A Jaw dropping storyline...
The Cleaner by Kiersten Modglin is a must read!!!
I absolutely loved this book!!
Listened to it in just one sitting at 1.75x
I was hooked right from the beginning.
From the past story to the present, the suspense, twist and turns, second chance at love, intertwined so beautifully and written so well that I wish it never ended.
This had all the feels.
It was cute, sad, happy, funny, dark.
Oh and that twist at the end wrapped it up so well.... A beautiful box with a nice bow.
An absolute 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Such an awesome twist in the story, felt like I knew the story but was thrown a curve ball in the end. Definitely want to listen to more of Kiersten Modglin's audiobooks.

The Cleaner by Kiersten Modglin was my first romance of hers and I loved it. I listened to this and Rachel L. Jacobs, Heather Costa and Chris Andrew Ciulla were amazing. This was opposites attract genre with great mystery and suspense. I loved the shock in this one and adored the MC. Kiersten writes the best twisted plots. If you love romance as much as I do and KM then I’m sure you’re going to love this one. Definitely recommend.

This book, The Cleaner, goes back and forth between the present and the past. It's also read in multiple voices. Gunner, the main character, was a bad boy teenager, who met an angel of a girl, until... Now he's a cleaner. He cleans up after people have died, and he's good at it, so good that he can smell death before he sees it. That ability takes him back to his hometown where the past becomes the present.

As a Kiersten Modglin fan, I was excited to get approved for the audio ARC of The Cleaner which is book 1 of 4 in The Messes Series. The series was originally published in 2018 and now audiobook lovers can finally listen to the series.

I feel conflicted about how to review this novel. Overall, it had the twists I expected and also kept me guessing which I really enjoyed. What disappointed me is that I wanted more of the MMC job! That is what drew me to the book. I thought there would be crime scene clean ups in the story but sadly there wasn’t. While the book kept me entertained, I was expecting so much more.

The narrators did an excellent job and if you are looking for a romantic suspense this might be just what you are looking for.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4

Thank you #netgalley for the audio ARC in exchange for an honest review. The Cleaner is out now on all formats.

The Cleaner
Book 1 in The Messes series
by Kiersten Modglin
Narrated by Rachel L. Jacobs; Heather Costa; Chris Andrew Ciulla

As a KMod fan, I was anticipating the typical suspense/thriller, but this was completely different! I always say that I love how Kiersten Modglin always comes up with completely unique ideas for her stories. Well this one is no exception. This si Gunner and Reagan's second chance at romance. Reagan's sister is found dead and Gunner is the one called to clean up the scene. He didn't expect it to be his ex's sister. He returns home in the wake of her death and is reunited with Reagan, his ex-girlfriend. As things are revealed and Gunner and Regan grow closer, the story culminates in a wild surprise that will keep you listening until the very end.

I really enjoyed Gunner and Reagan's story. The book was an easy and fun listen. KMod did it again! I'm looking forward to listening to the other books in the series! Note: This is a standalone story.

Thank you to KMod, NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the chance to listen to and review this ARC!

When I saw the description of this book and what our male MC does for a living, I'm not going to lie, I was hoping for more on the job action. In case you're curious, there is no on the job action. So if you're hear for the crime scene clean up, it doesn't really happen. Some explanation of the job in the beginning but this story is about that lost first love.

This book was released on Kindle and print originally in May of 2018. As far as I can tell this is the first release of the audio version, with some updated covers. There have been several covers over the years, but I feel like this current one looks the best and captures more of what our story is actually about.

We have a primarily dual POV here with a surprise third thrown into the mix, we won't talk about that one to avoid any spoilers. Gunner is our primary POV and our male love interest with a messed up family. He fell for the town "princess" when they were still in high school and then something happened and he left town for 8 years. The only thing bringing him back was a random tragedy. Then we have Reagan, the town princess who keeps being saved by the town bad boy. Her heart broken after he vanished with no good-bye or explanation. Now Reagan has to come to terms with Gunner being back in her life.

The vast majority of this book probably the first 80% was learning how we got to where we are. We have Reagan telling our flashback story and Gunner telling our present day story. Does everything in this story make sense? Nope it does not, I think the author's writing has improved over the years, but there were quite a few very cringe moments. I mean with all the history between these two MC's which was pretty much 2 years of young love, then 8 years of nothing, why would you just go back to being madly in love like nothing happened? I think I thought the story was kind of sweet and you're rooting for everyone in the moment, but when you think back it doesn't really work. I will maintain my enjoyment because I did like the story while I was reading it.

Overall the story is fine, it is primarily a second chance romance with a dash of "suspense". Random dead bodies and murder plots do occur. There are some triggers like rape, which was an accidental rape(?), attempted rape, child abuse, and murder. My advice is to go in and not think about it and enjoy the ride. I will be picking up the next book in the series which follows' Reagan's ex.

I’m not sure this book was for me, like I originally thought it was. I didn’t feel connected to the characters or the story at all. I did like the audio performance, though.

4.25ish stars

Well, this book was not at all what I expected; when I read things from this writer, I go in thinking I’m getting a suspenseful story, but instead I got a super angsty romantic drama. It was a surprise, but a pleasant one. I’m looking forward to continuing this series in the future.

I'm a Kiersten Modglin fan, so when this audiobook showed up on Netgalley I immediately requested it, with not really reading the synopsis. But in Modglin fashion I was sucked into the story rather quickly. The romance was the right amount and the plot was great. I enjoyed the ending!
Four stars!!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kiersten Modglin for this audio-ARC in exchange for my honest feedback and review.

Gunner is a cleaner in New York. Not the kind of cleaner you expect though. He is an expert in cleaning crime scenes. When his neighbor is murdered he realizes he knows her and must now return to the town he left years ago and vowed never to return to. When he has to come face to face with his first love Reagan memories and feelings flood back.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. Not only did the twist shock me but it kept wanting more with the romance second chance story-line. Highly recommend!

"The Cleaner" by Kiersten Modglin is a captivating novel that skillfully weaves a tale of love, heartbreak, and redemption. The story follows Gunner and Reagan, high school sweethearts whose relationship was shattered in an instant. However, eight years later, they find themselves unexpectedly reunited, bringing to the forefront the question of whether time can heal old wounds. Gunner's heartbreaking journey and the well-developed characters make this book a compelling read. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Modglin delivers an unexpected twist that will leave you gasping. If you're a fan of emotionally-charged and suspenseful romance novels, "The Cleaner" is a must-read!

I was hooked right away. The narrators both had soothing voices and the the way it starts off with a murder ... it just drags you right in and you instantly want to know what's going on.
And all the twists and turns! I'm usually really good at seeing what's coming next but I had no idea how this would end. It turned into an even better story than I had anticipated!
I will absolutely be wanting to read anything else by this author. I am an instant fan.

When you think of Kiersten Modglin, you don't think that romance in and of itself is her thing. If you think about it, she gained notoriety for The Arrangement and while it is a suspenseful romance, this book was by far something I did not know I needed to read. I had to finish as soon as possible and it was something I could not put down.

Gunner James is a cleaner and not the typical cleaner you're thinking of. Gunner cleans up crime scenes, so he is used to messes. Gunner is also running from his past, but when his past catches up with him and he has to return home, he runs into the unexpected. Reagen Orrick has a past filled with heartbreak and when that heartbreak comes barreling back into her life, everything rushes back. Can two people who once upon a time loved each other, find their way back to one another or will the unexpected happen and they be torn from each other forever?

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the free copy of The Cleaner by Kiersten Modglin and introducing me to a side of Kiersten I didn't know I needed. I cannot wait to listen to or read the rest of this series.
