Christmas at the Snow Covered Inn by Lucy Coleman was a cute Christmas romance. The book is set at an inn in New Hampshire where interior designer Ria has been hired to work on the inn. There she meets Hayden, a businessman who has come home to help save his grandfathers inn. Ria has just been through a messy breakup and is determined to not let Hayden distract her from this big job, even though she finds him attractive and kind.

This story is well written, but I found it to be a little slow - the middle of the story dragging on. I know many will appreciate this cozy, Christmas story but the promise of a romance didn't save this one for me.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Yes, it sounds like the loveliest cosiest place to spend Christmas, however the story is predictable and conversations are not natural. It is all a bit manufactured and contrived. So a pleasant read, but nothing that will really grab your heartstrings or attention

Snowy New Hampshire and a cute in should be the perfect Christmas read, but I am sad to say this fell flat for me.

The setting is gorgeous and described in a lit of detail. There’s also a lot of description of bedroom design and interior decor. Every room makeover is a revelation to the characters.

And it was the characters that were my problem.

I didn’t feel any chemistry between Ria and Hayden. They were both far to angsty. One kiss and they each spent ages pondering the significance of it.

The parents could have resolved their problems if they had literally sat down and had one conversation.

If course it all ends happily ever after, but it all felt a bit contrived, and to be honest, I wasn't really bothered by then.

This is a nice read, a little slow, and some beautiful description of the setting and the food.

Some people will love this but it wasn’t for me.

Thank you to Netgalley for your gifted digital copy.

When Hayden travels to his parents' inn to help with a remodel, he finds romance in the bargain, with interior designer Ria. Family relationships become sticky, and despite the inn's new look and format, ownership of the inn hangs in the balance. It seems as though this family-owned business may be slipping away. Readers are left to find out how the situation resolves! The story is set in a beautiful snowy setting at Christmas time. There is a lot of dialogue and conversation amongst the characters, which seemed to me to bog down the plot. However, for readers who like to imagine a film or screenplay in their minds, this story might be something to enjoy and imagine.

It took me a while to get into this book as there was quite a lot of descriptive narrative in the first three chapters.
This is a gentle, Sunday afternoon ,with a hot chocolate, festive read, that won't set your heart racing but will leave you warm & cosy.

There was so much dialogue, it wasn't always clear who was speaking. And much of the plot got told in dialogue. There was a lot of telling. I didn't get a sense of the character's emotions. And as for the plot, a lot of it was centred around decorating rooms, which wasn't very compelling. Very cheesy. With thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Blurb

Interior designer Ria Porter wasn't expecting a white Christmas this year. But her latest job has landed her on location at a beautiful inn, nestled in the mountains and forests of New Hampshire. Ria can't believe her luck and is determined to make this project her best work yet.

Successful businessman Hayden Reynolds has hired Ria in a mission to save his grandfather's inn. But as Hayden and Ria soon realise, it will take more than a new coat of paint to heal the rifts that have torn his family apart.

But as the snowflakes continue to settle on the trees and the inn comes back to life, Hayden and Ria might be about to discover a whole new future this Christmas, that could change their lives forever...

Pour yourself a mug of hot chocolate and settle down with some mince pies for this charming, cosy Christmas romance!

My Opinion

This was a pleasant read. As the snow falls in New Hampshire, Lucy Coleman will leave you with that warm feeling that comes from a great festive novel. From the descriptions, the inn sounds like a winter wonderland. A light-hearted festive read, that will help you get into the spirit of Christmas.

Hayden wants the family inn to remain in the family and hires Ria to reinvigorate some life into it, and redo the interior, but as they work together and his parents speak up about their individual feelings about the inn and the lifestyle it gives them, a different perspective is achieved. A warm a cosy feel to this story as Ria manages to help this family but physically and emotionally whilst finding love for herself with Hayden.

This book has something for everyone. It gives us hope, romance, family relationships, marital woes and the desire to make the inn shine again set in the most wonderful scenery. Hayden has hired an interior designer to rescue the inn and she soon comes to realise that there is more to this job, than just her usual artistic flair. She has to tread sensitively, trying to bring his parents into the dream vision and that all their memories won't be erased as the inn has a new breath of life. You could just see each room come to life again and smile at the battle to declutter but maintain everything that lived there before!
Will everything work out well and please everyone- you need to read this one!

Ria is an interior designer and is hired by Hayden to restore his grandfathers inn. They've both had complicated lives and it doesn't help when they start falling for each other

This gorgeous story is packed with real warmth and depth of emotion as we follow Ria and Hayden to the mountains of New Hampshire. The premise is essentially simple, but the execution is skilled. I felt all manner of emotions as the story built momentum and headed for what I thought was a natural conclusion. I should have known that you can’t make assumptions with this author.
Told with two first-person characters, I did take a moment to figure out who was speaking as that wasn’t always clear. That said, I was reading into the early hours, which could explain a lot. As the synopsis explains, the story follows the relationship between successful businessman, Hayden Reynolds and exceptional interior designer, Ria Porter. Together, they are on a mission to restore and update the Inn on the River. Having been in Hayden’s family for generations, it is now being run by his parents.
I found that this story was beautifully constructed with characters that I could completely identify with. The trials that they each faced were a natural part of human life. The doubts that arise from taking on a new challenge and realising that your partner may not be fully supportive of you- choices are both real and terrifying. Lucy Coleman handles the storytelling with a skilled and empathetic hand.
I honestly loved Ria’s character and was absolutely invested in her finding happiness. Her strength of spirit as she rebuilt her life in the face of her failed relationship will resonate with so many readers. Hayden also deserved some joy as he carried the wounds from his earlier choices. But, of course, when two people are battle-scarred from past relationships, it’s never just about meeting someone new.
There is a terrific supporting cast, and I developed a real soft spot for Frank, the grieving farmer who was always available to help. My favourite character would have to be the Inn. I know that it’s an inanimate participant, but I loved reading the wonderful descriptions and could almost imagine being there. A special mention to the breathtaking scenery that equally played a part.
It was a pleasure to shift gear and enjoy a trip to New Hampshire. This story was packed with warmth and a wonderful, beautifully executed story. Highly recommended.
