William Kensley can no longer ignore the fact that someone is intentionally trying to kill him. When the only man he trusts to tell him about his past is murdered, William flees Rosenleigh Manor. Uncovering his family’s history plunges his life into scandal costing him his wealth, status, and friends. His only solace comes in the form of Isabella Gresham, a woman now far above his rank. When Isabella is taken captive, William will risk everything to rescue her.

Garden of the Midnight is a slow-paced Regency tale that mostly sticks to the romance genre, despite a few sprinkled moments with suspense. Hannah Linder pens antagonists and villains that really make the blood boil. Unfortunately, the protagonists didn’t elicit equally strong emotions. They lacked romantic tension and never felt more than friends. In several instances, characterization was inconsistent (ex. the protagonists and heroine’s father).

While the gothic vibes didn’t shine through, Linder created vivid settings. She painted clear images that stuck in my mind. All in all, after reading her three novels, I’ve come to think I might not be the right reader for Linder’s style. I can see these novels appealing to Regency fans who like tales that are heavy on the family drama and light on the mystery.

Hannah Linder is an author that needs to be on everyone’s radar. Her writing is so beautiful – full of history, mystery, romance and so much more. Garden of the Midnights takes you on such a fun journey, and will have you guessing until the end. If you’re like me, you’ll not take a moment to stop turning the pages so you can figure it out!

I love the way Linder weaves faith into her stories as well. It’s just tastefully done and not overpowering. That combined with themes of forgiveness and family makes this book a winner! Historical fans will enjoy being back in Regency time with Linder’s latest release. I highly recommend not only reading this book, but putting her on your auto buy list!

Someone is trying to kill William Kensley, but why? He flees his childhood home in search for answers. He meets Isabella Greshem, who he believes to be his sister, and they develop a friendship when she saves his life. Then he realizes he is not who he believes he is. Now known to be unrelated, he and Isabella fall in love -- but his reduced station in life means he has nothing to offer her, and he won't impoverish her. Meanwhile, a man she has refused is willing to to get her at all costs.
I was excited at first to see a long-lost-sibling live story, and disappointed when it changed. Then I really enjoyed the romance. The circumstances that developed their love are unique and very sweet. Super swoony book -- except they went full Romeo and Juliet. They decided they needed each other, then couldn't be happy without each other, then hoped to just die together because they couldn't live apart. As Romeo and Juliet heartily proved, that is an unhealthy obsession. This would have been one of my favorites but for that melodrama. (At least William admitted her father loved her as much as he did.) Also, William accused God of taking several things from him that were actually taken from him by other people. He then declared he forgave God -- who never wronged him. I was glad to glad he chose to serve God. Loved the mysteries, action, romance (to a degree), and how she saved him. Loved her friendship with sweet Bridget.

This is the third novel I’ve read by Hannah Linder. I’ve enjoyed her writing, her stories, and her characters in each and every one. For Regency Romance lovers, this book is for you.

I enjoyed William’s storyline the best. William is such a sweet and caring young man, despite all the harshness that life brought him. Isabella is a free spirit, preferring going to the seashore and riding her horse instead of say, practicing the pianoforte. William’s and her friendship grows very naturally throughout the novel, which I genuinely appreciated.

Linder weaves in plotlines together expertly, not making it feel like too much is going on, but also keeping readers interested throughout the entire novel.

Overall, I would recommend this book, especially if you enjoy romance and Regency.

Massive thanks to the author and NetGalley for the advanced copy. These are my honest opinions.

Admittedly, this was my first Regency Romance novel. But it certainly will not be my last. Although it took a bit for me to get used to the writing style, mainly the dialogue, once I found a comfortable rhythm, I was captivated.

Linder's writing is both eloquent and captivating. From the beginning, the reader is immersed into the worlds of William and Isabella, both experiencing different walks of life, never meant to cross-paths, until they do (for the most unexpected reason, I might add). And from their first encounter to their last, readers are swept up in the mystery and romance and lure that is their tale.

Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, I was wrong. And I loved it. It's rare to have a novel that keeps you on your toes, but not so much from suspense, but out of enthusiasm and anticipation.

However, it did have a few drawbacks. SPOILER.

To go from believing you are siblings to falling in love is not the greatest start to a romance. Granted, it is a different time period, however, to find out that you have a brother and attempt to form a relationship with said brother, only for him to not be your brother, and you realize that you have romantic affections towards him just isn't really appealing, nor does it seem very appropriate. I will say though, what Linder did really well is establish that there was not much of a sibling bond to even foster so the argument could be made that they were virtual strangers that were getting know each other and eventually fell in love.

Because I am new to this author, I am not sure how much of a role faith plays into her stories. But from what was mentioned in this book, Linder could have done more to not make the Lord seems as an after-thought. Only when crisis occurred or depression hit did the characters really turn to Him, only for the outcomes be in their favor. Again, not sure what the author normally does in these instances, but it would have been great to not have their faiths be so surface level.

Nevertheless, besides those qualms, William Kensley is one of my favorite modern literary characters to date. Linder expertly crafted his story to make readers fall in love with him. To see his fierce determination and pride to find out who he was and where he came from, also be part of his downfalls, in some instances, was fascinating. To go from a wealthy gentleman to a stable hand to finally living alongside with his Isabella was incredible to read.

In conclusion, this was one of my favorite reads on 2023 and I hope to read more from this author. I would recommend to anyone that enjoys clean romances, historical fiction, and those would want to learn how to feel the seashore and do sunshine.

Hannah Linder’s latest novel is a fun, dramatic Gothic Regency romance historical fiction novel. Following William Kensley and Isabella Gresham across the United Kingdom, readers should expect twists, turns, dramatic reveals, and increasing stakes as the novel progresses. Isabella is a vivacious, brave heroine who loves her horse Camilla and detests her music lessons, but she braves the London season and the marriage market only to meet William Kensley of Rosenleigh, who has his own struggles with his aunt and cousin. Their paths collide again and again throughout the Season, but their growing feelings and relationship do not go unnoticed by Isabella’s father and a persistent suitor, Lord Livingstone, ultimately with dire consequences. Linder’s characters are well-written and well-developed, with complex backstories and character development over the course of the novel, and they drive the plot forward as the heart of the story. The settings also play a major role in the story as backdrops to the characters’ adventures and key motivations and players in their own right, and Linder’s generous use of detail adds to the book’s atmosphere. Readers are sure to enjoy this Gothic Regency romance, the adventures of Isabella and William, and the challenges they face along the way in Garden of the Midnights.

Secrets, scandal, forbidden romance, and all the Gothic vibes!

This story really reminded me a lot of Jane Eyre and other classics, and I really loved that!!

The plot twists had me on the edge of my seat 99% of the time, and the angst just about killed me 😭
This is why I stay away from forbidden romance 😂 But Miss Linder is definitely a very talented writer who knows just how to torture her readers!

This story was everything I could have hoped it would be. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

This was a page turning wild ride! So much goes on for William and Isabella with all the twists and turns. Beautiful regency era feeling, it is written well for the time. I felt like I was there experiencing the smells, sights, and sounds. Lots of amazing danger, plenty of mysterious intrigue, and quite a bit of the social prejudice of that time. These two needed to grow up and figure out what love means, all the while fighting for their lives! If you love danger, regency romance, and action then you will love this story. Thanks to Barbour for this story. No review required.

Was okay but hard to keep my attention throughout.
Decent enough Christian historical fiction.
Gothic elements were well done.

2.5 Stars

GARDEN OF THE MIDNIGHTS is a story about a man in danger who is seeking the truth of his birth and a girl who doesn't believe in love and the two men who try to change her mind. There's definitely a Gothic feel throughout as well as an underlying tone of suspense and danger. There is also a bit of an inspirational element with the focus becoming fully on the romance the second half of the book to the climatic end. Readers who enjoyed this author's previous works and inspirational Gothic stories strong on the romance and violence may enjoy this one.

This is the second book I've read from this author, and the writing and development has vastly improved since Linder's debut. I felt like everything was better presented, with very likable characters who had their own arcs to develop as the story progressed. I enjoyed seeing them come into their own even though I liked them from the beginning. I also really liked the overall feel of the plot with the Gothic elements and consistent suspense. There were a few twists and turns, although predictable ones. The inspirational elements were light and felt mostly woven through the story well. The romance intensified the last half of the book along with the danger to a very climatic ending and then to a sweet epilogue.

I did have a few issues with this book. There is a plot point involving the main characters that honestly rubbed me wrong. I got what the author was trying to do, but it just made aspects of the romance feel off to me. The romance was also sickly sweet and too intense for my taste in the second half of the book. I honestly enjoyed the first half of the story quite a lot, but the second half not nearly as much. I felt like there were several things that occurred that were unrealistic, some of which from the beginning of the story. Then the climatic ending felt over-the-top and a lot more repulsively violent than I was expecting and would expect from a book in this genre. It pretty much turned me off the book, especially as it didn't seem plausible and felt like it was included for shock value. It honestly made for a very unpleasant read.

In the end, was it what I wished for? There definitely is potential here and the author is improving with each new release. The characters were likable and the Gothic setting was enjoyable. This book for me was half great and half terrible. The writing was good, but there were a lot of aspects that didn't work for me. However, I think for others, it may be more their cup of tea.

Content & Trigger Warnings: Some innuendo and suggestive references, some fairly disturbing abusive violence.

The absolutely gorgeous cover of Garden of the Midnights is an invitation to a mesmerizing story filled with wonderful characters, delicious romance, and an inspiring message of faith. Isabella and William's friendship is a pleasure but it's their growing romance that grabbed my heart and emotions. They should be, NO, they must be together, but their relationship seems doomed! Can they overcome the seemingly insurmountable obstacles?

This book fits into so many genres! There's intrigue, romance, a historical Regency setting, and gothic vibes for those who love Gothic literature! Author Hannah Linder shares a beautifully written story that's left me yearning for her next book! I recommend Garden of the Midnights to all who enjoy historical Christian romance!

GARDEN OF THE MIDNIGHTS has everything you would expect in a Regency Era novel - secrets, misunderstandings, forbidden romance, danger, and the threat of dashed dreams. And of course, there are those parties during the London "season" and the expectation that the heroine will follow her father's wishes and marry according to station. Yet somehow, author Hannah Linder makes the stories of William Kingsley and Isabella Gresham read as fresh and authentic. The seaside setting of Isabella's family estate reminded me of the entertaining PBS's series Sandition. I received a copy of GARDEN OF THE MIDNIGHTS from Netgalley; all opinions are mine.

Garden of the Midnights by Hannah Linder is a perfect inspirational historical romance if you love gothic romances that have you staying up way too late in order to see what is going to happen on the next page or even the next chapter.
When an English gentleman William Kensley realizes that something dangerous and strange is happening at Rosenleigh he seeks help from the only man that he can trust until he is found murdered.
After secrets and scandal unfold William finds himself left penniless without any means of help except for the love of Isabella Gresham, but that too becomes threatened when Isabella's life is put in danger when she is held captive.
Even if William is able to save Isabella will their love for each other have to be forsaken or will they finally get their HEA?
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

As with all author Linder books, when I step into her worlds, I never know quite where the journey will be taking me. This one, my favorite yet, is what I would call an epic romance. One I found myself engulfed in, and like the characters looking over my shoulder a few times to make sure I was not being watched. This is an atmospheric read full of mystery and secrets, unfathomable love all with a gothic flavor.

The prologue starts off years before with a foreboding that will affect our beloved characters for years to come. Englishman William Kensley has really never been loved or wanted. Having been told of his mother's passing during his birth and that his father died after, he was raised by an aunt who cared nothing for him. Not only that, but there are glimpses of her and his cousin's cruelty towards him growing up. However, he is now the heir of Rosenleigh Manor, but that has not stopped the vicious attacks nor the accidents that surround him. Dangerous accidents that could have killed him. He believes someone is attempting to kill him until one fateful night he is sure of it. He leaves his beloved home, not from cowardice but for answers. Especially answers where his father is concerned.

Isabella Gresham is enduring her London season believing that there is no such thing as true love. She will marry for compatibility when she finds it. There is a man, a mysterious and handsome man who has intrigued her. But he makes her feel a bit off as well. She has certainly attracted his attention, and he is not one to let her go. Not only that but she befriends the most affable and genuine William. He is hiding something from her, and he has intrigued her curiosity.

This story was hard to put down as all the lies eventually unravel and the truth breaks through.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

This is a book that echoed in my mind long after I finished the last page.

With many of the books that I read, they begin to fade after I mark them as “read”, but this one just kept lingering. Powerful seems too mild a word to describe it.

William and Isabella were characters who came to life and lived and breathed in my mind. After reading just a couple chapters, I was so worried for William that I couldn’t focus on any of my work.

Their meeting was absolutely delightful. All the mysteries of their past mixed with the danger of the present kept me on the edge of my seat. Every time that I felt I was startling unravel the answers to the questions, another truth would bomb, sending me reeling right along with William.

And I have to mention that Hannah has such a way of writing. She used so many unique, but perfect words that the setting and the story took on a life of its own. The climax especially was a scene I’ll never forget.

There was so much that I loved about this book, but I do need to mention two things that detracted from the story. One, there was a side character who used some British profanities (which, since I’m American, I didn’t even realize it was a profanity until I looked it up later). And two, there was a moment at the end when the main character decided to “forgive God.” The scene came so close to giving the book a sweeping conclusion, but that gave it a “not quite” feel. God doesn’t need to be forgiven. I believe the intention behind the scene was of the main character releasing his bitterness toward God, which was a good theme. It just had odd wording.

That said, this is a story that will probably rank toward the top of my favorite books I’ve read this year.

Some sacrifice everything for love. Others sacrifice love for everything else.

Hannah Linder has to be one of my top favorite historical authors. This is her third published book and they just keep getting better and better in my opinion! She has such a lyrical poetic writer’s voice that draws me in every time & sweeps me into her world of fiction.

Garden of the Midnights is a doozy of a read! I did not expect to be so affected or so deeply pulled into the lives of William Kensley & Isabella Gresham as I was. My real world melted the moment they met. With each twist & turn of the plot, I could not put the book down if I tried. I HAD to know what happened next, almost to the point of desperation! Okay maybe that’s an exaggeration, but that’s just how lost I was in the story. My heart was invested in the journey that Linder put William & Isabella on. I wanted to rail against the injustice of social standing, prejudices & severe gaps in class distinction of the time period. But that’s what made this story so good, the angst a reader goes through as the scenes play out. It’s what connected my heart, invested my emotions and made me enjoy the ride even more.

We may scorn the poor and lift our noses at them and blame their helplessness on dastardly sins. But the truth is they are no worse and no better than we ourselves. They are simply less fortunate.

Love is hard won in this story and many heart wrenching decisions played out on the pages. However, a stunning conclusion awaits those who endure to the end! A definite must read in my book for those who enjoy historical fiction with Gothic tones, forbidden romance, a story taut with danger and ends in a breathtaking conclusion. You don't want to miss this one!

What a beautiful to cover! This was my first Hannah Linder book and what a book! Not disappointed at all! The atmosphere was mesmerizing and the writing beautiful. William and Hannah were both so likable. I'm glad I read this book and followed their complex journey. I was eagerly awaiting to see if they would get their happily ever after. Not going to say if they did...LOL. The friendship, romance, and adventures were a big part of this book but the author added a few intriguing mysteries along the way. I will definitely read another book by this author.

Regency romance, filled with intrigue, and tension.

An engaging novel that pulled me in with a mysterious plot, likable characters, and great tension throughout. I liked the gothic vibes, as well as the Austen-esque plot. I liked how Isabella and William's friendship grows over the course of the book, as they find a true friend and confidante in each other.

A well written read, that brings the setting to life in a tangible way. I also liked the themes of forgiveness woven into the fiber of the plot.

Overall, this was a highly enjoyable read with just the right amount of suspense to keep me on my toes with heroes that I could cheer for throughout!
