This was sweet! I read the first half of it, but I knew exactly where it was going to so put it aside for now. Emma Lord has a really sweet writing style, imbued with a real sense of teenage innocence. I enjoyed that she was ending narrator Riley down a path of real growth and discovery; immediately following her high school graduation, Riley takes off for a summer in New York City where she reunites with her best friend Tom (who also happens to have had a glow-up in the past few years). It's clear Riley and Tom will end up together, but I also enjoyed Lord's cast of characters that make up Riley's friend. The story just felt so young to me...Riley's mother was a teen mom so there's vague references to sex and relationships, but it's really squeaky clean. It's also possible that finally in my 30s I've reached a limit on YA novels. That said, for her target audience, Lord writes really lovely, fun, and sweet books.

This coming of age, friends to more story was fun and sweet. I enjoyed the check list concept and the different adventures that it took Riley and Tom on. The group of friends they create over the summer were fun and quirky and would love to see another book featuring another one of them. This explored themes of being raised by single moms, following rules, following dreams and standing up for yourself. This would be a great summer read especially if you have a plan to Vivian New York City.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Matin’s Press/ Wednesday Books for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Any time I am feeling sad, Tweet Cute is always my favorite reread to feel better so I was beyond excited to read this. There is something so endearing about Emma Lord's Young Adult novels and I need her to write 10000 more immediately so that I have a new one to read any time I am feeling down. I was honestly a little scared going into this novel because I wasn't sure that same spark she captured before would be in this one as well but I was not disappointed at all. I am interested in seeing how her adult books are but I am now more excited to read them. Everything about this was fun, mischievous, and has you giggling the entire time. I will always recommend her novels to everyone I know.

In The Getaway List, Riley Larson, who has received rejections from all ten colleges she applied to, decides to defy her controlling mother and take back the spontaneity in her life. She heads to NYC where she reunites with her childhood friend Tom with whom she created a Getaway List. Over their three-year separation, Tom had grown distant, and Riley discovers her mother had plotted to keep them apart. Fueled by her anger, Riley decides to stay for the whole summer to work through the list with Tom and his quirky friends, camping, going to concerts, and exploring the city. Tom's screenwriter mother is on an extended stay in LA, so Riley and Tom are free to not only discover themselves, but also their romantic feelings for each other. The supporting characters are well-developed, and the author's affectionate portrayal of NYC adds to the charm of the novel.

What a lovely, sweet, and poignant coming of age novel! It keeps the light and breezy touch that Ms. Lord is known for but burrows in with a depth and tenderness that resonates with anyone, young or old, who has felt lost on their journey to find themselves.

Riley's character is especially touching and relatable. She is so full of life and fire but yet still so young and unsure of herself and her place in the world. She has courage and the determination to overcome and grow, and that is such an impressive lesson for readers to experience as they follow her through that growth. The secondary characters are also enjoyable and easy to like, each with their specific quirks and gifts. Ms. Lord did a fabulous job of painting a picture of modern day teens in a positive way, while still uncovering their youthful inexperience realistically. I do think there are times the character's insights came across as much older than their 18 years and, given the world we live in, the ability to do many of the things they did may not seem completely viable.

Still, the messages, the struggles, and the hope shine so brightly that one can't help but adore both the characters and the story. It is truly a delight and one that leaves a sweet smile as the last page turns.

Super cute as always, but that may be why I didn’t love it. Books by this author are becoming redundant and hard to distinguish between them as they are all very similar with characters who are interchangeable from each book. They all use same dialogue and similar conflicts.

Emma Lord is one of my auto-buy authors. It's always a special feeling to start her new book each year!

As with her other books, the writing in THE GETAWAY LIST is fantastic and the story is just as sweet. I adored the friendship between Riley and Tom. Their adventures and banter were adorable and had me smiling constantly. The story also had depth and was emotional; specifically Riley's relationship with her mother.

THE GETAWAY LIST is a heartwarming story of found family, friendship, and love.

I adored The Getaway List! Emma Lord is the queen of new adult books. Her characters always hit home for me and are so fun. The adventures in the Getaway List were so much fun and made me feel like I was there.

Such a cute YA read! I love the adventure in Manhattan, finding yourself as a new adult, and learning who you are without your parent's themes in this book. The perfect read for anyone!

There is something about Emma Lord's writing that just ropes me in every time. The way she writes about New York City specifically is so captivating, it not only captures the essence of the city, but makes it feel like a living breathing part of the story. Even if I can’t always resonate with the characters’ struggles she always sets the scene and mood perfectly. In this case, I wish I could’ve been part of this motley crew running around the city all summer, all while trying to find their place in the world.

This was very cute - heartwarming and pure YA. Tom and Riley’s relationship was sweet and although it felt obvious that they were into each other, for some reason it wasn’t annoying that they didn’t just talk about it. This was very teen-appropriate and had good messages about self-esteem, finding one’s own way, and the importance of family. I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

I loved the idea of the best friends who have a type of bucket list together and set out to complete it. Riley visits Tom after feeling like she needs a break from the pressure of her mom and preparing for college. They decide to complete The Getaway List that they never finished before he moved.

My favorite part of this book was the cast of characters, especially the supporting characters, and their relationships.

I was a fan of Tweet Cute so I was excited to read this one by the same author. The Getaway List is a cute YA romance. It very much follows the YA formula so if you love that, you will love this.

First, I love Emma Lord's YA romances! Second, Riley and Tom are just the cutest childhood friends-to-lovers couple you could ask for! Set in New York City, this is a coming of age story full of adventure, love, friendships, and figuring out life post high school graduation. This was delightful and heartwarming and swoony!

This was my second Emma Lord book and I enjoyed it much more than the first one I read. I loved the characters and the NYC setting. I enjoyed my time with this book but I think I just don't quite vibe with her writing style.

The Getaway List was a really engaging story about 2 best friends reconnecting and rediscovering their friendship, while discovering themselves.
I loved Riley and Tom's connection and enjoyed seeing them get to know each other all over again. The idea of the Getaway List was so fun and I loved that they finally got to cross everything off of it. Meeting new friends along the way was a bonus. And realizing the love they had for each other was the icing on the cake!

While Riley and Tom's relationship was the highpoint, family relationships played a big part in this story as well. They each had their fair share of motherly drama, with Riley's being too involved, and Tom's basically MIA. There was a lot to work through in those relationships, and I was glad to see that happen as the book went on.

This is another book that would be great on the big screen. Having read Edward Underhill's This Day Changes Everything, I could see these two books overlapping and converging on the streets of NYC- how fun would that be???

I LOVED Emma Lord’s novel Begin Again, so I knew I had to read The Getaway List when I saw it coming out. This story follows Riley as she goes off on a coming-of-age adventure with her childhood friend Tom.

Right off the bat, I love all these characters. The friend group in this story is next level. You have someone for everyone to relate to. You have the nerd, the rockstar/popular friend, the sassy friend, and more. I loved the adventures the group went on and the lessons these teens learned from each other. The development and growth we see in all these characters is the winner of this story. While this story follows along with Riley, I really think the point of the story is how teenagers or young adults in this age group just don’t know who they are fully and have to find out for themselves who they are and what they want. I really enjoyed the talk between the mother and daughter and how the mom had to come to terms with her own past. As a mother, I found these scenes meaningful and memorable.

I have two small qualms with this book and the bigger of the two is that the story was a little slow at times. It seemed like there was a lot of repetitive days and feelings throughout where it was almost as if the author was filling space. I wanted these to flow smoother and keep me wanting to read. I remember that feeling with Begin Again and I was hoping for it, but it felt short at times. The other issue I had was the references to the movie or show they were constantly going on adventures for. I felt, as a reader, that I didn’t know much about this series for it to be referred to so much and almost felt confused as they went on adventures, which left me feeling disconnected from the book during those moments.

While those two small issues had me feeling separated from the book at times, my overall enjoyment of the book was not overly affected and I really enjoyed the story as a whole. If you loved Emma Lord in the past or just love really good YA Fiction novels with a lot of personal growth, The Getaway List is for you!

This adventure of Riley and Tom finding their true selves, true friends, and true love was cute. If I could go back to being 18 I would want to run off on adventures and have my own getaway list but since I can't I'm glad I got to live vicariously through these two friends. This was a cute book and a nice escape from life.
