I admit I am not a devotional person, but I loved the idea of waking up to something that points me to the Lord’s Word instead of my phone. ”Upon Waking” is wonderful. It has encouraged me to think deep on the Lord’s Word and set my day in a positive direction. Highly recommend!

This was a well written devotional, with each devotion being a little on the shorter side. Very approachable for newer believers or those that want to deepen their prayer life. I do wish that it went a little bit deeper, but I appreciate that it prompted more towards seeking depth in your relationship with God.

Jackie Hill Perry is a Christian author and speaker. Her newest book, "Upon Waking: 60 Daily Reflections to Discover Ourselves and the God We Were Made For", is a devotional that will lead its readers to understand that every day, we wake up and immediately begin worshipping something. The key is to determine what /who we are worshipping and whether it deserves our time and affection. I appreciated Perry's assertion that most devotionals are too shallow, while also encouraging us that "each devotional is a shovel. Once the cover is closed, it's your turn to dig. To open the Scriptures, using my observations of them as a resource, not a conclusion. "

Look NO FURTHER for your next devotional. I’m not normally a fan of devotionals because they’re notoriously fluffy. THIS IS NOT THOSE. Jackie Hill Perry brings it. It’s full of scripture and truth bombs. It will help you set your heart on Christ. This will be my recommended Devo for the foreseeable future. Excellent.

As she herself says in her intro, devotional readings are intended to be a short passage like an appetizer that precede the meat of reading the scripture. This book of sixty scripture-based reflections accomplishes that, though for me I had trouble just stopping at one day so ended up consuming this more like a book and reading multiple days at a time. However, I do appreciate that it is set up for 60 days’ worth, not a year, and think I’ll let this sit but may turn to it and use it on a daily basis again in the future. Jackie’s voice is recognizable but she sticks to talking about the scripture of the day and the Lord and does not draw in personal stories or illustrations. I did recognize one example from a teaching session that I heard her give so that day felt like it was recycled. I would have liked to see a clearer picture of the overall theme or structure and also miss having questions for personal reflection. But I would give this book as a gift or recommend to anyone who is looking for a short reading to start their day before getting pulled into news and notifications on the phone. I received a gifted copy of this book from B&H Publishing through NetGalley; I am leaving this review voluntarily as my honest opinion.

This was an incredible devotional and so unique. I’m so grateful for Jackie Hill Perry and her GIFT with words. This was solid biblically, convicting, encouraging, poetic, and very powerful.

Each of the 60 entries in this devotional is short enough to read quickly but deep enough to stay with you and bring you back to God’s Word to dive in even deeper.

This one is a devotional. 60 days. Each devotional is about 2 pages long with a base scripture that she writes around. Thankfully this devotional is not overly personal about her but is intended for the reader to truly reflect on God, His Word, and applying His Word.

I’m usually neutral regarding JHP, she’s not someone I’m usually interested in or that I pay a lot of attention to. So to see she was releasing a devotional slightly piqued my interest however since I know plenty of people who do keep up with her and what she teaches, I figured I could give her devotional a read and review. And I was not disappointed. This is more along the lines of what I’d like to see from a devotional, heavy on the Bible dependence less on the personal story and author’s life.

This devotional is a solid effort and definitely worth the time and money to invest in it.

Jackie Hill Perry get out of my head!!!! It's crazy how every single day was so perfectly aligned with what I was going through. It was applicable, enjoyable to read, so creative and full of depth. This author doesn't shy away from the hard-hitting messages the Saints need to hear. It's written beautifully and will cause you to think and connect with God upon waking. Can't wait for the next devotional!

Jackie Hill Perry does it again! A sixty day devotional that consistently reminds the reader of their identity found in Christ alone and the plan God has for the lives of His redeemed. In a world that promotes people to be themselves, these devotions remind us to be ourselves in Christ, our new selves.

Jackie Hill Perry begins her sixty day devotion, Upon Waking, with this shocking confession: "Devotions have never been my cup of tea"(1). She explains that this is because devotions sometimes are given a burden which they are not able to carry because they are not to be the main course, but the appetizer which grows the reader's desire for God and hunger for the Bible. Hill Perry provides the reader with honest reflections and Christ-centered wisdom to remind of the wonder that Christ has "cleansed and clarified not only what [we] are but who [we] are" (85).

This devotional covers a variety of topics which are common to the Christian life from idols, to needing compassion for ourselves, to reminders of who Christ is, to our personalities. Each devotion is introduced by a passage of Scripture and then 2-3 pages of examining the truths in that passage and considering the impact it has on the reader's life. This is where this devotional shines. Hill Perry provides clear reflections which captivate the reader with Christ and asks questions which stick with them throughout the day.

One which stuck with me was her devotion on God being with us. In it she asks: "How many temptations exist because we believe that in all our doing we are actually alone?" (80). She then moves on to remind that "God is with you. And by God I mean the Creator of heaven and earth. The Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. The supreme One. The King of glory. The Judge of all the earth. The immutable and transcendent God. The Lord of hosts. If that God is with us, we should be the most confident people on the planet" (80). The comfort of who the God who goes with me is was an encouragement through the day, and the question to not forget that He is with me was a challenge through the day. Hilly Perry has the gift of taking a truth that is well known and pondering it in such a way that the beauty of it is rediscovered.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is wanting a devotional which challenges them to honestly look at their faith and reflect on how it is impacting their life.

Every year I try to find the book I have enjoyed the most to gift at Christmas to those women closest to me. This year it's going to be Upon Waking. Jackie Hill Perry speaks truth in each day of devotions.
Jackie Hill Perry says at the beginning of the book that she doesn't like devotionals, yet she wrote one. Upon Waking has a verse with Perry's throughs of truth for the verse. These have been speaking to me, a woman who has done devotions for over 35 years. She doesn't add fluff to the devotion, but just what a person needs to start the day encouraged, or even conviction of change needed.
I encourage all Christian women to buy this book, regardless of stage in Christian walk.

Upon Waking is perfect for someone wanting to get back into the habit of reading God’s Word or maybe even read it for the first time. With JHP signature style of bringing you to God’s truth with grace and forthrightness, you will be greatly encouraged by going through this 60 day devotional.

I’ve been walking through this devo for two months now and it is hands down one of the best I’ve ever read. Deep, get you thinking and convicted truth. No watering it down but with a bit of her humor. Absolutely recommend if you’re looking to add to your daily time in the word.

I loved this book. Much like the author, I tend to find these “1-2 page, mini, morning” devotionals too fluffy. They miss the meat of scriptures. Jackie did an awesome job of digging deep into the heart of the Bible and the specific passages she studied. I was often convicted and found many of her daily writings popping into my head throughout the day. I’m grateful for her insights and her ability to point readers to God’s word. Definitely recommend for a shorter, daily read to kick off a quiet time or start your day. I will probably revisit it in the future.

In the introduction, Jackie Hill Perry confesses her general avoidance of devotionals, claiming that they often lack depth and focus on self. I nodded along as I read, having experienced the difference between “fluff” and “meat” in various devotionals. What I found interesting and helpful though, is that she doesn’t claim to have written some super deep devotional that fills in the gap that all others have missed. Instead, she reminds us that devotionals are meant to be the appetizer that gets us ready for the main course of God’s Word.
This sixty day devotional does a wonderful job of whetting the appetite for more of God. Each entry is short, beginning with a verse or two followed by some thoughts to help us ponder the context or meaning of the verse(s).
Aside from the introduction, I really appreciate two things about this devotional:
1.) I love the title. Upon Waking lends itself to literal use in a waking up routine. I may still be bleary-eyed, but making the Lord my first thought over Instagram or email will always be a good thing.
2.) The length. I am not always able to stay with a devotional for a whole year, so I like that this one is just 60 days. I imagine I’m not the only one who operates this way 🙂

What is your questions were the door by which you became vulnerable with God? Jackie does an incredible job guiding us into vulnerable days with God. This isn’t just a simple sweet thought for the day, it’s a promo for introspection throughout the day, leading us into deeper intimacy with Christ because of the countercultural views she presents. Besides My Utmost for His Highest, this is the best devotional I have ever read. It’s a launching point that has guided my days. Not just given me hope/encouragement, but perspective. Though it’s meant to be a 60 day devotional, I’ve been reading one every morning and every night the past few weeks. I will definitely be using this again right away.

Sadly, the ebook was completely unreadable. This publisher has done this before, and allowed poorly done epublications to come from their network.

This is a beautiful devotional book. I loved the intro that reminded the reader that these kinds of devotional books aren’t meant to be meat, but the appetizer that invites us to spend more time in the Word. Even so, I found these daily readings went deeper than many I’ve read in the past and brought up questions and things to think about.

Jackie Hill Perry accomplished what she wanted to with this devotional. As stated in the opening, a devotional is like an appetizer. This was well done. Each devotion is a great warm up to dive into the Word of God.

I've historically always passed on daily devotionals because of how short they are designed to be and how even the most well-written always leave me wanting more. I love that Jackie and I share this sentiment and that she wrote this devotional with the intention of diving deeper. Each day has enough to chew on, but not so much that you feel like you read an entire chapter. This was the second book of hers I've read and again I thoroughly enjoyed her poetic writing, despite not being a poetry fan myself! Very giftable, and I'd highly recommend getting yourself or a friend a copy!
