I received a free copy of, Death at a Scottish Wedding, by Lucy Connelly, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book 2 of 2 in the Scottish Isles Mystery series. I have always been fascinated with Scotland, when I saw this title I was drawn to this book. American Dr, Emilia Mcroy has been living in Sea Isle, Scotland, but it still does not feel like home yet. When Emilia is invited to a wedding at a castle, she is excited, but then she finds a dead body, and the weather is not helping. Can Emilia solve the mystery? I really enjoyed Emilia, the castle, Scotland and the story.

Death at a Scottish Wedding is he second book in the Scottish Isle Mystery series. I enjoyed the first book, An American in Scotland, too. The story takes place on Sea Isle, Scotland. There are the main characters from the first book as well as the new characters that add to the story. Emilia McRoy is the town doctor and coroner. She has come to Scotland from America. Ewan Campbell is the laird, mayor and constable of Sea Isle. Her friend, Angie who owns the family tartan company, is the bride who plans to marry Damien at Morrigan Castle the family home of Ewan Campbell. People are planning to arrive early as there is a snow storm predicted. The wedding is for the whole weekend. Emilia, Ewan and Mara, who helps her grandmother's run their family pub are going in Ewan's car. Also arriving separately are Abigail and her brother, Tommy who work for Emilie as her gardener and Abigail runs the office and household as well as helps the doctor when needed. Abigail and Tommy are going to stay in one of the small cottages on the property. Tommy is mentally handicapped and does not like crowds, The snow storm is very intense and closes the roads so everyone has to stay at the Castle.

While in the garden solarium Emilie thinks she saw someone in the turret and is afraid that he could be hurt. She tells Ewan and they both go into the turret to check it out. She trips over something in the turret and it turns out to be a body. They both do not know who he is. She tells Ewan that she thinks she passed him in the hallway. The man wore a hoodie. Later it is found that the man is Angie's ex-husband, Robbie. He was poisoned by anti-freeze.

The two families are at odds with Angie and Damian marrying each other, especially Damian's family. There is a lot of hostility also with the bridesmaids. The first night there the men are having a stag night in another part of the castle with the ladies having a ladies night. At the party Mara and Angie got sick. When tested it was found that they also were poisoned with anti-freeze. Who was doing this?

This is where the story takes off taking the reader on an adventure of who killed Robbie and who was trying to kill Angie to stop the wedding. There is so much going on in the story that it is hard to put on paper. I will leave it to the reader to enjoy. There are so many suspects, deception and disappearances that the reader is not sure who is the killer until the surprising end. In spite of all that is going on Angie and Damien do have their wedding.

I enjoyed the story with all the suspense and look forward to the next book in the series. Although Emilie and Ewan butt heads there are sparks between them and I am interested to see where the relationship goes.

Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC.

It was a fun book to read, not too exciting, but overall a fun cozy mystery read.

The ending was not too twisty or unexpected, but still a fun read overall.

Thank you for the ARC, NetGalley!

Dr. Emilia McRoy moved to Sea Isle from Seattle where she now works as a coroner. So far she’s made friends with Mara who helps her grandparents manage their pub; Jasper, a French-trained pâtissier artist who created the elaborate wedding cakes for Angie— another friend— who’s getting married. They’re all looking forward to attending the gothic-themed wedding. which is a four-day event.

However, at the castle where the wedding is set to take place, a man is found dead. Who killed him and why?

An interesting mystery. Would recommend.
Thank you to Lucy Connelly, NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the arc of this book.

Dr. Emilia McRoy has recently relocated from Seattle to the coast of Scotland. She is the local doctor and coroner. She has a bit of friction with the local constable. But she has made some firm friendships with several of the locals.

One of her friends is getting married at a local castle. But the weather didn't get the email. They are all snowed in for the duration of the elaborate, Scottish wedding. But then, a body is found. The coroner part of Em kicks in. In addition, the bride and one of her best friends are poisoned. Then, the murderer comes after Emilia, suspecting that she is getting too close to the solution.

In a very well written mystery, we learn more about the Scottish traditions. And we get a ripping good plot. Characters were well-developed. Dialogue was crisp and engaging. The identity of the murderer(s) wasn't entirely surprising but the book had a good share of twists and turns. This was a great read!

The second in a series finds Dr. Emilia McCoy at a friend's wedding when there is a murder in the castle where everyone is staying. This quickly becomes a classic mystery in an isolated location (in this case, stranded by a blizzard) in which one of the people present has to be the murderer. The plot was interesting and the characters are charming with some romantic overtones. Parts of the story seemed repetitive, as Emilia and her friends reviewed the evidence over and over without making much progress. Overall a charming story with characters I will be interested to follow. This is the second in a series but works as a standalone (I haven't read the first and it didn't hurt my understanding of the characters). Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane for the ARC.

This is the second book in a series, and although I did not read the first, I had no trouble picking up on what had taken place previously.

Dr. Emilia (“Em”) McRoy moved from Seattle to Sea Isle in Scotland only three months ago, but it already felt like home to her. She has a good practice, a possible romantic interest in Ewan Campbell (albeit one both she and Ewan deny to themselves) and a new set of best friends.

One of them, Angie, was getting married, choosing as her venue for the four-day event Morrigan’s Castle, owned by Ewan, who was laird, mayor, and Constable of Sea Isle. But the weather threw a wrench into the works. Em, along with the guests, got snowed in at the castle by a blizzard, a situation made fraught with even more peril when a dead man was found in one of the turrets. Moreover, others in the wedding party were victims of poisoning that same first night.

The roads were closed so no one could leave; internet service was down; and obviously the killer was still among those in the castle. And whoever he or she, or even they, may have been, the doctor was getting in the way of the planned disruption, and had to be eliminated.

Evaluation: This is a pleasant “cozy” mystery, with predictable (but not annoyingly so) romantic elements. There isn’t much in the way of Scottish atmospherics, but I imagine the particulars of a murder took precedent. I wouldn’t mind at all continuing with the series.

This had all the makings of a great read: a spin on the classic country house mystery, with the addition of being set during a snowstorm at a Scottish castle. Perfect!

But it didn’t deliver.

What I found endearing in the first book felt stale and rehashed. By the end, I found myself actively disliking Emilia, which is a bit of a dealbreaker for a series. I found her smug and self-satisfied, and she seemed to use “I’m a doctor and I’m the coroner” as an excuse to interfere in every possible scenario. Another thing I found irritating as a reader was the constant gushing about her newfound friends and what a close knit ‘gang’ they were and how much they all loved each other and were a family etc etc. Repeatedly. It felt as if I were twelve again, reading about Nancy Drew and her chums solving mysteries.

The mystery itself was disappointingly lackluster, and for 3/4 of the book it felt like endless pages of Emilia and ‘the gang’ discussing ad nauseum the events of the night in question, despite the fact that no one seemed able to remember anything at all of any importance. Towards the end of the book, Emilia says to the others, “I feel like we keep going over the same things but we aren’t any closer.” This reader agrees wholeheartedly with that statement.

The conclusion came with no great twist and things fell into place with a bit of a weak fizzle. Random clues were never pursued, no one seemed to have the ability to remember who handed them what and when or tell any of the apparently countless dark haired women apart. Are people really this unobservant?

I won’t be continuing this series. It lacks the depth and gradual unveiling I love in a good mystery, and I think this author does way too much telling, not enough showing.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book in exchange for my honest feedback.

Dr. McRoy is ready for her good friend, Angie’s, wedding at a gothic Scottish castle. All her friends are there as well as the Constable Ewen Campbell. Fun is had by all until, murder happens. Someone is trying to hurt or kill the bride and anyone who gets in the way. The wedding party is snowed in for days with a killer on the the loose. The doctor and her friends ,must find the killer before more death occurs, and so the wedding can go on. This was a very cozy mystery in the vein of Sheila Connolly’s Scottish mysteries.

Death at a Scottish wedding is a nice follow up to the first book in this delightful series. This certainly was a page turner. full of suspense and plot twists that kept me up reading late into the night. Thank you for the ARC netgalley. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next book in this series! 5/5 stars. ☆☆☆☆☆

Emilia, or Em, an American transplant doctor in Scotland, goes to a wedding in a castle with her friends. Finding a body, and then attacks on the bride to be as well as Em, shows a major concern. Liked this one and kept my interest throughout. Fun read, and one I would highly recommend. This is book 2, but can be read alone.

This is the second book in the series but works well as a standalone. The small town Scotish setting of this mystery acted as a beautiful backdrop to solving the case. I found the characters very interesting, A charming heroine, unique setting, and unexpected surprises. The writing and story were creative and very well done. I want to read the first book now!

Although this book is the second in a series, it was the first one I read. I found the story of Dr. Emilia McRoy, who has left Seattle for Scotland to be engaging and the mystery well written.

I will go back and read the first book in the series, but this story works as a stand alone. Apparently, transplanted Emilia has found some good friends in the delightful Scottish town of Sea Isle, and she is attending the wedding of one of them. As all the guests gather in the Scottish castle for three days of wedding events, a murder occurs of a man who no one recognizes. Adding to that mix, there is a blizzard and everyone is snowed in with the murderer among them. Very Agatha Christie!

The murder mystery is very good, but what I loved about the book were the characterizations and the setting. There is also a slow burn of potential romantic interest between the constable who is also the laird of the castle and Emilia.
Because Emilia also acts as coroner of the small town, the sleuthing does not seem far fetched.

An absolute delight of a novel!

The second in a string series about an American ER doctor who moves to a small town in Scotland. I had thoroughly enjoyed the first book, and this sequel did not disappoint either. Emilia and her new friends are back on the job when friend Angie’s wedding becomes a target for murder and family drama. The whole party is snowed in, so it’s up to Emilia, laird and constable Ewan, and friends to try to figure out who is trying to do away with wedding guests. The plot is compelling and moves along quickly, and there is good character development for characters we met in the first book. The Scottish setting and phrasing is done well, and I like that main characters have very plausible for investigating as they do. You could read this as a stand-alone, but I’d recommend reading the first, partly because it’s very good.

In the second Scottish Isle Mystery by Lucy Connelly, Emilia feels as if she's made a successful transition in the past three months from her hectic Seattle ER physician position to town doctor and coroner in tiny Sea Isle, Scotland. She is looking forward to attending her new friend Angie's four-day wedding extravaganza in Morrigan Castle, although the snowstorm of the century seems to be closing in. But as it turns out, the weather isn't the most traumatic thing the guests will be facing. The suspicious death in the castle of an unidentified man who was not invited to the festivities causes everyone to speculate whether someone is trying to derail the wedding altogether, and why.

I was happy to see that interesting characters we met in the first book in the series are in attendance: Em's wealthy landlord and town constable Ewan; her housekeeper and medical assistant, Abigail, and her neurodivergent brother, Tommy; and other new friends, Mara and Jasper. But there's also the groom, his brother and disapproving parents, and Angie's multiple stepmothers in the mix. Narrator Emilia details her own involvement as the only doctor available when suspicious injuries to occur to other guests and her attempts to help Ewan sift through the many suspects, sometimes putting herself in dangerous situations.

While the author knows how to ratchet up the suspense successfully, I wanted more balance between the mystery and Em's personal life, as portrayed so well in the last book. I'm hoping the next in the series will take her back to her Sea Isle home for more about the delightful town, its quirky inhabitants, and Emilia's new life and relationships.

My thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this book.
