I forgot that I dislike cozy mysteries but unfortunately this book reminded me. I will be DNFing at around 10%. I’m sad because the premise is really fun and I think the main character is funny but I can already tell that the pacing is horribly slow. I was a little bored and can’t imagine reading 90% more of this content. Thanks anyway for the ARC, and I do applaud the originality of the book’s concept! I think this is more of a “it’s not you it’s me” situation.

Definitely enjoyable! Witty and fun! When Alice and Joe uproot themselves from London and move to a small rural town it's hard to make friends. Alice tries to befriend some of the women in her prenatal class, but it isn't until there is a murder that they bond in their true crime love.

A very fun read, a well thought out mystery. The only thing is that I think I felt that I may have liked her friends a bit more as Alice is just a little too passive for me. BUT the friends feature quite a bit and the mystery is a good one. I would definitely pick up the next book post childbirth!

This was so much fun! It had elements of cozy, funny, and quirky. Alice is pregnant and needs to solve a murder mystery in order to ensure the locals in her new town don't assume she is the killer. The dog, Helen, tags along with Alice as a sidekick of sorts - I loved this element, because who doesn't love a mischievous animal. Later on, other women join in the sleuthing, and it was just funny and entertaining all around!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this Arc in exchange for an honest review.

I read a lot of mystery and did not see the ending coming.

Thank you,NetGalley for this ARC. I'm a big fan of cozy mysteries so I was excited to see what I thought was a new cozy mysteries series. Well, I would really call this a cozy mystery but I still enjoyed it. The charcters and mystery kept my interest. It was a quick but enjoyable read.

Highly pregnant women acting as amateur detectives to solve a murder makes for an amusing premise, and Ms. Ailes delivers the humor quite effectively. The story is full of amusing characters (human and canine) and incidents, made funnier by misjudgments and incorrect assumptions. There is plenty of mystery and intrigue with the secrets hidden by current and former members of the nearby commune, as well as unexpected connections between newer residents of the village and longtime residents of the village or commune.

I love the premise of soon-to-be-mothers becoming detectives, and this light, escapist fiction is perfect for fans of the Finlay Donovan series. Recommended reading for a rainy afternoon with a cozy blanket. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

The Expectant Detectives by Kat Ailes is a brilliantly clever and darkly humorous tale. This book is archly funny and I highly recommended it.
