I think perhaps the first book was a fluke for me. It’s not the kind of book I’d normally choose but it just worked. I think I’m not the right audience for this series as a whole, though.

This second book in Dresden Codex trilogy expands on the magic, adds some depth to the Roth children, and is filled with action. This series has an interesting premise, and while I'm not one to jump all over the sci-fi genre, Mr. Wheeler has done a great job in making the magic plausible. The characters react to the magical elements in believable ways, which has kept me engaged. I look forward to the 3rd and final entry in this trilogy! Thanks to NetGalley and 47North for this DRC.

Jeff Wheeler continues the tale of writer Jonathon Roth whose family survived the Mayan Doomsday Match (paper) the previous year. While his wife is being held captive, he has kept things secret, but now he needs to see the Jaguar Prophecies(paper from 47North) kept in a museum in Dresden. The Jaguar priests are soon after him and if he hadn’t taken precautions, he and his family would be dead. However they end up in the underground temple where a new death game has started. The final book will complete the series.

Jaguar Prophecies is the second book in the Desden Codex series by Jeff Wheeler. Picking up almost a year after the harrowing events of the first book, Jonathan and his family (sans his wife who’s fate he remains unsure about) are off on a trip to Germany to spend Christmas with his sister, though the trip is merely cover for him to continue his covert attempts to dig deeper into the events from the first book, to look for a solution to the coming storm of destruction and chaos. It’s not long before things go sideways and the Roth family are once again running for their lives from the sinister Jacob Calakmul. Like the first book this one is also an excellent, fast paced thriller, but it has a much different vibe. It’s one long, relentless chase, as Jonathan and his kids attempt to evade Calakmul and his forces. And as the middle book of a trilogy we end with characters in peril. While the stories are nothing alike, it has an almost Empire Strikes Back meets Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones-esque vibe to it, and I seriously can not wait to see how Jeff wraps up this story. I’d like to thank 47 North and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review Jaguar Prophecies.

This book had pretty good action, but I feel like it was missing some of the fantasy/world building of the first book. The ending left some to be desired for me too. I get there is a book 3 but still, would have wanted more of a wrap up of the second story first.

Second in a series, would recommend reading the first book first. More of a young adult vibe. Original yet familiar and exciting.

Thanks to NetGalley & 47North for providing me this book to review!

The Roth family is back and it's been a year since their misadventure in the jungles of Mexico. No one's the same and there's been no word of the family member they were forced to leave behind with Jacob Calakmul's threats ringing in their ears. But Jonathon Roth won't let this evil lie and he's been working in secret to start fighting again. Will his family survive another run in with Calakmul and the ancient magic that makes up his world or will they lose more of themselves along the way?

This is my 18th Jeff Wheeler book and they never disappoint! I received the first book of the Dresden Codex for review and while I always enjoy Wheeler's books, the first in the series had some flaws for me (as pointed out in my first review) but for everywhere the first might have strayed, the follow-up stayed the course! The pacing of the sequel was right on and I was swept back into the story from the first page. The twists and turns of the story kept me guessing and wondering how they'd stay a step ahead.

I highly recommend picking up the Jaguar Prophecies (or all the Jeff Wheeler books)! You won't regret it. Here's hoping the third comes soon!

This book knocked it out of the park. My heart is still pounding from the suspense. Fantastic globe trotting twisty on the run tale. Makes me think of the Dan Brown Da Vinci Code books. Cannot wait for the next book to see how everything gets resolved. Go Roth Go!

I received a free copy against an honest review. Thanks to the author and 47North.

What a good sequel to Doomsday Match! I enjoyed it as much as the first installment in the series, if not more. We follow Roth and his family one year after the events from the first book, and Roth has been busy preparing his revenge against Calakmul. It's with great pleasure that I went back into the story. It started extremely well, with a lot of action, tension, and mystery, but stalled a little in the second half of the book, hence why it didn't get the 5 stars I thought I would give it when I started reading. As in the first book, the conspiracy often feels over the top, but it is acknowledged by the protagonist multiple times during the book, and is still well executed, helping the reader suspend their disbelief. I also enjoyed learning more about the antagonist and seeing his flaws and character growth.

This second installment truly reads like a "transition book" and ends on a cliffhanger that is surprisingly not frustrating. It will make you want to read the third and last installment. I look forward to reading Final Strike.

Jaguar Prophecies is book two in The Dresden Codex series by Jeff Wheeler.
A fantastic fantasy adventure series.
The world-building is fantastic here and I found the characters very likable and relatable.
The pacing, plot, characters, and narration make this an enjoyable story.
I can’t wait for book three Final Strike.

Thank You NetGalley and 47North for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!

I was unsure of this series while reading the beginning of the first book. Mainly because it’s a bit of a departure from the author’s other, primarily fantasy worlds, however, as the story continued, it sucked me in. I read the second half of the previous book, and this one in a day.

There are many unanticipated plot twists (and I have a hard time being surprised and not figuring things out earlier on with books, TV series, and Movies) and hints for the reader to solve as well as, fascinating details about Mesoamerican culture.

I highly recommend this book and series for all.

This fast paced thriller is full of adventure. I enjoyed the gun fights, a car chase and there’s a hostage situation. The book centres around Maya magic, prophecy and apocalyptic threat. I most enjoyed the part in Germany, were the codex is, the culture was captured well. The plot is great and action packed but I did not connect to the characters. There could have been more depth or quirks to them. I would recommend reading this book around Christmas time as this was when it was set, there’s also plenty of snow - this would make for a more immersive read. When I finished it I felt like I had been on a wild ride and that’s something I like from a thriller. Thank you to NetGalley and 47North for an E-ARC. This is a voluntary review of my own thoughts.

Jaguar Prophecies is book 2 in the Dresden Codex trilogy.

It has been a year since the Roth's survived the death games but Jacob Calakmul is still keeping an eye on him as he doesn't trust him. Jacob is right not to trust him as the reason Jonathan takes his family to Germany is to see the Dresden Codex and the Prophecy.

This book was action-packed; loads of car chases and things happening all over the globe. There were things I suspected in the first book and was proven right in this book. I felt there was something missing in this book but can't put my finger on what, but otherwise I'm looking forward to the finale!

Prepare to delve deeper into the Jaguar Prophecy as Jonathan Roth races against time to discover its secrets and protect his family, and the world from what is to come.
A Christmas vacation to Germany to visit his sister, a year after he lost his wife, sets in motion a chain events that will follow them home and thrust the family into the sights of Jacob Calakmul again, whom he has fought hard to keep in the dark to what he has truly been up to this last year. The bullets will fly, priests will use their magic against them and Suki will use what she has learned to protect herself. Friend may be foe, not one is who they seem and Roth will not know who to trust. Another fight to survive Christmas is upon them and it will take all the have to make it through the night.
It sets the stage and the place for what I am sure will be another battle to end all battles
. I do not want to spoil anything, so I will keep it short and simple. You do not want to miss this series!
It is thrilling, action pact and emotional and you will not soon forget it.

Jeff Wheeler does it again in this book, it had everything that I was looking for from his previous books. The characters were strongly written and flowed well with the plot. It had everything that I enjoyed from the genre and from Jeff Wheeler.

For Jonathon Roth and his family, a vacation in Cozumel became a nightmare. Pawns in a deadly ritual, Roth and his children barely escaped with their lives, and with the secrets of mastermind Jacob Calakmul. Calakmul’s endgame: to fulfill the Jaguar Prophecies—the foretelling of an inevitable Armageddon, one that will destroy entire nations. The key to stopping it is to retrieve an ancient codex—if Roth can decipher it.

Firstly, I have to say I did not realize this book was the second in a series. Regardless, it was fairly easy to catch up and catch on to what had happened and what was happening. This is an enjoyable action packed thriller that literally takes place over a few days. I would be interested in picking up the next in the series.

I absolutely loved this book. More than even the first one.
Reading Jaguar Prophecies was so much fun. I loved knowing our characters from the first book and seeing them grow and flourish even more. The fact that most of the book is based in their home town really helped me see who Roth and his children are.
The insights into Jacob were also fascinated. I loved reading his perspectives. They almost made me actually like him (good job that's a real good job right there).
The suspense was fantastic and only slightly anxiety ridden for me. I think having read the first book and knowing there is a second one coming I had more faith in where the story was going and more optimism.
Boy oh boy! I did not expect some of those plot twists though. I thought things were going one way, psych they weren't. I literally could not predict anything in this book yet after reading it I know it was perfectly crafted and I couldn't see the story playing out any other way.

I particularly loved getting a greater insight into the magic system in this book. That and also seeing Roth act more in confidence rather than just fear. Fantastic read. I'm dying for the next book and can't wait to see what comes next.

Content:
Romance: A kiss or two, and references characters love and desire for other characters with no romance action happening on the page.
Trigger Warnings: this is a thriller, thus there was fighting, and suspense, and crazyness. Read at your own risk.

This is a great little series. I picked it up because the first novel was set in the Yucatán. I spend a lot of time there since I have a house in Progreso (on the coast about an hour and a half from Chichén Itzá). I loved seeing some of the history and places I know in this series. It really made the books come alive for me. The first novel was a bit more clunky with the storyline and dialogue, but the author really seems to have found his rhythm with the second one. An action adventure thriller through and through, this one kept me invested through the end. I’ll definitely be reading the last book in the series when it comes out!

Huge thanks to 47North and NetGalley for sending me this ARC for review! All of my reviews are given honestly!

This title was so good. I was a little nervous after the first one... it started slow and picked up in the last quarter. However, this one took off right where the last one ended. The recap wasn't overbearing or frustrating. There were times where my pulse was fast just reading the book- that's hard to do!

I can't wait for the 3rd one.
