This book was pretty interesting in the extensive amount of research and history in it but it felt lacking in the emotional connection in portraying the victims and their relationships. Thought this would be more true crime and instead was a bit more historical context.

I received this book for free from Netgalley for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this. I hadn't heard this story before.

A very informative and academic approach at explaining not only the murders of Norma and Maria Hurtado, but also of the history of LGBT conflict and hate in the United States. I really appreciated how in depth everything was despite how short of a book it was.
This is a great book for anyone looking to understand the history of LGBT issues in the US.

When Jose Aviles couldn’t persuade his daughter Litia to leave her girlfriend he went to their home and shot Normas live in girlfriend Norma and her mother Maria. She lived with Norma and her mom for almost a year and for many reasons Jose could not get over it. In the beginning of the book I wanted to stop reading it I was getting so bored down and how many social justice crimes this man committed and what he did was atrocious don’t get me wrong but I felt spending that much time trying to blame race social lines economic status and whatever else Doug Greco blamed was a waste of time this is a horrible crime and it is no worse than any other murder committed and I get it he did it because his daughter was lesbian and she wouldn’t leave her girlfriend in the way he was raised that was a slap to his manhood Throughout the book I couldn’t help but agree with Mr. Greco and I have a Lotta respect for him he has done a lot for many put up on populations I think what bothers me the most is that we have such a victim mentality in this country and I felt like he was trying to make them into bigger victims then a person can possibly be he has done a great thing by telling Norma and Maria story and I can’t imagine the horror that poor Lydia must live with after having had this done by her father to the woman she love I found this book more social justice piece than a true crime story not to say I didn’t enjoy it I was just expecting something else. I would still highly recommend it because any time we can change peoples opinions it could never be a bad thing. I received this book from NetGalley and a publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
