Torment than meets the eye; yes he’s a fighter but he show a caring side by how he treats his fighters and his opponents.

It’s very hard to review this book without spoilers, but I’m going to try because I want the story to have the same impact on you as it did on me. I will say that Makayla is conflicted about her feelings towards Torment (Max). He excites her but he also terrifies her with his intensity and the limits he pushes her to but she also enjoys the attention and safe harbor he provides. They dabble with BDSM, and yes Max is very controlling in the bedroom and even sometimes out but I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s a Dom. Max is also keeping some very big from Makayla. Makayla is fairly inexperienced and so the intense feelings she’s having cause her to fight what is developing between them. She has some secrets of her own that she refuses to discuss with Max.

While their relationship is front and center in this story the club and the fighters provides a colorful back drop. Makayla’s friend, Amanda, and her relationship turmoil also adds quite a bit to the story and places both women in a perilous situation. Although this is a serious story with some very intense moments there are several humorous moments including frequent texts between Makayla and Max and a couple of very interesting dining experiences.

On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and while I did enjoy the characters at times their interactions seemed a little immature for people their age and given the intense nature of this book that surprised me. However, Against The Ropes was well written, kept me thoroughly entertained, and left me wanting more. If that isn’t the sign of a good story, I don’t know what is.
