Dan Jones masterfully weaves his historical prowess into the fictional world. After greatly enjoying Essex Dogs, this little teaser tantalised me and now i settle in for the long wait until October!

My thanks to Aria & Aries - Head of Zeus for a three chapter extract of ‘The Wolves of Winter’ by Dan Jones.

This is Book 2 in Jones’ Essex Dogs Trilogy, set in Europe during the Hundred Years’ War. It follows the exploits of a small fighting band led by Loveday FitzTalbot. Obviously as this was a short extract it is hard to comment on the novel as a whole though it certainly grabbed my attention as I reconnected with the Dogs.

Among the scenes in these chapters I especially enjoyed young Romford’s fungi experience and the encounter between the Scotsman and the Flemish woman warrior, Hircent. I hope to learn more about her when the full novel is released in October.

In ‘Essex Dogs’ I had been impressed by Jones’ level of research combined with his storytelling skills and strong characterisation. Based on this sample, I expect more of the same. I will note that there is strong violence coupled with very salty language throughout.

In anticipation of the full novel living up to the first, I am rating this at 5 stars.

A visceral invocation of one of the bloodiest periods of medieval history. The characters are well drawn, with just enough of the modern (think Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, etc) to make them engaging without tipping right over into the realm of anachronism. Jones' day job as a historian really shines through in the details, too.

I was lucky enough to get to read three chapters of this novel in advance of publication. There is a ton packed into just the few pages I read. I was quickly pulled in and didn’t put it down until the pages were gone. I definitely want to know more about what is going on as let’s just say there’s a lot of intrigue and action in these first few pages. If the pacing keeps up, then this should be a fast paced and hard to put down book.

I look forward to the remaining novel being released.

Please be advised I received three chapters as an advance readers copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Dan Jones is one of my favorite historians, and as soon as I saw the chance to read the first few chapters of his upcoming historical fiction novel "Wolves of Winter", I jumped to download the widget!

I unfortunately have not read "Essex Dogs" yet, but, hope to soon! This excerpt from the second book in the "Essex Dogs Trilogy" is incredibly gripping. There are some things that I feel I would fully understand more having read the first book (such as characters' relationships to one another and past events), at least in these first three chapters. This is no fault of the author's at all, and I don't know if some of my questions would become clearer as the book goes on, but, regardless, I still was hooked from the first page, and plan to read the series.

Mr. Jones has such a powerful way of transporting the reader back in time, and immersing the reader in the world of the story.

I do feel that the language was on the heavy side profanity-wise. While I understand why it was spoken in certain moments, at times it felt a bit jarring for me.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Head of Zeus -- an Aries Book for the sneak peak ARC of the first few chapters of this book!

After reading and really enjoying Essex Dogs by the author, I was quite excited to hear about Wolves Of Winter. Even more so that Netgalley have released an early snippet from the new book! Jones writes such compelling characters and engaging, gritty plot lines. With a strong start, this brilliant historical fiction writer is bound to deliver a just as strong and unique book. Excited to read more! Thank you to the writer and Netgalley for this copy to read and review.

Enjoyed these first few chapters and I'm excited to see where it goes next! A wonderful mix of historical accuracy and pleasant storytelling to humanise the characters.

I read the first chapter of this sample. The text described a band of mercenaries picking over the battlefield for spoil after their employer is killed, along with any hope of being paid.

Like many I was hooked from the first book so having to wait out the lead time for the next Essex Dogs. This taster confirms worth the wait and rarely have I looked forward to a book with such anticipation.

The book opens with dramatic prologue featuring the Captain, a shadowy figure often mentioned in the first book. Then the story skips forward a year to the aftermath of the battle of Crecy as we find the Essex Dogs uttering their customary filthy curses as they seek to salvage something - anything - that might be of value from the corpse-strewn battlefield. After all, as we learned in the first book, they fight for money not principles. I loved the first book and this teaser tells me this second book is going to be terrific too.

The overuse (somebody else has counted) of crude language to show how tough and masculine these soldiers are seems to be unnecessary and detracts somewhat from the obvious skill of the writer. This aside these first three chapters set the scene for a heck of a story to follow.
My thanks to NetGalley for this excerpt.

I have been waiting and anticipating this next novel by Dan Jones.
The Dogs are now back for the next story by Dan Jones. I whizzed through the three chapters given to me to read and I can't wait to read the book. Lots of testosterone, but possibly a female who can fight as good as she gets,...
I can't wait to go with them to their next assignment, I'm packed guys, hand me a sword, I'm ready when you are
I love Love Love these guys

Dan Jones is one of my favourite historical writers his . I loved "Essex Dogs", and I love the chapters I have access too . He managed to keep historical facts pure while he give a sense of drama and made you see the characters as people not just old forgotten parts of story. Very nice book and will love to read it complete

Three chapters were kindly released to me by NetGalley as an e-reader ARC.

As someone that reads and enjoy Dan Jones’s non-fiction, I was shocked by now much I enjoyed his prose! It’s not often that authors can switch so skillfully between fiction and nonfiction.

This was only a small blurb of the full book, but I really liked what I read and I look forward to reading the full novel when it’s released in October!

The two things that I have as critiques are things that are more personal preference than anything, which is what resulted in a 4.5 star rating.
1) There was a bit of what seemed like unnecessary exposition that dragged the dialogue a bit, but nothing that was unbearable and something easily overlooked in a full length novel.
2) There was a fair amount of VULGAR language. I am by no means a prude, and I have a bit of a potty mouth myself, but there were some passages that were a lot, even for me. It was used as a device to demonstrate how rough and ready the soldiers are, but I felt that to the degree of which it was used a bit excessive.

The much anticipated sequel to Dan Jones' "Essex Dogs" follows the men to the siege of Calais, where the men are questioning their loyalties and have questions that have yet to be answered.

Fast-paced and action packed, with well rounded characters, this book leaves the reader wanting more. Again, Jones' knack for story telling and historical accuracy delivers.

A tantalizing snippet of this new novel, picking up where we left off, with a brand new female character. I can't wait for October to read more of the latest adventure with the Essex Dogs.

This teaser was exactly that, a teaser that I want more of. Three chapters are simply not enough, not once we are back in the world of Fitz-Talbot and the Essex Dogs. Dan Jones once again pulled me into the dirt and blood-soaked lives of these men, and their mission for more gold so they can go home and have comfortable lives. But what are they willing to do for that life?

I can not wait for the res of this book!

Hints of intrigue and plenty of action get this story off to a terrific start. I wish it wasn't sold as bloody and brutal as this suggested to me a rather blunt edged style of writing and doesn't do the book justice. These early chapters are enticing and entertaining and I anticipate a well planned and exciting story to come. As you would expect there is plenty of historical detail in the telling and the characters already appear well rounded even though I have not read their earlier outing. I great start to a no doubt much anticipated sequel.
