The Disturbance is an eerie, atmospheric novel that blurs the lines between reality and imagination. It follows Ava as she grapples with mysterious occurrences in her home and her own unraveling sense of self. The writing is haunting and quietly intense, pulling you into Ava’s world of creeping dread. If you’re into psychological tales with a touch of the surreal, this one will leave you thinking long after you finish!

This was a really compelling and in places, tough to read story. I thought the author did a really good job with the topic of domestic violence and the way in which it pervades every aspect of the victim's life. I also thought the witchy elements of the story were well handled, giving a grown-up 'The Craft' vibe, which I appreciated. I did find the ending a little bit of a damp squib, but overall, I enjoyed this book a lot.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This one sounded like everything I like (unreliable narrator! Horror! A suspicious boyfriend!) but ultimately was not for me. It was a bit slow and the narrator never quite connected for me with the story. I would be open to reading another book by this author because she has talent, but the slow burn of this combined with the narrator did not provide enough payoff for me.

I really struggled to get into the book. It is a slow burn with characters that I didn't connect with.
I typically like an edge of your seat with non stop action type of thriller with dark and messed up people. This one was a little more "cozy". This is definitely a preference thing for me, so I think this book would be great for those who like a more laid back thriller.

I really liked the concept of this book but it fell so flat for me. The unreliable MC with trauma from her abusive ex boyfriend plus the witch vibes sounded great. Unfortunately not a lot happened in this book. I’m still not totally sure why she was so obsessed with her teenage neighbor and the friend. The ending was so boring as well.
The narration was done well though and I didn’t feel like I had a difficult time staying attentive.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.

DISTURBANCE lives up to its name by providing a deeply unsettling exploration of the true horrors inflicted upon individuals who have undergone systematic physical and emotional abuse. The author skillfully delves into the profound impact that such trauma has on one's psyche, vividly depicting how it shatters their very being.
The narrative astutely employs the recurring phrase "my boyfriend" as a poignant reminder of the protagonist's past, highlighting her transformation from a once happy and amiable person to someone forever altered by her harrowing experiences. This serves to underscore that the lasting tragedy lies not only in the tangible wounds inflicted but also in the enduring scars etched within her soul.
Through her encounters with her neighbor's partner, she confronts echoes of what she has recently escaped, ultimately aiding in reclaiming herself and rediscovering her voice. In the end, I wasn't sure what the magic element in this novel truly was, but left feeling unsettled in the best of ways. Immaculate.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the free audio book in exchange for my honest review. This is narrated by Carin Walker-Booth, who does a fantastic job of pulling you into the story!
A young woman has recently broken up with her boyfriend and now lives alone in an apartment. She is fixated on a teenage neighbor who similarly, has broken up with her boyfriend. The teenager and a friend appear to be performing spells on the ex-boyfriend and the narrator becomes intrigued. Could she as well perform the spells to banish her ex?
Its clear that the narrator is recovering from domestic abuse and in a Rear Window fashion, is seeing her own trauma reflected in her neighbor. While the premise is really good, the delivery just falls flat for me. The narrator is dealing with a lot on her own, unreliable and depressed. So staying in her head with reading her POV, just did not work for me. I did not like the characters and just did not feel invested in the story.

I had a lot of trouble getting into this book. I have seen many positive reviews for this book and I suspect it was the audiobook format that was not the right fit for me. I plan to seek out the physical book and give it another try to see if I can connect with this book in a different format.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was a bit lost in this book 1st started
I usually try not to read the plot or get too much information before I jump into a book but this one I think I should’ve
I got the sense that the main character was a teenager but she was actually in her 20s
I related to this because I would say in my 20s I also started realizing a lot of things
I am a very jealous that she was able to find teenagers who could give her life advice and relate to her
The book doesn’t really get to in depth about how this is considered abuse it makes it normalized
It’s in a way that if you didn’t know you were being abused this way you still wouldn’t from the way it’s described
It just feels like she’s more unhappy and not excepting she needs to move on

I found this book surprising. It wasn't what I expected not so much horror but more horrific what the 26 year old women went through. Once she herself gets settled and organised she feels compelled/drawn to her neighbours as she notices there is alot of odd things going on there.
This is the first of Jenna Calke books I've read/heard (audiobook(
It's a disturbing but engaging novel.
The narrator for the audio was brilliant.
Thank you to Netgalley and Dreamscape for the audiobook in return for an honest review.

Wow. Wasn’t sure where this was going, never really read this type of book. But sucked me in and it was an amazing book! I’m happy I was given the chance to read something I normally would not have chosen. Thank you for the opportunity! This book is surely to be a hit!
Don’t forget any to give any spoilers, spying can lead to a path not wanted. Well done Jenna Clake.

I was so excited when I read the synopsis of Disturbance! When I received the ARC as an audiobook I dove right in. The narrator was fantastic and really complimented the storytelling. This was my first novel by Jenna Clake and it definitely won't be my last. Disturbance was everything I hoped it would be and more. It was emotionally raw yet delightfully witchy.

wow. im so incredibly dissapointed by this book. it was incredibly boring where nothing happened. the main character fell so completely flat. i get was Clarke was trying to do with her backstory, but it went nowhere.

In theory, this book sounded right up my alley, but I could not wrap my head around it. Perhaps it was the audio format, but I did not enjoy my time spent with this piece.

This book was a whole lot of nothing in my opinion. A woman that stalks her witchy neighbors from her flat while also reliving her past with her ex boyfriend she keeps running from. The characters weren’t my favorite and the book was short but the plot could have had a lot more potential.

This was a huge surprise for me. I loved how real it felt. I would not classify this as horror, and I think I have a bit of a loose definition of horror, so I’m not sure that that’s the best marketing of this. The narrator experiences projection of her own toxic relationship to the point where she is entirely unsure of how to perceive other’s relationships. A very real symptom of CPTSD that can majorly complicate all relationships moving forward because of the victim’s responses to perceived triggers. Thank you to NetGalley & W.W. Norton for the ARC.

I really wanted to enjoy this book, in the end it just fell flat for me. The story is about a 20 something befriending high school girls who dabble in magic. With a tormented past she spends much of the book trying to find ways to run and heal. It was a quick book to get through, but nothing that really stood out. I also didn’t understand why the main character was never named. I think that is part of why I was never able to fully immerse into the book.

Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for this audiobook ARC for my honest review! The initial description of the book does nothing for it as it heavily implies witchcraft is a major focus for the book. Which feels misleading. It’s really not. That subject is barely there and is used more as a way the narrator can make an initial connection to her neighbor Chelsea. The description in my opinion hurts the story more by giving the readers a false sense of what the story is about. Though it heavily implies witchcraft and a violent presence because of it, it’s roots are about the narrator’s abuse and how she comes to terms with it. I enjoyed the story nevertheless but since I was promised witchcraft which is what initially drew me in, I wish there just more to it. It felt super lackluster. The story all in all was not at all what I thought it would be. I thought there’d be more supernatural aspects to it but it’s based more upon actual reality. The ending felt kind of anticlimactic for me. It’s best not to go into this story expecting any supernatural or supernatural horror. I received this arc as an audiobook and thought the narrator did a wonderful job. Overall a decent read, just don’t go into it expecting a heavy supernatural theme as the description suggests.

Disturbance felt like I was following the fmc through a fever dream. She is struggling to move on and heal from an abusive ex and is hearing noises in her apartment that are leading her to believe there may be an entity residing in her home. She spies on the other residents of her apartment complex and soon becomes involved in Witchcraft and is casting spells with her teenage neighbors.
If this sounds like a good time, read Disturbance. It's a nice, quick read.
Thank you for the audio ARC!

I wouldn't classify this story as "horror". It deals with abuse and some witch like magic. For me the book was too somber. I also have a pet peeve about not knowing the main characters name. It drives me crazy.
