Our favorite fictional true crime podcaster Rachel Krall is back — and this time she’s out of the courtroom and helping the FBI solve a disappearance.
The follow-up to The Night Swim, this story follows Rachel who is called to an FBI investigation in Florida where Terence Bailey, a man suspected in the murders and disappearances of multiple women but never charged, is about to be released. One of his last (and few) visitors is social media influencer Maddison Logan, but when she goes missing shortly after the visit, Rachel comes in to help, going undercover at an influencers convention (that can’t really be a thing, right??) to dig up info. As she gets closer to the truth, she learns the danger and true monster may be hidden in plain site.
While I preferred its predecessor’s constant mystery (ie never knowing who is really at fault until the end), this reveals pretty quickly who the bad guy is — but the mystery remains as to his connection and where the story will actually go. But unlike the predecessor, I much preferred this break from the courtroom. Great for fans of mysteries and thrillers.
As for the narrators, January LaVoy and Samantha Desz return, bringing back that same great dynamic from The Night Swim story narration and podcast recordings, while also now joined by André Santana.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. This comes out 8/8.

Excellent narration makes this book impossible to stop listening to. The second installment in the Rachel Krall series is even better than the first. A man that is about to be released from prison has the FBI working double time to keep him incarcerated. Even though Terrance Bailey was only jailed for breaking and entering, he is suspected of much worse. With the murders and disappearances of several young women staying unsolved, the police believe Bailey is to blame even though they have continued during his incarceration. Enter Rachel Krall, who goes undercover in the world of influencers, since they seem to be the ones being targeted. Excellent, impossible to put down thriller!

Not only is this story suspenseful and intensely written but I’m giving it 5 stars for the audiobook performance alone!

A missing influencer. A criminal and suspected serial killer just days away from prison release. An FBI investigation that leads to famous podcaster Rachel Krall. Suddenly, she becomes a target in this dangerous game with a murderer.

True crime podcaster Rachel returns to help find a missing influencer and as expected, I found Dark Corners to be just as entertaining as Night Swim, if not more (especially on audio.) This was so twisty, compelling and addicting! It’s the way crime fiction should be written. I was hooked on the suspense and intrigue; it held my attention from beginning to end.

I really enjoyed the social media influencer angle, even if those characters were mostly unlikeable. The live podcast segments were such a stunning addition to the present day plot. I was NOT expecting the reveal or ending and that always makes or breaks a story for me. I will always love reading the perspective from a serial killer and it was done SO WELL here. Fun fact: I learned of a medical condition I’ve never heard of, which was a nice bonus for a nerd like me.

The Florida backdrop makes this a perfect summer thriller. I cannot stress enough how much I recommend this book on AUDIO! 👏🏽 The narration and sound effects were chef’s kiss. I wish we could’ve gotten more of the romance worked in but maybe there’ll be more on that in future?! 🤞🏽

* This can be read as a standalone; you don’t need to read The Night Swim first.

I really hope we get more books from this Rachel Krall series!

He's almost out and she's gone missing...
Terence Bailey's sentence for breaking and entering is almost up. The police suspect him of murdering six women, but can they prove it? As his release day approaches, Madison Logan, a beautiful, young influencer with a huge following on social media, visits him unexpectedly, hours before she goes missing. Upon investigating her disappearance, the police find that Madison has no family, no friends, and noone seems to see her outside of her social media posts. Is she really who she says she is? After hitting a wall in their investigation, the FBI reluctantly reaches out for Rachel Krall's help. As Rachel goes undercover at an influencer convention, the police discover the body of a woman with a very distinct tattoo. Could Bailey have an accomplice helping him on the outside? Can Rachel help the FBI piece this puzzle together before someone else, or herself, turns up dead next?
After reading The Night Swim, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next Rachel Krall story. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I was a little bummed to see a change for the worse in Rachel's personality and wasn't a big fan on the influencer storyline. It started off a little slow, but grew on me as it progressed, even though there was a lot going on at once. I really was really bummed to find out that Bailey Carr wasn't brought back for this audiobook, however, the narrators, Andre Santana, January LaVoy, and Samantha Desz made it fun to listen to! They portrayed the emotions of their characters beautifully. I also loved that the podcast episodes, with intro music and all, continued along with the phone calls and recordings that had a different quality of sound to them, making it more realistic and really added to the listening experience. I really hope this isn't the end of Rachel Krall!
I received a free copy of this book via Libro.fm, NetGalley, and Edelweiss+. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

As a lover of the night swim, I was so excited to get back into the true crime world with the second book in this series!

Although I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the night swim, it was still entertaining, even if parts of it were pretty far fetched. I’m pretty sure the FBI would not be calling a podcaster up to help with their investigation.

I wished there were more of the podcast sections in this one, but it was still twisty and kept me guessing! I didn’t guess how it all connected so I enjoyed seeing that play out!

Thank you NetGalley and St Martins press for an advanced copy of this audiobook

The second installment in the Rachel Krall series, Dark Corners brings the story of the disappearance of social media Influencer Maddison Logan after meeting with convicted serial killer, Terence Bailey, at the correctional facility where he is being held.

When the FBI hit a wall in their investigation they turn to Rachel for help (seriously, so unrealistic but I’ll ignore that). Rachel goes undercover at a convention for influencers where we get a glimpse of the influencer scene as Goldin sees it. I have been seeing a lot of influencers popping up in recent books and they are always written the same - shallow, vapid and so unlikeable. Talk about a stereotype. This was frustrating to see as it’s just an excuse for poorly written characters with little development. Thankfully the book had some areas to redeem itself.

Unlike the first book in the series, this one moves at a much faster pace and does not tell the story through courtroom dialogue. While it take a little to build the story and draw you in, you will get drawn in and not want to put the book down (except maybe to throw it during the Buzzcon scenes) until you’ve solved the case. Despite what I said above with how I really disliked how the Influencer conference was portrayed (no I promise I am not one I just think it is overused) the plot and story really did suck me in and I truly did enjoy this book - it was a much faster paced and more exciting read than the first in the series and I hope we see more of Rachel Krall

3.5 stars rounded up
Reading this was like watching a good episode of Criminal Minds.
It was an addictive and hard to put down, fast-paced read. I enjoyed the way information was revealed. And I really like Rachel Krall as a main character, she's badass, smart, and always strives to do the right thing. This book has the same podcast elements that made Night Swim such a joy to listen to on audio, though you don't have to read the first book to enjoy this one. Don't be afraid to jump right in! You won't feel lost (though I loved [book:The Night Swim|51169341] so I recommend reading it too anyways UNLESS you are triggered by SA since that book heavily deals with that content).
Some negatives: The take on influencers felt dated and overdone to me. They don't feel like real people (although it could just be that I don't follow influencers like this, and maybe they are out there, idk). And the romance felt weak and forced. I didn't hate it, but it kind of came out of nowhere and I didn't feel any buildup until it happened. After that things progressed very quickly, and while no grand declarations were made it still felt a little too fast for my liking.
But otherwise, the mystery was entertaining and I enjoyed the twists and turns the story took. I found this book to be less predictable than the first in the series. I also appreciated that this book brought up both missing white girl syndrome as well as the way we often focus on the killer instead of the victims in true crime. They are both important topics in the true crime genre and ones I think we need to be more cognizant of.
Overall, while this was not *as* enjoyable for me as Night Swim, I still had a good time with it and I will definitely be picking up the next Rachel Krall book (as well as Megan Goldin's other works!).
Huge thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the early review audiobook copy :)

I have been so fortunate with the amazing books that I have read lately!

This is the second book in the Rachel Krall series. Krall is a true crime podcaster and she’s back to help the FBI search for an influencer who goes missing after visiting a suspected serial killer.

I loved the fact that the story takes place at a social media influencer conference. The twists and connections were very well done. The story alternates between the story and episodes of Krall’s podcast. I listened to it and felt the podcast was done PERFECTLY. When the music that introduced the podcast would start, I got so excited because the podcast felt so real!! I thoroughly enjoyed this and didn’t want it to end!

Let me start by saying I WILL NEVER IN MY LIFE USE UBER OR LIFT especially after this lol (I never have yet and unless it’s my LAST resort I will never!)

The is book 2 in the Rachel Krall stories by Megan Goldin (more like a semi sequel it follows the same character.) I love THE NIGHT SWIM and was excited for Rachel’s story to continue, but this newest one just fell flat for me.

What worked:
I enjoyed the twist.
MC.
The influencer plot.
I love pairing my books with the audio and crazy enough I was approved for the @netgalley audio book before BOTM announced their July picks and when I saw this was an option it was perfect and meant to be!
What I really enjoyed with the audio book especially was the pod cast portions! But even that was a bummer because they were barely focus on in this book.

What didn’t:
Too much was going on. The pacing of it all made it hard to follow. The beginning had a great start but then you wait forrrrrrever for the twist which is tough for a thriller. I also felt like it wasn’t really explained WHY the villain did what they did and I don’t like things like that left out. The romance felt randomly added. And there was a lot of repeat lines that made think “didn’t I just read that line a few sentence ago?” Almost as if the author forgot they previously used that line and almost word for word copy and pasted it a few sentence later. It got very annoying.

Despite how this review sounds I will definitely still continue this if the author continues Rachel’s story! Rachel is a fun relatable character and I’m a sucker for a good podcast tie in!

(I do recommend reading THE NIGHT SWIM first but you definitely don’t have to for DARK CORNERS to make sense)

Thank you @netgalley for my arc of the audio book for this! The performance and immersive-ness was perfection!

I absolutely loved The Night Swim, so I couldn't wait to get more of Rachel Krall and her podcast. I had high expectations for this book that....weren't *quite* met.

I still enjoyed it, don't get me wrong. It just didn't have quite the same draw as Night Swim did, and Rachel wasn't quite as enjoyable this time around. Her decisions seemed a little off in a few cases.

However, I liked the little bit of romance, I liked knowing part of the plot and trying to figure out how it all connected, and I liked the twist at the end. It was a good one and I did not guess it at all.

Joe was a fun addition as well. I don't fully get why he made some of the choices he did, but he was fun to read about.

Didn't love the whole influencer focus because I'm just not that interested in them, but I did like the depiction of the toxicity and self importance of them all.

Overall, a bit of a letdown after Night Swim, but still a quick and entertaining read. Plus these books were made for audio, I'm glad I consumed this one in that manner.

I really enjoyed this one! I thought including the perspective of the killer was very unique! I enjoyed the fact that this book felt like a stand-alone even though it is in a series. I will definitely be looking out for a third book in the series!

First of all, I have to say that the format of these books - with the podcast sections going throughout and then the sections where Rachel is doing her investigations and then parts where you get to see firsthand what is happening makes the pacing for these books great. I love the way that information is doled out and it keeps my interest throughout.
I listened to the audio of these books and the narrator does a great job and the podcast format lends itself great to the way these books are written.
In this installment of Rachel Krall, our intrepid podcaster finds herself within the mystery she’s investigating. I liked the addition of the FBI investigator and I hope he stays around in later books. This story takes us into the world of online influencers and some unsavory aspects of law enforcement. I found the overall story engaging though I did like the first book in the series a bit better.

Megan Goldin is becoming one of my favorite authors! I requested an advanced copy of Dark Corners knowing nothing more about it than the fact it was written by Goldin. Since I went into reading it blind - I was so surprised to find that podcaster Rachel Krall from The Night Swim is back. I was reading and kept thinking - something seems so familiar to me about this girl. I loved The Night Swim - it has been a while since I read it so I really didn't remember much other than Rachel and a courtroom setting. This time Rachel is assisting an FBI agent in a case. So you could absolutely read Dark Corners if you haven't read The Night Swim. But I encourage you to read BOTH - because they are both so good! This book caught my attention right away and kept me engaged throughout - it got really good toward the end. I do seem to enjoy books that have a podcast element to them. This one also gave a glimpse into the world of influencers as well. The audiobook is narrated by one of my favorite narrators January Lavoy - as well as Samantha Desz who also narrated in The night swim. There is a third narrator in this book - André Santana. The three together did an amazing job. I also loved in the audiobook the parts where it goes to the podcast - the sound elements for those parts are just an added touch I loved making you think your listening to a podcast. Thank you so much Macmillan audio for my advanced copy of this amazing audiobook! Audiobooks are fast becoming my favorite way of reading and you just always seem to have such good ones!

Thank you to NetGalley for the advance audiobook.
I was looking forward to this book because I really enjoyed the Night Swim. I must say I was a little bored with this one. Overall, this book was just average.. As for the audio it was great.

I really enjoyed this book and thought it was different from previous mystery books I've read. It didn't include the gore that many mystery books do which I appreciate as I have a hard time reading those. I didn't read the first book but everything made sense. The only thing I didn't love was there were a lot of names mentioned and it was hard to keep track of everyone. Otherwise it was fast paced and different from any mysteries I've read so far!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this thriller! I have previously listened to her first Rachel Krall book and it was fun to see what was next for this character in this one. Although it does make a few references to the first book, book 1 and 2 can definitely stand alone. This book is fast-paced and took no time at all to be sucked into it. Definitely one to read! Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the arc!

Rachel Krall is back again! Dark Corners is a crime fiction thriller set in Florida. The audiobook is interestingly formatted - multiple narrators, background music, etc. Those extra features made it a bit more realistic. The pace felt pretty slow until the last hour. That being said, the story was intriguing and it was hard to put down. I liked the additional drama that came with the influencers. Nice twists and turns. I recommend!

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing an advanced reader copy of the book for an honest review. Any quote(s) used in my review have been uncorrected.

Rachel Krall is back in another crime novel. This time there are lots of social media influencers and an inmate about to be released from prison. The FBI calls Rachel when the inmate’s last visitor, a #vanlife influencer, goes missing. Rachel’s name came up during their conversation, so the FBI offers Rachel exclusive access to the case if she talks to the inmate. Of course, Rachel becomes involved in the case as more than just a reporter, she may turn into a victim. Readers get insight into many characters through third person perspective changes. Rachel is the main perspective, but readers also see an FBI agent and a shady ride-share driver. The cast of narrators is great; one narrator reads most of the story and the other two read for the special report podcast episodes. The special reports also have music and sound effects that differentiate them from the rest of the book. The story is very convoluted, but all of the pieces do tie together at the end. This can also be read as a standalone novel; readers do not need to read the first Rachel Krall book to understand this one. Ultimately, mystery readers should try this one, and the audio is a great choice for experiencing this book.

I really enjoyed The Night Swim and went into this with pretty high expectations.
This was not what I hoped for.
The plot was not nearly as enticing and the characters were kind of detestable.
It just didn't have the same pull as the first book.
Also who the Fudge dyes their hair in a camp ground? Seriously WTF?!
Not only is it absolutely ridiculous, but abhorrent behaviour.
If you are going into this, I would suggest the audio, it was a lot smoother for the podcast transitions.
Thanks to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio & St. Martin's Press for my DRCs.

Wow, wow, wow! Dark Corners was the perfect sequel to The Night Swim. I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and let me tell you, it didn't disappoint. The narrators did a fantastic job in the story-telling. I couldn't stop listening! Perfection is exactly what we've come to expect from Megan Goldin and we got it. 5 huge stars!
