This was my first Phoebe and her Unicorn book, but it will not be my last! I was not entirely sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. I had, for some reason, assumed these books were one continuous story. However, it is a collection of comics - some stories last only a page and some lasting for several pages. I enjoyed this format and I think the collection had a nice blend of light-hearted and silly comics with some others delving into deeper subjects. The art style is, of course, adorable. And this book is jam-packed with fantastic new vocabulary words- with a glossary at the end to help with pronunciation and definitions. Highly recommend to graphic novel readers that enjoy collected comics, unicorns, and overall silliness.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for free access to this e-ARC in return for my honest opinion.

Phoebe and Marigold return in the latest installment of the Phoebe and Her Unicorn series. The book continues their adventures with the return of Todd (the candy breathing dragon) and is delightful for both children and adults. Each book in this series is a delight!

Books by Dana Simpson are reliable winners, and this one is delightful. Despite having almost 20 books in the series, Simpson seems to never run out of new material.

“Unicorn For a Day” by Dana Simpson is a fun graphic novel about an ordinary girl named Phoebe and her unicorn bestie. I read this with my nine-year-old daughter, who enjoys these books. We laughed the whole way through. It reads like a collection of comics, with some longer story arcs playing out over multiple pages. The main story arc revolves around Phoebe and Marigold switching places, a la Freaky Friday. While some of the dry wit, references, and themes may go over the heads of younger readers, it is still fun to read. I appreciate the glossary in the back to help young readers learn new vocabulary. This series reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes and is something I would have read when I was younger. According to my daughter, this is the best one yet! Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book.

Another part of a beloved graphic novel series. Cute and short comics to engage even earlier readers, funny moments and wonderful graphics. Definitely adding this one to our library collection!

I just adore this series!
Phoebe and Marigold are up to their usual shenanigans and it’s as delightful as ever. Marigold has perfected a spell allowing she and Phoebe to switch bodies for the day. What could possibly go wrong?

Because my 10yo daughter is a HUGE Phoebe and Her Unicorn fan, I grabbed this read-now copy and handed it to her, with the promise of a review. Here is her review. :-)

"As usual, the new Pheobe and Her Unicorn is funny, addicting, and nonstop fun. With new magical creatures, a day as a unicorn, and even a newfound fear of shoes, Unicorn for a Day is sure to entertain. If you like comedy, fantasy, and graphic novels, Unicorn for a Day is the book for you."

She gives it 5 glowing stars!

Another fun collection of comics about Phoebe and her unicorn Marigold. There are some continuing plot strands, with a nod to "Freaky Friday" when the two change roles, and of course, ongoing characters from all of the previous books. Nothing that necessarily makes this title stand out for others in the series, which means fans will be very excited to read it.

I fervently wish the Phoebe and Her Unicorn series had been around when I was a child. Although I know I would have been a dedicated, ardent reader, there is nothing stopping me from loving the heck out of these books as an almost-forty-year-old woman. Eighteen books in and I am still loving them. Truly delightful.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this in advance of the release.

Yet another entertaining read in the Phoebe and Her Unicorn series. I have yet to be truly disappointed by any of these collections. This was consistent with all of the previous books, in that the artwork is really nice and the characters are entertaining. For anyone who has read and enjoyed the previous books or even a sampling of them, this will meet expectations and then some. Phoebe is her usual self, and we get a few appearances by Montana who I adore. And Marigold is contraction free and such a unicorn. She has such a voice, and I love her to bits.

Some chuckles, and more importantly, some lessons learned within the relationships of Phoebe and those around her. Although my kids are older, my twenty year old daughter still enjoys reading these and asks me to buy them for her the minute she knows a new one has been released.

I will say that, as with all of these books, there is a tendency for some of the collected volumes to have more of a story throughout and those are the ones that I like the best. This was not one of them. There were a few spots where the comics (stories) spanned a few pages, but there was no real link from one to the next. That's what kept it from being a 5 star for me.

Unicorn for a Day is a collection of comics following Phoebe and her unicorn, Marigold. Phoebe is contemplative and endearing, and Marigold is flighty and cosmopolitan. Their dynamic is fun and I enjoyed reading this with my 6 year-old.

My daughter has enjoyed many other Phoebe and Her Unicorn books, and while some of the themes went over her head, she still had plenty of giggles. This is a great series for elementary-aged kids because it's wholesome, captivating, and just plain fun. Marigold has a flair for the fancy and kids can learn some new vocabulary from her, conveniently defined in the glossary at the back of the book. Highly recommend!

Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing via NetGalley for gifting my family with an ARC to review. We loved it!

Unicorn for a Day by Dana Simpson

My my oldest daughter was five, one of the librarians at our local library asked me if my daughter liked unicorns. I believe I responded, “Who doesn’t?” At which point she insisted I put a copy of Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson on hold.

The moral of this story is: always trust your librarian.

My oldest daughter is ten now, and I think she feels too old for Phoebe and her Unicorn, but I don’t! (And I think it’s time to start reading it with my youngest daughter who is now 5).

For those of you who don’t know, the Phoebe and her Unicorn series is about a young girl who feels a little bit weird who happens to befriend a unicorn with the fantastic name of Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. It’s a sweet, funny comic without being treacly. It is exactly what I would have wanted to read as a child in between Calvin and Hobbes and the Far Side. I would go so far as to say it is the Calvin and Hobbes of today. (BTW, parts of Calvin and Hobbes does not hold up so well anymore. In our current world of school shootings and unapologetic misogynists, it feels uncomfortable at times.)

This volume is a collection of comic strips and I am amazed that newspaper comic strips are still a thing. This book is sweet and funny and surprisingly insightful when Phoebe’s parents talk about old tv shows and movies not aging well because of the inherent sexism, racism, and homophobia that went unexplored at the time.

I highly recommend this volume and this series to readers of all ages. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you Andrews McMeel Publishing for making me a hero with my 8 year-old daughter - she devoured this book in one sitting and was thrilled. I could hear her giggling the whole time. We've already placed our pre-order for the physical copy.

This was another funny and heartwarming edition from a beloved duo. I enjoy reading these with my daughter and the humor works for us both. We have the whole series and love them all. Thank you, again!

My child loves this series! This is a great graphic novel for young to middle elementary readers. A favorite part was that unicorn tears could heal anything. This is a great addition to the series!

I love Phoebe and Her Unicorn so much as a series. They are relatable, whimsical, and fun! I started reading these when my 8 year old brought them home. It's been a few years and we still enjoy them!

9yo Phoebe and her unicorn friend Marigold Heavenly Nostrils are back in another fun filled volume of sparkles and magic. This time sprinkled with a smidge of existential dread that is missing from.previous books. Among the story arcs, we see Phoebe and Marigold switch places the a day, we explore themes of maturity and growing up and compassion. But it's not all seriousness - Unicorn For A Day is still filled with the wit and sparkle we have come to know and love in the Unicorn books.

Dana Simpson's Unicorn books are on my "buy on sight" list, because they are a lot of fun

~ Many thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ~
