Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to get an ARC for this book by Patrick Scott. I wanted to love it. And I would give the next book in the series a chance, some characters do take getting used to. But this was a lot and rather confusing. I appreciated the opportunity to try it out as I hadn't read anything by Patrick Scott yet, but I will give it another chance. The main character wasn't one that I immediately gravitated towards, but you never know.

I have so many thoughts on this book and I am so lost. I can't figure out what this book is even about. In the beginning Faye the main character is so crass that I really had a hard time liking her and I'm not sure I even liked her by the end. She lives with three other roommates and is an unrequited love fest with one roommates older brother. There was some strange thing that happens once in a forest that is really never mentioned again and I'm guessing that is the magic, but who knows. Faye's mentor gets kidnapped and the other roommates help her figure out where she went but even that didn't make any sense. This story felt like there were three plot lines with no congruence bringing them together. There are way to many questions about everything and not in a good mystery kind of way but in a this book needs a good editing way. The book also has Loci of Power in the title and not once was that even mentioned. 2.5 stars

This book was good but I found myself confused a lot. It seemed to jump around and almost felt like I couldn’t keep up at time. There was a whole section about a guy named Hannibal and a night in a secret room and then he just drops off. I’m not sure if the author plans to loop the story back around including him or not. I feel like I have a general idea of what will happen next but like I said it left me thoroughly confused as well. I’m not sure if would recommend this book based on that fact. Maybe if it seemed to connect a little better then it wouldn’t have been as confusing but that whole part of the book seems to have just been added in for maybe a suspense aspect at this point again I’m not sure. I’m mildly interested to see if book two can make the story connect a little better but at the same time I’m not sure i will continue it.

I enjoyed this very much! It was great writing and a great storyline. I loved the fantasy aspect and look forward to more!

I wanted to enjoy this book but just couldn't. I found that I was forcing myself to get through it so I could try to understand what is going on. To me the book felt like it was thrown together and didn't flow easy. I'm am not sure why this book is labeled as a fantasy book besides one thing that happens, I would much more likely call this book and the series under the realm of mystery due to the opening of more questions vs answers the author provides while reading.

I was hoping to become attached to any of the characters but that was just not the case in this book. Instead the whole time I felt confused and unsure as to what was even going on because one minute the main character is upset about a boy she likes, the next helping someone she was told to help, then her mentor is missing, then her and her roommates go into rescue mode to find the mentor, to be followed by a plot twist regarding the mentor. From there her family and roommates are captured to which she recuses them, and then they are back at school. The flow of all this was very cut and not transitioned well in my opinion because while the transitions are there, the whole time the main character is just asking questions and not getting answers, leaving the reader frustrated and confused while trying to follow the story.

You follow the main character Frye who clearly does nothing but keep secrets about her past, her feelings, and is so disconnected from herself due to her trauma that her roommates have to tell her they are worried about her "sleepwalking" (that is what I am going to call it as she has no memory of doing it and it happens after she goes to bed). Along side that problem, there is a whole other ordeal going on that just doesn't make sense about hunters and gatherers. The whole book it is like this topic is danced around while the main character wants answers and isn't getting them, yet her roommates seem to know what is going on and what the difference between those two roles is? I would have liked to at least received one answer from this book to make me want to give the second book a chance but its lack of detail around the plot left me upset.

Unburied is an easy read well paced novel about the adventures of Faye as she discovers her new reality.

This was a great start to the Loci of Power series, it had everything that I was expecting from an opening chapter in the series. The characters were perfect for the world and I enjoyed the fantasy element going on. It left me wanting to read more in this series and from the author. Patrick Scott does a great job in writing this.
