Initially, I was unimpressed. It felt like there was too much going on, a lot of characters being introduced… but hear me out… all of it is relevant! Once things start to get revealed I was shocked! Shocked in a good way. Everything clicks together eventually.

This has the same sort of flow as book 1 of the series. The podcast format is excellent. Definitely recommend to anyone who loved the first book.

The audiobook narrator is great. I loved the range of emotions I could feel through the audio reading. I usually hate multiple POV but here it was written and read very well. Easy to follow.

I really enjoyed this book. This is the second book of a series, however this book can be read without reading the first.

Rachel Krall returns as a true crime podcaster, this time she heads to Florida to meet with an inmate, Terrence Bailey. Terrence is about to be released from prison when an influencer, Madison Logan goes missing. Madison had visited with Terrence not long before she went missing. Is he connected to her disappearance.

I listened to the audio of this book and enjoyed the narrators. I thought they really helped with the story and recommend listening if you like audio books!

This book has suspense, twists and turns and different storylines going on the somehow wove together nicely. I recommend this book if you like a good suspense read!

Dark Corners by Megan Goldin is the sequel to 2020's The Night Swim, featuring Rachel Krall as the series protagonist. Rachel is a crime podcaster with a history of getting convicted felons retried in court, and being set free thanks to her in depth journalism. In Dark Corners, Rachel is investigating the disappearance of a social media influencer who went missing shortly after visiting an inmate who is soon to be released from prison. This inmate is suspected in the disappearances of six women but no evidence was found to charge him of the crimes. With very little evidence to go on, and more people disappearing in the Daytona area who have connections to Maddison, the social media influencer, the CIA and Rachel are quickly running out of time.

Megan Goldin is a great writer who knows how to pace her stories well and intersperse her chapters with dialogue from the supposed podcast Rachel hosts. I enjoyed this novel quite a bit, but the social media aspect of the story didn't gel with me quite like The Night Swim's overall story did. Much of this storyline has Rachel hanging out with social media influencers at a convention, and it is filled to the brim with the most narcissistic of individuals, and while Rachel is just about as disgusted by their behavior as I was, it didn't make the reading experience any easier. Add to that, a few red herrings that went on a little too long and didn't get wrapped up until the epilogue and you have a sequel that doesn't quite live up to its predecessor, but this is only a matter of opinion as I have a particular distaste for social media influencers.

As always, the audio version of this is the best way to experience this novel. The narrator does a fantastic job with reading and has a lovely, almost smokey quality to her voice. The editing is superb as it adds music between chapters and a "phone quality" sound when Rachel is talking to someone over the phone. These phone conversations suddenly dip in volume though, so that is the one negative to the audiobook as I missed out on some dialogue at times during these scenes.

Overall, the tone is quite dark and the eventual perpetrator is caught, but they are a little bit of a cliche in terms of personality. Some might argue they have reasons for why they do what they did, but more nuance into their character and motivations would have been nice. I won't remark further on the characters as I don't want to spoil the ending. A solid novel, and I look forward to the next one in the series!

Like most books by Megan Goldin this books draws you in from the start. I was sucked in by the unique plot and story line. I really enjoyed the subject and insanity of what it would be like to be an influencer. What an insight to that madness! This book takes you for a spin into the dark corners of your thinking to help you wonder how it will shake out! I enjoyed every minute of this book. It dabbled in suspense, thriller and a touch of romance too. I really enjoyed this book!

I read Dark Corners immediately following The Night Swim. I loved how this book picked up right where The Night Swim left off. I do however think that this could be read as a standalone.
.
Rachel Krall has a popular podcast where she brings light to cases, both old and new, and puts the listener in the juror box.
.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I was never quite sure who was the guilty one.
.
🤳2nd in the series
🤳suspenseful
🤳a dash of romance

I think the audiobook is a great way to go with this book. Fantastic narrator and I loved the podcast chapters. I can’t wait for the series to continue and to see what Rachel Krall gets up to next!

Thank you netgalley and Macmillan audio for the opportunity to read this book!

Megan Goldin did not come to play when she wrote Dark Corners. This book had me on the edge on my seat the whole damn time. I didn't want the book to end but the ending was chef's kiss.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC. This was such a fun audiobook. Part book/part podcast. I feel like it was a little predictable but it still made me keep reading and wanting more.

I did not know that was second in a series surrounding Rachel Krall. However, that did not impact my ability to remain engaged! This was so great! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The way the characters and POVs intersected was flawless. The narration was excellent as well. I especially enjoyed how they
included Rachel’s podcast and made it an “authentic podcast experience”

Thank you, St. Martin’s Press, for the advanced reader copy of Dark Corners! I enjoyed this new book in the Rachel Krall series! I was very excited to read it since I loved The Night Swim.

This arc is an audiobook and I will always recommend listening to the Rachel Krall series instead of just reading it.The chapters that are snippets from Rachel’s podcast sound like they are actual podcast recordings and these are always my favorite parts of the book.

I was drawn in right from the jump- I thought the opening was a cool/suspenseful way to start the story. I really like Rachel’s character- she’s strong and doesn’t take anyone’s shit. I also liked the new love interest for Rachel- no spoilers though.

Though I loved Rachel’s character, I personally felt like there were way too many characters in this story. There were times when I was confused about the past/present storylines. I also didn’t really enjoy the whole influencer storyline; I get why it worked with the plot, but to me it wasn’t necessary and just distracted from the actual mystery.

That being said, I’m still a fan and would recommend the audiobook. I look forward to reading the next book in the Rachel Krall series!

Really good, loved the book, needed to hear the audiobook. Great tie ins from the first book. Hooked me from the beginning. Can't wait to read about what rachel krall does next. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC

I love a good police procedural/mystery and I am a fan of Megan Goldin's books - but this one didn't grab me like I had hoped. I didn't connect much with the characters and found myself uninterested.

Good thing I’m always nice to my Uber drivers!

I loved it! I did read the first book (Night Swim) but I don’t think you need to in order to understand and keep up with the story BUT our popular podcaster, Rachel is back!

The influencer life is a subplot and it is intertwined really well, it doesn’t take away from the twists and main plot!

I was engrossed with the audio from start to finish and loved the podcast interviews with Rachel — the narration was STUNNING!

Thank you @macmillan.audio for my advanced #audiobook 🎧 #macmillanaudio

What a roller coaster of a ride this story was! Love a good mystery/thriller and the author once again does not disappoint! Character development was spot on. Felt they were all so real.
Highly recommend!
Narrator did a fab job with telling the story!

Dark Corners was my first read of my vacation week, and I’m not sure how my next read can possibly measure up. Megan Goldin brings back podcaster Rachel Krall from book one in her series, and I’m already hoping she returns in a book three. In Dark Corners, Rachel is recruited by Joe Martinez to help solve the disappearance of a missing influencer, and it’s non-stop twists and reveals that left me frantically flipping wondering how things would tie together. When Megan even tied in the influencer swag, it wrapped it all together in a way that is just oh so entertaining, and I’m left hoping that Joe and Rachel join forces again.

Dark Corners is the second in the Rachel Krall series. Rachel is a podcaster who focuses on true crime. I really enjoyed the first book, The Night Swim. But this one was much less believable and therefore, less enjoyable.
The book is all about people making bad decisions. The book starts with an unbelievable premise - that the FBI would knowingly risk the life of a civilian. Oh, this suspected serial killer is in prison, so she’s safe. The fact that he’s getting out in two days doesn’t raise a concern? Really? And they even whisk her away from home without giving her time to think things through. And then, after a few hours, then they’re all concerned about her safety and want her to go back home? Flip side, Rachel took a lot of risks that made me cringe. Goldin was trying to portray her as independent, but she came across as bullheaded.
Terence Bailey has been in prison for six years without a visitor. Earlier in the week, Maddison Logan, a “hot young influencer”, had come to visit him. Right after, she goes missing. So the FBI has the bright idea to have Rachel visit Bailey to see if she can learn anything. It’s not giving anything away that the blurb doesn’t already say to indicate there’s a potential accomplice.
The story is told from the perspective of Rachel and Tom, an Uber driver with an unfortunate health problem. I’m not a fan of being privy to the culprit’s thoughts and actions. I much prefer a straight investigation.
I loved the scenes that dealt with influencers. I don’t follow any and having read this book, doubt I ever will. What a group of egos!
If you’re willing to suspend belief and just want some entertainment, you’ll probably enjoy this book. My Type A personality struggled with it. Another reviewer (thank you Girlwiththepinkskimask) mentioned the poor writing/editing here and she was spot on. There are numerous contradictions and repetitive clauses. It made for a very awkward read.
Despite being the second of the series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone.
I listened to this and kudos to Macmillan Audio for truly making this an audio experience. The podcast definitely sounded like a podcast. January LaVoy is the primary narrator and does her normally good job.
My thanks to St. Martin’s Press and Macmillan Audio for an advance copy of this book.

Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC audiobook of this novel. I was fluctuating between 3 and 4 stars. I liked a lot of things about it and overall found the story itself as well as the format really appealing. Great job

A delicious blend of dark academia, isolated reunion and forced friendships! Trust no one! I thoroughly enjoyed the return to detective rachel.

After quickly devouring The Night Swim, getting to Dark Corners was an immediate thought.

Who can you trust the most? What makes you trust a stranger? Trust seemed to be the underlying topic of this book.

This tale is the story about a social media influencer gone missing. In today’s world, there is so much content being published, it’s hard to know who is real and what being posted is true. Also, how much of yourself do you really want exposed for the world to see? There are definite pros to keeping personal things under wraps, but what if your lack of trust put you in danger?

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook for the narrators and tone they portray. You get different narrators and little podcast clips that it just feels like your normal everyday listening to stories. With the emotions being evident in the narration, it brought it to life in a different way than just my reading might have done.

There was a lot going on, but the way in which the stories are woven together really keeps you pausing whatever you’re doing to hear more/read more. I found myself saying just one more chapter late into the night many times.

Thank you so much to the author, Megan Goldin, Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the audio eARC of Dark Corners in exchange for my review!

Megan Goldin is now an instant buy! As soon as I got the ARC of Dark Corners I listened to The Night Swim and moved directly into Dark Corners—followed by everything else! Megan writes compelling stories that kept me listening way past my bedtime!

Dark Corners addition of influencers and the ‘politics’ of social media was fascinating. The podcast trope is one of my favorites but typically one I find in YA—Megan Goldin doing this in the general adult lane is fantastic.

January LaVoy is one of my favorite narrators so I was set to like this from the beginning. Samantha Desz and Andre Santana are new to me narrators but I enjoyed both.

Fingers crossed that there is more to come in the Rachel Krall series!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the audio book in exchange for an honest review!
I loved this book! The author kept me guessing throughout the story and there was at least one twist that I did not see coming. I learned so much about influencers and I just love learning random information while reading fiction. I enjoyed the narrator and how there were sound effects and stuff when there were chapters on Rachel's podcast episodes. This was my first book by Megan Goldin and. I now have to go read more. Absolutely recommend this twisty thriller!
