Thank you to Netgally, the publishers, and Joy Ellis

When I requested this book I was unaware that it was apart of a series, one that requires you to read the previous books for this one to make sense. I am unable to read all the previous books along with this one before the publish date. Therefore, I will rate this a fair 3/5 stars and will adjust the rating and review when I am able to read all the books in the series along with this one.

Not since Moriarty has there been a villain as devious and manipulative as Alistair Ashcroft but Moriarty was never as evil. DI Rowan Jackman and his team have come up against Ashcroft before and some of them barely escaped with their lives and even then they were left with emotional scars that would take years of therapy. Now, just when they thought they could put the past behind them Ashcroft is back seeking vengeance for past slights. At the same time they have been alerted that not everything about a production company shooting a tv show nearby is kosher and the person who alerted them to this has gone missing.
I love all of Joy Ellis' books especially those in this series but I have to admit to a frisson of excitement when I realised that once again the murderous sociopath Ashcroft had reared his head. There is always such a battle of wills between him and the quietly intelligent D.I Jackman. Add to this the whimsical pathologist Rory Wilkinson and uber-goth IT specialist Orla (Orac) Cracken and it is understandable that I have just finished this book at 4am.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Joffe Books and Joy Ellis for my ARC of 'The River's Edge' in return for an honest review.

i have read numerous books by this author and have loved them all. I was brought up in the fens so enjoy the descriptions and background.

In the quiet village of Salter-Le-fen a film crew arrive causing excitement. Then a body is found on the river’s edge of a young man who had been strangled. Two days later, another young man is discovered in a shallow lake with his throat cut. All of the bodies have been massaged in oil.

Detectives Jackman and Evans are trying to catch a killer before more bodies turn up.

Another brilliant read from Joy Ellis.

Highly recommended

I am always excited for the next Jackman and Evans book, especially with Richard Armitage as narrator! In this installment, Jackman is still mourning the loss of Laura while Marie is exploring life with her new love. Meanwhile, the bodies of gorgeous young men are being discovered and they’re somehow linked both to a local TV production as well as the perennial villain, Alastair Ashcroft. I followed this tale with increasing apprehension, hoping that this time would finally be the end for Ashcroft. You’ll have to find out what happens for yourself!

Cancel your plans and get ready to stay up all the night because Joy Ellis is back with an unputdownable new crime novel in her Jackman and Evans series and it’s spectacular: The River’s Edge.

There’s great excitement in the sleepy town of Saltern-Le-Fen. A film crew has just arrived to start shooting a new cop drama and there is a great buzz in town. But not everyone is happy about the film crew being there – namely Detective Jackman who receives a tip-off that something bad is about to happen. Detective Marie Evans, however, has other things on her mind as she is about to move into her new home. However, celebrations will prove thin on the ground when a body is found on the river’s edge of a young man who had been strangled and had his skin lathered in expensive oil. Two days later, another young man is discovered in a shallow lake with his throat cut and his body also massaged with oil.

Jackman and Evans have certainly got their hands full as they try to catch a killer before more bodies are found. But as if being on the trail of a serial-killer wasn’t bad enough, an enemy from their past is out to get them and is hatching a cruel and heinous plan for vengeance that will obliterate them. Can Jackman and Evans emerge from this investigation unscathed? Or will this be the last case they will ever work on?

The superb Joy Ellis gets it right every time and she has outdone herself yet again with The River’s Edge. A hair-raising rollercoaster ride packed with twists and turns, nail-biting tension and heart-stopping suspense, The River’s Edge is a first-rate thriller that kept glued to its pages as I found myself completely consumed by the latest Jackman and Evans investigation.

Addictive, gripping and far too good to miss, The River’s Edge is another must-read by Joy Ellis.

This book was OK. I have read another of the series, which I preferred and that did give me some insight into the detectives and their lives and histories. That was useful because this book does refer back to previous events.
There are different strands to the plot and the book is told from different perspectives. I did not really start getting into the book until past page 100. The characters are not really fleshed out, conversations seem a bit too formularic and clunky and it was sometimes difficult to follow as the scene changed continually within chapters... I found myself going over parts again to sort out where we were and who was talking to who.
Not all loose ends are tied up, some plot details are perhaps stretching the bounds of reality a little too far .
Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Not a bad book, but not great either.

I've loved this series ever since the beginning, and this book just keeps that streak alive. It wraps up a long-running storyline that I've been dying to see unfold, and it does so in spectacular fashion. I can't wait to hear Richard Armitage do the audio version!

Jackman and Evans 10 is a harrowing but well-research detective thriller with the team initially investigating a film company filming a police detective programme in local Saltern and surrounding fens. The camera men seem to have some extra-curricular activity of the dubious but lucrative filming nature going on as well. Then two beautiful young, unknown med are found murdered, bodies definitely lust worthy and well-oiled, literally. At the same time an old adversary, supposedly banged up and out of the way for life, returns to haunt them and their loved ones. How these all tie together is as good as the author gets, as usual. The settings are well described, the characters all work well together and I do like that Jackman and Evans can work together, be good friends too but with none of the 'will they, won't they' at all. A refreshing change. to many other series. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

There is a film crew working on the fens but something is wrong. A good looking on young man is found dead. Can Jackman and Evens find out what’s going on before anyone else dies. I read this in one go and now feel lost. Loved it.

The previous story and its devastating ending left the reader wondering what “Phase 2” would bring. More about that later.
This book opens with Marie receiving a call from an old colleague who believes he has stumbled upon some sort of major crime whilst acting as police advisor on the set of a tv crime drama. He thinks his life is in danger and passes his concerns onto Marie, only he has no idea what this crime might be! An old friend of Jackman’s, Frank Rosen, is due to take over the role when the film crew arrive in Saltern-Le-Fen for another new series, Fen Division Five, and the detectives waste no time in speaking to the former copper. After all he will be perfectly placed to sniff out any illegal goings-on and it’s not long before he finds a little thread to pull at. Just what horrors has this tv company brought to the Fens? Then dead bodies start to show up in the water, similar victims with no means of identification, a real puzzler for the murder investigation. Meanwhile old adversary Alistair Ashcroft isn’t going to let a little thing like a prison cell stop him from pursuing our favourite detectives. And so phase 2 begins, conducted on the outside by John and Janet’s replacement, Hazel. Mercenary John is in it for the generous payments from Stephen but Hazel idolizes him so what’s her story? And will Evans, Jackman and their very talented and likeable team of officers, be able to hunt down a killer when they themselves have also become the hunted?
DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans working at Saltern-le-Fen in the Fenland Constabulary police make a great partnership, each one lifting the other up through their respective bad times. At the moment it’s Jackman who is struggling after Laura’s death while Marie and new love Ralph Enderby are making plans for the future. The very close and loyal squad of DCs Robbie Melton, Charlie Button, Gary Pritchard, Max Cohen and Kevin Stoner are all present and correct, again aided in this story by two smashing uniformed officers, PCs Stacey Smith and Jay Acharya, together with old and very fond favourites Sam, Orac and Rory.
Just when I think this series can’t get any better, this marvellous author goes one step further!! Once again the evil shadow of Ashcroft looms large and an almighty showdown is coming whilst a very nasty set of people are at work. All the strands in this wonderful twisty complex plot come together in a brilliant and perfect ending. I can’t recommend both this book and the entire series enough!

Marie Evans gets a cryptic call from Dougie Evans ( ex-job) asking for a meet in secret.
It seems Dougie has been working as a police advisor to a film crew making a police drama, currently on set in the Saltern-le-Fen area. He has become suspicious that something very wrong is going on amidst the daily filming, in fact he is fearful for his life.
After updating Marie on the situation he goes into hiding.
Marie advises Detective Rowan Jackman of the situation and he has the perfect man to put in the crew undercover, enter Frank Rosen, now retired from the force and old friend of Jackman.
Before Frank even has time to report in the naked body of a of a very handsome young man is found at the rivers edge.He has been strangled and his body has been massaged in a very expensive oil.
When another body, again naked, lathered in the same body oil turns up in a shallow lake alarm bells start ringing.
Could they have a serial killer at work amongst them?
The more they investigate the more they suspect the hand of an old enemy is at work.
True he is secure in a prison . but Alistair "Stephen" Ashcroft has a long reach!
When the whole team start to receive threats and Frank Rosen disappears the hunt is on.
The question is who will win this battle..
AS expected this is cracking read and does not disappoint. If you have not read the series I`m sure the previous 9 books will now be on your TBR list after this one.

The River's Edge by Joy Ellis features her Detectives Rowan Jackman & Marie Evans and I have always liked the way she writes the dynamics between them, and I love the pathologist Rory Wilkinson as he always steals the show for me (he should have his own series of books) and its also good how he pops up in the other series of novels she writes, so there is always a littlebit of tie ins, The Rivers Edge was a bit of a slow burner and I wouldn't say it was my favourite but I still found it an enjoyable read.

Joy Ellis presents us with the most recent Jackman and Evans book. A film crew is currently on set in Saltern-le-Fen. But the police officer assigned as the liaison feels there is something very wrong going on. He becomes fearful for his life. He contacts his former colleague Marie Evans and tells his story. He then goes into hiding.

Detective Jackman knows just the man to insert in the film crew. A retired copper.

The story is told from several perspectives: the police investigating the crew, the evil mastermind who is now incarcerated and side by side is the murder of a young man who is found by the river’s edge. His body has been swabbed in oil. But this man won’t be the only victim to be found like this.

The man in prison has plans for Evans and Jackman. Plans for revenge.

The film crew is definitely up to no good.

The reader follows several plot lines, the drama ratchets up. Nobody can turn out consistently winning books like Ms. Ellis. Her protagonists are engaging and interesting. They live real lives, with tragedy and personal foibles. Her stories are original and almost mesmerizing.

I want to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this great book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.

An easy read as it grabs you straight away and you just have to keep reading. Ex- coppers afraid for their lives whilst on a film set, dodgy dealings behind the scenes, grieving detectives having lost their loved ones in the past and an evil criminal working in the background from prison. Are they all linked or just separate stories? I loved it!!

Thank you to Netgalley the author and the publishers for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review

This is a series that I only recently discovered but have managed to now play catch-up with. I have listened to the majority, only reading this and the previous book. Although, to be fair, I still read in Richard Armitage's voice. Isn't he a great narrator!
As per, I am going to suggest you start from the beginning with this series. All the main stories are self-contained, but the characters go through quite a lot and have developed nicely during the series so you would get the best out of each book if you read in order.
Right... housekeeping over... Marie is on the verge of moving into her dream home. For obvious reasons she has to keep her delight and joy in check at work which is easily managed as she is quite busy with the discovery of the body of a young man found at the river's edge. He is covered in rather expensive massage oil, which both intrigues and confuses.
Meanwhile everyone around the village of Saltern-le-Fen is all excited as a new TV police drama is being filmed there. I say everyone, not Jackman as he has just had a rather concerning tip-off...
And if that wasn't enough, there's a blast from the past rearing their ugly head up once again to act a puppet master in a revenge plan involving those who put him in prison.
I love this series. I have no idea why it took me so long to find it. But I am so very glad I did as it ticks every box for me. Sometimes it's hard to listen to books and stay concentrated, but I have to say that each book in this series has held on to my attention nicely all the way through. So yes, it was a little strange actually reading it for once. But in a really good way.
The story is extremely well plotted, which is good as it is rather convoluted at times, but it all comes good at the end, after some rather cracking twists and turns along the way. And the ending, which I am saying nothing more about, is genius.
What really makes this series, obviously, is the two main characters and their relationships within and outwith of work. Both together and separately. They are kind of chalk and cheese if you really break it all down but the rub along so well.
All in all, another cracker, and one I will be revisiting once the Audible is out. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Dougie Marshall wants to talk with Marie Evens. When she meets him he looks awful. He is working as a police advisor for a film company, and after two weeks working, he thinks there is a serious crime going on. He has been warned by accidents and threatening calls late at night. The same company has now come to Saltern-le-Fen, and he has left. They have hired a new consultant, Frank Rosen, an old mate of Jackman.

Soon, the police find a gorgeous naked man by a lake and then another one the next day. Meanwhile, Jackman and Evans realize that Alistair Ashcroft is involved in the current case. He was previously arrested for murder and incarcerated for life. He had a serious psychological problem, and was a brutal murderer - a very difficult previous case for Jackman and Evans. He was now in a special prison unit which is far more comfortable than the usual jail. The reader soon realizes that Ashcroft is also managing a lot of crime while still in jail. Besides secret porn films, he has ordered more killings and arranged some snuff films as well.

There is a lot of suspense and excitement, as members of the police receive threats to themselves and their loved ones, and the dead bodies appear, but finally, everything comes together.

I thank Joffe Books and Netgalley for the ARC. The opinions are my own.
