Well Young has done it again! The setting is perfect, the conflict is interesting, and like all good multigenerational family sagas, this one is beautifully complicated and interwoven. THE UNMAKING OF JUNE FARROW is way more than just a novel about time travel. The Farrow women are fascinating and imperfect. Young leads readers to believe the curse is one thing, but then when you really dig in to it, it's something else entirely, making it all the more heartbreaking how it's coupled up with a few small town unsolved mysteries. And Young gives readers a protagonist in her 30s who is mostly settled and established in her life! This isn't your typical Adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy that is full of late teens/early 20s characters.
Once I started, this was hard to put down. The pacing is slow, but I think that adds to the atmosphere of the both the plot and of the setting in a rural North Carolina town. The one thing I wish Young gave us more of was Eamon and Mason's storylines.
Advanced Reader’s Copy provided by NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, and Delacorte Press in exchange for an honest review.

This book went a little over my head I think. The time travel aspects of the story were confusing for me. I struggled to wrap my head around it. It would have helped me to have a character in the book who was an "expert" regarding the time travel who could explain the rules surrounding it. Because the characters in the book didn't fully grasp the time travel, I struggled to follow the story line. I also felt like some characters were forgotten because they were part of the other timeline. I would have liked more closure with those characters. Finally, the pacing of this was very slow and a little repetitive. The mystery subplot really saved this book for me and is ultimately why I gave it a mid rating.

A centuries-old curse has haunted a North Carolina family and the latest Farrow woman, June, will risk everything to end it. The door — always thought to be the sign of madness — appears to take June back in time where she will change the past and future, an impossible feat in a story rooted in, love, family and redemption.
While I found some parts hard to follow, this was a beautiful and imaginative story from a brilliant author.
Thank you to Random House-Ballantine for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I tried so hard to get into this book. I have been reading it in pieces for months. I read a book a day and I couldn’t get invested in the story. I did finish but this book was so sloggy. It was not for me.

I love Adrienne young. I was really hopeful about this book but I ended up not finishing it :/ not exactly sure why but it wasn’t as gripping or interesting to me as her other stories. This may be a me issue as I think it’s just a personal preference. This book read a bit more like literary fiction than her others which I don’t love but I bet a lot of people will. I’m not going to review it bc I don’t want to leave a negative review

I own Spells for Forgetting, but have not read it yet so this was my first from Young. I absolutely loved it and I can not wait to read Spells. This author is so talented with her beautiful prose. I had a hard time putting this one down.

This was one of those books I THOUGHT I had figured out, but was totally wrong. I just needed to sit back and enjoy the ride on this one. Adrienne Young has an incredible way of taking a reader completely into the atmosphere of the novel, and even though the story had multiple timelines and I never really knew what was going to happen, she managed to make me care about the characters and the storyline. This was charming and romantic and at times quite tense, and it was only around 300 pages (which for a magical/fantasy is pretty short!) I loved the process of reading it, and I only wish I could have gotten more filler of the characters' lives because I ended up loving them so much. Great read.

Another great read from Adrienne young! This one reminded me a little too much of Spells for Forgetting so I felt like this was just not what I wanted

The Farrow women are known for two things: 1) their flower farm and 2) their curse. June is the last of the Farrow's and she plans to keep it that way. She has already started to see and hear things that aren't there, just like her mother; but unlike Susanna, June is determined that she will not leave any loved ones behind if she disappears. Then her grandmother dies, leaving her clues as to what really happened to her mother, and it very well might have something to do with the door she thought was just a hallucination. Are the answers to the curse behind that door? June decides to take a chance and find out if she can change what fate has had in mind from her since birth, and possibly solve some family mysteries at the same time.
In the Unmaking of June Farrow, Adrienne Young automatically pulls you in with her atmospheric writing. Immediately you are struck with mysticism and mystery, and you feel a connection with the characters from the first sentence. This is a slow burn mystery that just weaves you through and into the story. I wish I could bottle up the feelings I get from how this author can transport me into and through a story with her words, it was such a wonderful journey. The book itself is as much a portal of magic as the portal magic that it uses for the plot.
I absolutely adored everything about this book: the atmosphere, the story, the characters, the emotions, etc. It is not a fast-paced, wild ride of a thriller, although there are some action-packed moments - this is the only reason I can see as to why you would not want to read this book.
Adrienne Young introduced me to mystical realism with "Spells for Forgetting" and it made me fall in love with the subgenre and her writing, The Unmaking of June Farrow was even better for me and is one of the best books I have read in a long while. I loved everything about it, and am looking forward to going back and doing a reread to see some of the nuances in the story that I missed the first time around. This story truly transported me away to a different time, place and world for several hours. That is the definition of magic and Adrienne Young is the enchantress that has us all enthralled.

i absolutely LOVED this book!! Adrienne Young is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors for magical realism. This book has so much to it, it made me cry and laugh, made me feel happy, sad, anxious. June was such a relatable character! i really loved this one

I really enjoyed this story and thought it was so well written. I couldn't put it down! If you've enjoyed any of her other books, this is definitely one to read. I found it unpredictable and liked trying to solve the mystery.

I have been loving Adrienne's books as of late so when I saw this one available on Netgalley I knew I needed to try for it.
The cover is beautiful just like this story. A story of a family curse of the Farrow women.
I wasn't sure about our main character June in the beginning. I was worried I wouldn't like her but I ended up liking her at some point during the book and loving her by the end. I do wish we had seen a bit more of her and Mason though. Or maybe a story from Masons point of view.
That end though, was everything but now thinking back on it I might be a little confused. Is Junes life just a cycle and then the Farrow line ends with Annie because Annie never sees the door and possibly has no kids or what. I know she explained it in the end but I was up late reading it 😅.
I will definitely be ching out.more books from Adrienne in the future and thanks for much to Netgalley for q copy of this one.

This book had a lot of potential but disappointed me due to a few reasons. The curse on the farrow women remained a mystery even after the book ended. I understood what it entailed and how it affected the Farrow women, but the reasons behind why the Farrow women were cursed or who cursed them was never revealed. I understand that writing multiple timeline novels is a challenging. However, even taking notes, the explanation of how June could move between timelines was shaky at best. The main character was sympathetic, but I found myself bored with her and her decision making after a while. She is in her thirties, which was very exciting to me, yet her actions were quite immature and self serving. This book wasn't for me, but I hope other readers have a better time with it.

I have always really enjoyed Adrienne Young’s books, but I’m still surprised at how much I loved this book. It’s hard to say much without spoiling the twist of the story, and I would honestly go in knowing as little as possible to get the full experience. The writing was impeccable and the characters were so fully realized - highly recommended!
Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for granting me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did, but it's truly one of my favorite recent reads!
I normally do not love jeremy bearimys (iykyk), but the premise (and Western NC setting) were enough to make me give it a chance. I'm so glad I did! I really enjoyed the magical realism of this story, as well as the new take on breaking ~literal~ generational curses. The dynamic of the Farrow women was captivating, and I fell in love with all of them. I tore through this book in a day, and I absolutely shed a tear when it was over.
I'd recommend this book to historical fiction fans who enjoy a sparkle of magic. If you enjoyed the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, I think you'd love this read!

June Farrow has always lived a simple existence while growing up on her family's flower farm which is known for it's beautiful exotic flowers only found on Farrow land to the unique herbs and healing tinctures which tourists can't seem to get enough of when the seasons are right. June was raised by her loving grandmother (Gram) when her own mother disappeared when she was a little girl and June has never stopped wanting to solve her missing mother's mysterious life and why she didn't want to raise her own child. June knows the women in her family were cursed with an unknown inevitable mental illness occurring at any time in the Farrow women's lives so she knows she can never have a husband or children since the curse will pass on to her own female children and she refuses to even consider taking a risk. So June's future is doomed to be a lonely one indeed, although she's always been fine with that knowledgeable decision until Gram became gravely ill. June then began having hallucinations, hearing whispers and her name being called out by strange voices plus seeing a red door appearing in different locations out in the fields so June knows her time is coming. When Gram passes away though, it hits June much harder than she anticipated and feels her world completely turned upside down with a million questions but no one there to help her understand what is happening to her. June's need to find out about her mother's disappearance and feeling the pull of going through the red door (if that is even an option) plus missing Gram has rattled her life completely. Is June going crazy like the stories she had heard about her own mother or is there much more to this Farrow women curse than she could ever possibly understand.
This was an unexpected, beautiful story of quiet mystery, lost loves and a dual, mystical timeline full of secrets, lies and danger. Andrienne Young has written such an atmospheric and amazing story that was impossible to put down. I just needed to keep reading since I could never predict where this story would lead since I was truly mesmerized by the breathtaking writing! The beauty of the descriptive scenery and the heartfelt characters involved with the dual storylines evoked emotions that I wasn't prepared for nor could I predict the unexpected twists of so many characters who were a mainstay in June's life while June will always be an unforgettable character for myself!
I highly recommend this stunning novel and I will look forward to reading more books written by this very talented author.
I want to thank the publisher "Random House Publishing" and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this novel and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!
I have given a rating of 4 1/2 STUNNING AND MESMERIZING 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌠 STARS!!

O.M.G! I loved this book so much! The story was so unique and interesting. I loved how it spanned time, yet was also so present.
The characters were so well fleshed out and made you really feel for them. It's not all that often that I truly feel foe the characters. But the author nailed it with this story.

Astonishing - have gone back through The Unmaking of June Farrow two times in two days for the sheer joy of it. Adrienne Young has written with her thoughtful pen the kind of beckoning whispers through which fantasy, mystery and time are woven into a compelling read that wrapped round me completely shawl-like. It took me to the very last bit to unwind myself. Riding those threads I found characters to worry over, and soon cared about their journeys and conclusions. A quite satisfying read.
I'm not giving out any clues. . . .you'll just need to jump in on your own.
*A sincere thank you to Adrienne Young, Random House Publishing Group, and NetGalley for and ARC to read and independently review.* #TheUnmakingofJuneFarrow #NetGalley 52:5

4.5 stars // Beautifully written and immersive as I’ve come to expect from Adrienne Young. A hint of mystery, romance and time travel. Honestly would be a perfect little fall read.
