A Field Guide to Backyard Birds of North America is a well illustrated field guide to common birds of North America written by Rob Hume. Originally published in 2007, this reformat and re-release from Quarto on their Chartwell imprint was released 12th Sept 2023. It's 208 pages and is available in paperback format.

The author does a great job of introducing birding and general bird anatomy for beginners. The introductory chapters include some basic ornithology and some practical suggestions. There's a very good overview over equipment including a primer on selecting and using binoculars. The book contains a directory, which includes well drawn color illustrations of common birds, their distinguishing features, and ranges, general sizes, and other features including diet and behavior. Unfortunately, the author/publisher have chosen not to use proper nomenclature, electing to use the most recognized common names for each species.

The bulk of the book is taken up by a 2 year field log in which readers can record their observations. Each page of the log includes spaces for species, notes, weather, location, and behavior. The pages also include practical bird tracker tips in a highlighted text bar.

This would be a superlative gift or for home use. Due to the logbook nature, it would have very limited use for public or school library acquisition. It could also be a good choice for scouting, camp, or group activities.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This field guide to everyday birds that we see in North America is very comprehensive. It contains information with respect to their anatomy, colors and patterns, their food and feeding habits, pictures of their nests and tips on how to make the most of your birding adventures.

While I enjoy learning about birds, I am not a birder; simply because I’m not an outdoors sort of gal but I did enjoy this book. I especially enjoyed looking at the type of nests each species build. Even if you don’t bird watch but enjoy learning about birds, I highly recommend this book.

Thank you to Netgalley and Chartwell Books for a copy of this book.

This looks like a good beginner birder journal. It outlines several birds one might find in our own neighborhoods, including an artist’s rendering. Considerable space is left for documenting bird sightings. While it does not include a comprehensive list of birds (for the Northwest, let alone North America) it will make a lovely gift for someone exploring birdwatching and will certainly give a sting base for more research.

I have always been fascinated with birds and have often toyed with the idea of taking up birdwatching as a hobby. Having never taken that plunge, I found this book to be a great way for a novice like me to learn about common birds that I may easily encounter. I have purchased other field guides in the past but was honestly overwhelmed at the amount of information in them. This is a beginner friendly way to get into the hobby and build up your knowledge before tackling the tougher birds to find. I have also since seen a finished copy of this book and the pictures are lovely and the log is great as well. This would even be a great gift for a young adult who has an interest in birds as well.

This is a friendly small-scale bird guide for any newbie. It has nice images, and the author gives you a bit of information about each bird, but I did find a few details on some of what the birds eat to be incorrect so make sure you follow up on better research as you find new birds. What I did like about this book is the yearly tracking guide for you to fill out as you discover new birds and the where the bird's winters category.

All in all, if you're looking to explore backyard birds in your backyard, then, by all means, add this book to your to-be-read list, it will give you great help along the way.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

I loved this book, it is the most through book on not only identifying birds, but it includes limitless information on birds, from their beaks to their claws as well as an awesome journal to keep track of the various birds you have seen and identified.

This is literally the one and ONLY book you need for a successful hobby enjoying birds!

I am buying a copy,.

A Field Guide to Backyard Birds of North America by Rob Hume is spectacular and so well done! It covers every common bird that is in our backyards and more. The beauty of this book should not be overlooked. Also the field guides and beautiful pages to fill with notes. At one point I grabbed my heart because it is truly beautiful.

I would also love to see perhaps a four-section of North America of birds done by Rob Hume also.
It's a visual directory brimming with full-color art of birds covering bird finder at a glance, bird life, making the most of birding, a bird catalog, logbook. Each section is full of every useful thing about backyard birds in those sections.

This would make a great gift for the bird lover in your life and especially for libraries.

I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher Quatro Publishing for the opportunity to read and review A Field Guide to Backyard Birds of North America by Rob Hume.

Everything the title promised, and then some. This is not my normal type of read, but who doesn't want to know more about the birds we see everyday. A wonderfully illustrated, very readable book -- well-organized and, overall, a true delight.

I think this book would make an excellent gift for pretty much everyone. 5 stars, for sure !!

Requested this book because my children have been fascinated by birds and this was a great companion for our summer bird watching. We were able to use this to identify a rare bird we spotted at their grandparents.’ The spread out was easy to read and pretty and very informative! Would recommend to anyone interested in bird field guides!

A Field Guide to Backyard Birds of North America: A Visual Directory of the Most Popular Backyard Birds-Includes a 2 Year Logbook
Rob Hume
We have all watched birds as they land in our yards, perched on our bird feeders or as they take flight. We see their beauty in their colors, fragility and strength. During the winter I try to keep food out for the birds. Some I recognize like the Blue Jay as they run off most of the other birds so they can hog the bird seed. I also recognize the small finch with their yellow strip, the barn swallow that hops around, the beautiful red cardinals, the faithful robin and the lonely dove but there are many that I don’t recognize. With the help of A Field Guide to Backyard Birds of North America I plan to spend more time with my binoculars identifying the birds that visit my yard.
Backyard Birds is a small paperback to carry as you bird watch. The illustrations are beautiful, the section titled Bird Life was very interesting with information on courtship, songs, nests and feathers. There is a section to record the birds you spot. This is book would make a great gift for the bird lover in your family.

I became a little more obsessed with my backyard bjrds during the quarantine period of the pandemic and never looked back. Having digital ebook copy to check the illustrations AND the logbook is super helpful- a great resource. Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to preview #AFieldGuidetoBackyardBirdsofNorthAmerica

I read this guide enrapt and will purchase copies for myself and birdwatching friends. Beautiful illustrated, featuring more than 50+ popular North American birds and a handy two-year logbook for capturing your sightings. Perfect for beginners and accomplished birders.

The book is intended for novice bird watchers. I liked that it listed many different features and parts of different kinds of birds so you could get good understanding on what to watch for to tell the birds apart. There are pictures and text helping with that. Then there is a list of most common birds that can be easily found in North America. it is obviously not a comprehensive list, but it gives you a good start. Only the most basic information is provided about each bird, only a few words.
Then there is a lot of space for your own records. While it might sound convenient to have records right in the bird book, it is again geared for a novice who is not even sure they will want to watch birds two weeks from now.
I received a digital copy of the book from Netgalley

Nice quick guide to the birds you're always wondering what they are in your yard! I wanted to check this book out to figure out exactly that, what kind of bird is that, is that the breed I think it is!

The author begins the book with colorful images of common birds. He also discusses bird anatomy, including feathers, bills, and feet. The author describes the feeding habits of various types of birds, their nesting habits, as well as mating rituals. Various bird songs and their meanings add interesting facts to the information. I would recommend this book as an identification guide for those who are beginner to average birders.

A very brief field guide to some of the most common birds in North America. I found the pictures wonderful. The brief introduction to birds and how to begin your bird watching experience was short sweet and to the point. You weren’t bogged down with information as a novice. If you are an experienced bird watcher this book is probably not for you. It is a nice basic guide that includes a spot for you to write your own bird observations.

A Field Guide to Backyard Birds of North America is a beautiful resource and logbook for birdwatchers. There's a ton of information about birds, their distinguishing features and their behavior. The images here are beautiful. I love that there's a two-year logbook included in the back of this visual directory so you can keep track of what you see and when, what the bird eats, and any notes you might want to take about a particular bird sighting. Beautiful resource!

Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this eARC in exchange for my honest review on the book!
