The world of vampires is calling, and this book has everything needed to become fully immersed in the land of the undead. A hauntingly beautiful book that does well to educate the reader on the various origin stories of the iconic monster that lurks in shadows.

This book is stunning! I loved learning about Vampires and how they are portrayed in other Cultures. The artwork in this book is just so beautiful. My only issue is how short it is. There is so much about vampires that could have been added to this book, but for what it is, its good!

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Wide Eyed Editions for the eARC!

When I was a kid I was absolutely obsessed with the golden Egyptology book (if you know, you know), so I’ve always had a soft spot for guide books and histories written by a fictional author from an interesting perspective. In this case, Secrets of the Vampire: A Supernatural Sourcebook of Our Legend and Lore is the history of vampires and how they’ve changed throughout history, told by a vampire. It feels like a bit of a spiritual successor to the golden Egyptology book, and that’s so much fun.

I absolutely loved this book and gave it 4.5 stars. Despite being fairly short, the book manages to get through a lot of history in a way that was easy to read and remember, and is full of absolutely gorgeous illustrations. Despite the summary saying perfect for 9 - 14 years olds, I had a great time reading it and would recommend it to anyone who just wants to learn a bit about vampires, especially with Halloween right around the corner.

The only issue I had was with the ending, which felt a little bit abrupt. While I understand a book about a topic that is still ongoing won’t have a nicely tied up ending yet, it did feel like there needed to be something a bit more conclusory in the last chapter.

All in all, this was a great book. The art is absolutely gorgeous, and it packed so much information into seventy pages, so it was definitely worth the time.

Sequel to Secrets of the Witch

This is a beautiful coffee table book!

Matching its predecessor, Secrets of the Vampire is bursting with gorgeous full-color illustrations and historical insight. At a mere 80 pages, this is an incredibly quick read though I wouldn't mistake it as light. Some of the content is, in fact, quite morbid.

Julie and Elsa give blurbs about the rise of vampire lore and culture, touching on small details like silver and garlic and branching into public figures and events shaping the movement. Medieval to modern, this hardcover gives you plenty of topical and well-researched information on the subject.

I would not, however, expect to read this and walk away an expert. Secrets of the Vampire is more of a jumping-off point, giving the reader various topics to research further if they feel so inclined.

My only complaint with this series is that it chooses very odd POV at times, presenting information from the perspective of a vampire. Just as the first assumed the reader was a witch. I guess I just don't like the feeling of being profiled, accurate or not. It has a tendency to pull me out of the narrative.

Secrets of the Vampire is a must-read for anyone looking for an international history of vampires in their endless forms. Some you’ll already know, but others I’ll bet you’ve never heard of (I hadn’t). Educational and elegant, this short guidebook will entertain and enlighten you this spooky season and beyond.

This was such a beautiful, visually pleasing book that covers the history and variety of vampire lore across cultures. As someone who grew up with the Twilight craze and has continued to seek out vampire stories, this was a delight to sink my teeth into (lol) and expand beyond the fictional stories we see most predominantly and learn more about the lore. The art style is absolutely stunning and pulls everything together so well. It also makes the book approachable for a wide audience and I would recommend to our readers, especially those interested in gothic stories and mythology!

As someone interested in vampire folklore, this book was super interesting. I liked how it was separated by different regions of the world. The illustrations were also really fun.

An interesting guide to vampires, which gives a comprehensive history of their evolution in myths around the globe, while also partially demystifying their evolution in popular culture.
I did find it a little jarring that it was seemingly written from the perspective of a vampire, but it was done in a relatively half-hearted way - just the odd use of "our" or "my" here and there, which felt superfluous.
On the whole, a fun educational read.

Secrets of the Vampire is a beautifully illustrated guide to vampiric folklore through the centuries. I appreciate the nods to many different cultural interpretations of vampires, as well as the various depictions of vampires in media from Dracula to Twilight. A great guide to have in your back pocket for all your vampire lore needs.

The vampire non-fiction I wanted at 14 (though it's also charmingly narrated from a vampiric creature's perspective). This gave very cool insights, some of which were entirely new to me, beautifully framed by Laura Pérez' illustrations.

A wonderful read, I love the vampire myth and this was a great comprehensive history of one of my favourite subjects/characters. I thought it was beautifully illustrated throughout , I enjoyed the fact the narration is spoken from a vampire too.

4/5 stars

This book is super nostalgic, and reminds me of the peak Twilight days haha! I liked the art and the info, but it's pretty baseline info. Nothing too in depth, which fits with a ya/Twihard crowd 🤣 this was fun!

A nicely illustrated book but with a lot left to be desired.

I thought going into this book that I would find a lot of useful information in regards to vampires, their history, representation and characteristics. And, yes, it does contain that. But on a surface level. There's not enough detail about any of the topics mentioned in the index.
In regards to the style, the fact that the narrator speaks as if they're an actual vampire, really took away from the seriousness I expected from a non fiction book.
All in all, it is a pretty book with lots of illustrations and very general information about vampires that won't add much knowledge to those who are fans of these fanged criatures.

Secrets of the Vampire is a nonfiction book about vampires through history and different cultures, and where some of the ideas that show up in pop culture come from while also being "narrated" by a vampire. This is a great deep dive for any fans of Vampires but especially teens.

"The dark of night, blood, sickness, and now burial - is there any source of fear I can't embody for you, dear humans?"

Beautifully illustrated and carefully researched, Secrets of the Vampire traces the history of the myth from the origins to nowadays. Suggested to anybody into folklore.

This was a nice and easy overview of the history of the Vampire, both as the mythological creature and it’s role in popular culture. I also really enjoyed the artwork depicted throughout.

Certainly not extensive, but definitely an easy introduction to the vastness that is the Vampire.
