Ok I loved Into the Mist and was so excited to see the second installment (closure?) of the series on NetGalley.

This book picks up right where the first leaves off as our group is recovering from Al's attack, Ford's death and still trudging forward with creating a home in this new world.

I love found family and the idea of organizing something from chaos so this series deeply appeals to me on that front. The fact that it also has very strong feminist storylines is also healing to my soul. I, for one, deeply appreciated how they handled what happens to Gemma.

The connection the groups creates with the earth itself is magical. Fantastic series.

Thank you to P.C. Cast, Dreamscape Media, and NetGalley for this advance listening copy in exchange for my honest review.

I decided to give this author another chance after reading their House of Night series. The premise of the book sounded really interesting. I didn’t realize it was the second book in the series, however I don’t think that I really missed anything by not reading the first book. Ultimately, I just don’t think this author’s writing style is for me.

Rating for the book: 2 stars

The narrator did a good job with their narration of this story.

Rating for audiobook: 4 stars

I enjoyed the first book in this series and was happy to return to the world and characters, but I had mixed feelings about Out of the Dawn. While set in a post apocalyptic world, this book felt more focused on the fantasy and magical elements versus the dystopian vibe of the first book. The writing style had several things I don’t love - an overuse of names/nicknames in dialog, repetitive words/phrases, and more tell than show. It is a really interesting world and concept, but the slower pace and writing style didn’t fully work for me. I enjoyed how it wrapped up and wish that had been expanded upon instead of some of the unnecessary side plots. While things do come to a satisfying conclusion, the ending also was open enough for an additional book in the series.

I split time between the audio and physical book and enjoyed both formats. The narrator on the audiobook is Lorelei King and she does a fantastic job!

Thanks to Crooked Lane Books and Dreamscape Media for the ARC/ALC.

This was my first P.C. Cast book. I kind of knew it wouldn't be my thing but I thought I'd give it a try. It is definitely not my thing BUT I can see why Cast is popular. It was very easy to consume and addictive like a bad soap opera. I think fans are going to be pretty happy to consume this one. Lots of woman power, crazy fantasy elements and drama.

Lorelei King is a fantastic narrator! She has such a calming voice.

This book is a magnificent dytsopia! The suspense is nail biting. The characters, which were developed in Into The Mist, are evolving in this one, and it's great to see them take root in their roles in this world.

Each description is so well done that I could totally imagine myself with them.

If you like dystopian stories with a nice fantasy twist then this one is for you!

Many thanks to Netgalley for the advance copy of this book.

I love post apo stories. It's fascinating how humanity can potentially handle the severity of tragedy. But when you tell me that the reason behind the end of the world is some bomb which creates some mysterious green mist in aftermath, mist that kills men and give special powers to women - you don't have to ask me twice. I dive blindly into deep water with no safety cushion to fall on.

I wish somewhere in the description would be mentioned that this title is the second book in a series. As I didn't know that, I listen to it as standalone and nothing spoiled my experience. Other things did. But before that, I'd love to focus on the diversity of the characters. Not about their background or community they belonged before bombing, but with their personality. Each character distinct style of being makes the read believable. Each character has their own view on what survival should look like and for the sake of consensus they work together perfectly. Once a chain reaction of life altering events is triggered, there is no return. And that's what happens here. The characters must face their grief, their potential enemies, and simple people who for the name of survival won't stop from showing the worst version of themselves. Two things that got me the most were the pop-cultural references who threw me each time out of the story as forced and unnecessary. And the second thing was focus threatening description of mundane life. It wasn't about its amount but the quality. Also, I wish more diversity would be incorporated. I'd love to know more about the world, what happened en everything. I know that this is from the small point of view, yet all the same nothing seem much different except those superpowers. Overall, I had fun with this audio because the lector made it simple to follow with different voices that let me know who is who. Yet there were things I felt were missing.

DNF at 35%. Slow pace and there’s nothing going on minus setting up camp. The story isn’t pulling me in the way the first one did. I can’t keep listening for another 7.5 hours.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for an advanced copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

THIS BOOK! As a huge fan of Into the Mist I just couldn't wait to get my hands on Out of the Dawn. I am so happy to have snagged an advanced copy! I loved revisiting these characters and seeing how much they have grown and come into themselves. Karen, in particular surprised me so much with her growth and I loved experiencing her point of views. I really appreciated the themes surrounding this book and the delicate but powerful connection with nature our characters had was stunning. With the broadening of this story and some of the fantastical things happening I am very impressed with the amount of tension and edge of your seat dread this was able to hold for me. Towards the end I was worried that there just weren't enough pages left to wrap up the story in a concise way, but I loved how this ended!

Let me be clear, I really, really, really enjoyed the first book in this series. I was super excited to pick this one up. Maybe it was the audiobook format, but this time, I could really hear the clunkiness of the dialog that I didn't notice before. This one also steers a lot more towards mysticism, which is fine, but just didn't click with the setting for me. The pacing was also wonky. You spend the first 75% of the book watching the group set up their homestead, which again, isn't a bad thing. If the whole book was that, without the threat of the villains, I probably would have been fine. But the threat was there, so you are left waiting for the shoe to drop, and it falls really slowly.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Long time fan of the House of Night series here. I was super excited to get approved for this audiobook.
Loved it!!! I did not listen to the first one in the series so now I will need to do that.
But as always great job by these writers and also great narration!

TW: Rape, racial slurs, political undertones

This was the follow up to Into The Mist…following a crew of bada$$ female MCs.

While this book is a bit political I didn’t mind it because it’s subtle while still getting the point across and adding something to the story. So well done.

The characters further develop their new skills in this book and become stronger and more united. In this book not all of the men are bad or dead.

This is a fun story if survival in a post apocalyptic world. I’m a sucker for a good dystopian book. This book was perfectly atmospheric and was not wasteful with words.

I felt fully immersed while listening to this excellent audiobook. So kudos to the audiobook narrator.

Into the Mist and Out of the Dawn would make a cool mini series if there’s ever consideration for a screen adaptation

Thank you NetGalley, Dreamscape Media and the author, PC Cast for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I was initially quite disappointed to not notice this had been on NetGalley in eBook before it had been archived as I thoroughly enjoyed the first book ‘into the mist’. I first came across PC Cast years ago when reading the House of Night series and so I’d been drawn to the previous book and this sequel was just as good. All the original ‘core four’ return with both the characters and the plot developing further still. There’s much less moving around than the last story which makes sense since they are colonising in this book however it still isn’t too boring and there are some good twists and turns amplifying the premise of the plot further. It ends on a good finished note - although there’s easy option for further books to continue to unpick and evolve the plot further.

The narrator is perfect for the story too. I thoroughly enjoyed this and sped through the audiobook.

While I enjoyed this I wanted a little bit more from it. It picked up right where Into the Mist left off and helped to further the characters which I enjoyed. What I found missing was the explanation of what happened? What is the mist? Why does it kill men and give women power? The ending was a little too tidy for me as well. While I do enjoy a happy ending a dystopian read needs a little chaos.

I received an arc for my honest review. I wanted to love the book more than I did. I love this dystopia, and that the green mist gives certain women power due to being exposed to the mist, but the story over all seem anticlimactic. The whole build up of multiple crew building up their own empires of have a 2 second battle at the end killed it for me. All in all still worth the read, and would still recommend.

This book needs a Trigger Warning for Rape.

In one chapter characters are happily dancing around the veggie garden and then suddenly there is a detailed description of rape. I can kinda see that author was trying to show characters were creating a different world. But she did that with the ending so this felt like a needless addition.

Up until this I was really enjoying the story. Especially the how to build a home after the Apocalypse.

I received a complimentary audiobook copy of OUT OF THE DAWN by P.C. Cast. Thank you to Dreamscape Media and Netgalley!

OUT OF THE DAWN is the second book in the author’s Into the Mist series. The first book began with a group of teachers leaving a convention in Oregon. When they make a stop, the scenic view becomes a horror as strange things fall out of the sky, decimating the cities they see in the distance and creating a strange green mist. Suddenly people around them are dying horrifying deaths in the mist with only the women surviving, though not without significant changes to their abilities.

Throughout the first book, we’ve learned more about the world and about the changes that women have undergone. Together they must form a new way of life and a new normal. This second installment in the series picks up just a couple of days after the surprising end to book one.

It is hard to say a lot about the plot of this book without some major spoilers for book one. The cast of characters grew throughout the first book as they original group of teachers merged and separated with other survivors. The impacts of the mist continue to grow and take some turns that I didn’t expect.

I do really enjoy seeing how characters have changed over the course of the two books and how their perception of the world changes. There are some significant trigger warnings around the way some of the women are mistreated both by the surviving men and sometimes each other, so that is something to check out if a concern.

There were a few places in the book that I felt could have been edited down as conversations felt a little repetitive, but overall I really enjoyed continuing on with this story and will be happy to pick up more in the future!

I officially need a support group for this series. PC does an excellent job at keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book. Lorelie King also does a great job at bringing this book to life. I truly felt like I was plopped into the story, not as an onlooker, but actually a part of the world right there with the characters. I'm curious to see how book 3 will unfold and what new adventures the core 4 will go through.

One of my favorite parts is the continued character growth. While still exploring religion it is nice to see that folks of different backgrounds can out aside their differences to enhance and better the current society while not giving up who they truly are while flourishing in their self journey.

“Out of the Dawn” is the perfect sequel to “Into the Mist” by P.C. Cast!

It is suspenseful, filled with further character development, and just plain entertaining throughout.

I love P.C. Cast books and was so excited to be selected to enjoy this ALC. I can’t wait for the next book!

This is the sequel to Out of the Mist. It is a great follow up to the previous book.

This is the first audiobook I’ve read in awhile and it was a great one to start with since it was so good. It has gotten me out of my funk!
