We really liked reading this book. Maggie Lou is such a fun spunky character. I loved the message of hard work pays off!

Maggie Lou is an incredibly rambunctious girl that many can relate to. The first short story I highly enjoyed but really missed the boxing component that is highlighted in the description in the later stories. While this book was entertaining and highlighted the Native American culture, the level is a little low for my library.

I’m always on the lookout for a novel promoting strong girls and Maggie Lou, Firefox fits the bill. Maggie sticks to her ideas and doesn’t let much phase her - which is saying a lot since there is a lot of teasing in this novel from family and friends. It is mostly playful but as a parent I tired of the name calling (“brat,” “losers,” etc.) pretty quickly, no matter how tame it seemed. The book reads like 3 small stories within one which I think is great for readers will shorter attention spans. My kid didn’t connect to Maggie Lou’s story but I definitely think that other kids would. I appreciate placing a female in a traditionally male-dominated sport and I think the author really highlights the strength of females.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy. All opinions are my own.
