I thought that this book was a very authentic view of the author’s struggle with her son’s substance abuse and how it so deeply affected her life and the lives of others close to them. She was open and honest about how she felt about her son’s alcoholism. Additionally, she provided education throughout the book in terms of terminology used by drug addicts, resources, rehab options, etc. She talked about police reform and the response to addicts and substance users. She talked about how the mentally ill and substance users are now often jailed as opposed to being in treatment.

I can relate so much to this book. I was engaged to a man 30 years ago with a serious alcohol problem. I can relate to the author’s anxieties, depression, and wanting to take control of the situation. I learned that the disease will drive you crazy and that in some sense, you have to let go for the sake of your sanity.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with a loved one with substance abuse disorder.
