This was a fun read, a rather different and interesting retelling of Jane Eyre. I liked the writing quite a bit and would definitely read more by Fisher.

In this bewitching retelling of Jane Eyre, healer Jane must leave the safety of the Lowood School to remove the shadow that's fallen over Thornfield Hall, while also unraveling the mystery of her parentage and sorting out her feelings for the stubborn Mr. Rochester.
A fun, fantastical twist on a classic that will delight fans of the original as well as those who have never heard of Charlotte Brontë.

Salt and Broom……what a way to make me fall in love with Jane Eyre all over again… and in a completely different way. This re-telling is quick witted and keeps you on your toes throughout. Definitely a must read!

Salt & Broom is a loose and witchy retelling of Jane Eyre.

Jane Aire has lived her whole life at a girls school and now a teacher at the same school. When one day she is sent to Mr Edward Rochester as he was in need of a witch.

This was a bit hard to read at first as the lengthy paragraphs seemed to just go on. But I did eventually enjoy the mystery and I wanted to continue reading at the end of each chapter.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for an advanced e-copy of this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Jane Eyre witchy retelling… Um, yes. I will say, I went into this book with very high expectations (as Jane Eyre is my favorite book of all of time) and was worried the book would be a quirky, awkward re-telling that was flying on the coat tails of the original classic. However, I was happily mistaken.
If you have read Jane Eyre, you may know somewhat of the plot of this book. However, this book blew me away with how different, yet the same it was to the original Bronte story. If you have not read Jane Eyre, you must know that it is about an orphan, Jane, who grew up at Lowood School. She then ventures off on an assignment at Thornfield Hall and meets the older, dashingly handsome, bruting Mr. Rochester *swooooon*. This version of the story portrays Jane as a witch who is summoned to Thornfield to help with a curse that the workers believe is upon the estate. Jane soon finds out she has taken on more than she can handle; in her status as a witch, and her status as someone in love.
“I noticed a change as soon as we passed through the gates. I could feel the shadow Mr. Rochester had mentioned and a shiver ran through me.”
This book was everything and more that I was hoping for. Spookiness, beautiful prose, and, honestly, a pretty much completely different story than Jane Eyre – apart from the characters and setting. What a great way to start the new year. BRB, going to order a physical copy right this moment.

Would I Recommend: Yes. Yes. Absolutely, yes.

I really enjoyed this. It did take some time to pull me in. There was a lot of setting up so to speak but once the foundation was built, I was lost in a beautiful retelling. <3

Enjoyable mash up of Witcher’s, historical romance and re-telling of Jane Eyre. Well written and atmospheric and fun read. Thank you to #netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

Slow to get into but once the characters and setting are established this novel really settles into the plot and witchy vibes. A compelling Jane Eyre retelling.

I didn't know what to expect, so found this a slow starter. Took me a while to finish, as I kept setting it down and forgetting about it for days at a time. After finishing the book I read the author's notes and saw this is a retelling of Jane Eyre, which made everything click. I'm embarrassed that I never put Miss Aire together with Jane in my head. I never read the classic romances (Bronte, Austen, et al) so the cadence wasn't familiar to me. I wish I'd read a jacket or synopsis before reading, it may have peaked my interest more than going in blind.

The MFC doesn't know her own strength and comes into her own as soon as she leaves her home environment where expectations hold her back. The brooding and stern leading man who sees her value and encourages her growth. The writing is great, as I believe a good story paints a mind picture and I saw the cottage, the gardens, the house clearly as I was reading.
A great and surprising resolution really brought the magic to the forefront, and who doesn't love a Happy Ever After? Overall I'm glad I finished.

A Jane Eyre retelling that feels genuine to the source material, though cozier and with the added element of magic. Really enjoyable book.

Series Info/Source: This is a stand alone book. I got a copy of this on ebook through NetGalley.

Thoughts: This is a re-imagining of Jane Eyre with witches and malevolent ghosts. I enjoyed this well enough. Jane is an orphan who teaches at a girls' school known for teaching witchcraft. She gets a request to travel out to Thornfield Hall to deal with a problem there.

For the most part I enjoyed Jane and Edward's characters; although I did wish a number of times that Jane had a bit more backbone. She just gave up on things fairly easily. The romance between her and Edward was decently done but not absolutely engrossing.

The mystery around the threat at Thornfield Hall was decent as well. There were some surprises and it kept me well enough engaged. The magical witchcraft throughout seemed a bit awkward; whenever it entered the story it felt like the story stuttered a bit and just didn't flow well. It would have been nice to have magic more seamlessly woven into the world.

The writing here is easy to read and contains a lot of wonderful descriptions. This was a fairly quick read that I enjoyed but didn't love.

My Summary (4/5): Overall I enjoyed this story but didn't love it. I don't think it was quite as good as the original "Jane Eyre" book. The addition of magic and witchcraft was an intriguing idea but wasn't woven into the world very well. Jane and Edward were okay and their romance was sweet, but they never will pulled me into the story. This was a decent read and I would recommend if you enjoy retellings of classic literature that have magic in them. It didn't really make me want to pick up future books by Fisher though.

This was a fun read. I think it could fit into the "cozy fantasy" group that seems to be pretty popular right now. I never read Jane Eyre but was still able to enjoy the story. The writing was beautiful. I will look into other works by this author.

One of the best “Jane Eyre” retellings I’ve read, and I’ve read quite a few. It paid homage to the spirit and story of the original but retold it in a new, rejuvenating way.
The witchcraft aspects were told with love and appreciation, and were clearly carefully studied. I’d recommend this to anyone who is looking for a fun witchy cottagecore story with spooky elements. You don’t need to be familiar with “Jane Eyre” to enjoy it, but it’s definitely a bonus if you are.

This was a quick, witchy read. I enjoyed the mystery behind the main storyline, but I was a bit disappointed by the love story. Definitely seemed rush and not entirely flushed out, but it definitely had its moments. Overall, I think it could have been longer and delved more into the romance and the storyline to really get the reader immersed.

Would recommend for anyone needing a fast read!

Salt and Broom is a creative, enchanted retelling of 'Jane Eyre'...with a healthy dose of fairies and ghosts, of course. Not having read the original, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect - something Pride and prejudice-esque with witches, perhaps? Witches, indeed.

This is my first book by Sharon Lynn Fisher, and I'm going to have to check out her other works because I adored Salt and Broom. I loved everything about this book - the atmosphere and writing, the characters are entertaining, the world feels cozy and lived-in. I was invested in Thornfield's haunting and Jane's development from the beginning.

In regards to the characters: Jane and Mr. Rochester are the sweetest couple. Their harmless banter comes off as real; Jane is an absolute delight, Edward moody, yet delightfully charming.

If you're looking for an imaginative retelling of a classic regency romance that has magic and mystery at its heart, you'll like this one

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Sharon Lynn Fisher for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for Salt and Broom. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. Jane Eyre is one of my favorite classic novels. I’ve read a few adaptations. I was really excited to read one with her being a witch because in the original novel, Rochester always thought she was a witch. I thought the plot was so good! I loved the writing. It was atmospheric. I was obsessed with Jane and Rochester. I thought the book was true to the original novel while also being fun and spooky. I already had an idea of what would happen, but I loved the differences. It was perfect to me. I definitely want to check out other books by this author.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books about witches and Jane Eyre!

I haven't read Jane Eyre, so this being a retelling is lost on me and I can only rate it based on the novel itself. I loved this. It was such a cozy, cottagecore, historical fantasy that put me in mind of Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries. I loved Jane so much, I loved the writing style, the imagery, the cat. It was just so warm and nice to read, which just enough of a mystery and danger to keep me hooked.

Anytime a book is considered a spin off of a classic such as Jane Eyre my mind goes one of two places; it’s either too similar or too different for it to be enjoyable OR it’s perfectly fused with the original storyline. I’m very, very pleased to report that this book is the latter. Truly this is probably one of the best renditions I’ve had the pleasure of reading. It was close enough to the original that I felt it kept the charm, but unique enough that it truly was a new story at its core. Speaking of the story itself, it felt like every chapter there was a new twist that made me want to keep reading to watch all the pieces come together. I appreciated that they were easy enough to follow and despite the frequency, it didn’t feel staged or rushed. The imagery was absolutely stunning, I truly felt transported to be in the midst of the magic. I very much enjoyed the sprinkling in of witchcraft and folklore details, it was informative but not in the way that it felt like a scholarly book or something of that nature. Instead it added an entirely new level to the story and kept me captivated till the very end. It almost felt like I needed to start a journal of my own! All in all, this book held its own as being entirely unique yet with the personalities that we know and love, with some even new additions. I highly recommend giving yourself a change to escape with this book, you won’t regret it!
