Thank you net gallery for the copy of this book. The book is three different parts of the same ongoing adventure of
Takuan and his companions. This is a fun read, and the chapters end with a bit of a cliffhanger with a read on if you want to know what happens next. I would recommend. It did end kind of abruptly, so I hope there are more adventures.

The story starts with a mysterious stone marten who, in an effort to impress others of her kind and become their leader, promises to bring them the sun. This turns out to be far more difficult than she first expected , though she is a clever tricker star. Her story mixes with those of others as she explores Heaven and Earth, there are many colorful and interesting characters in this book and lots of epic bad guys, but there’s so much happening it’s hard to tell where everything begins. It’s all woven nicely together and has a lot of cultural air to it that makes it fun, like an old story being told instead of a book you’re reading. Great plot and lots of action and adventure and weredemons to boot.

The cover of the story got me interested in reading the story. Unfortunately, its pretty cover did not help in making me want more of the story. As a reader, I have a lot of other books to get through and so I've made the decision to drop this one.

Big thanks to NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

This book was exactly what I hoped it would be: a captivating fusion of Chinese and Japanese mythos that I’ve genuinely never read anything like before. It has that lightning-fast style that often comes with translated works and for an anthology of three books, it really kept the pace up. I recommend Takuan’s adventure to anyone who needs a good folk tale in their lives!

Unfortunately, I did not finish this after three chapters. The style here isn’t the kind of thing I enjoy. It isn’t bad, just not for me. It resembles traditional mythology, which I believe is the author’s intention. However, I’ve never liked traditional myths and fairy tales because I find they don’t delve into characters emotions enough to provide me with for what I look for in literature. This focuses on external events and archetypes rather than characters’ internal motivations. That said, I believe this might suit readers who like traditional mythological narratives.

Unfortunately this one just wasn't for me. I enjoyed the concept and the first half of the story, but then it become more and more repetitive to read. I think the world building, concept, and mythology are super cool with unique story telling structure, but some parts can be edited down so it won't be as meandering and repetitive.

I loved this book so much. What drawn me to it was the cover and the synopsis. Now what can I say about this book and the character's without spoiling it? Everything was for sure whimsical and the character's are likeable. I highly recommend to everyone.

Ryu Zhong has a great writing style and it left me excited to read more in this world. The characters had a great feel to it and they worked well in this world. It left me wanting more and I enjoyed the fantasy elements.

What starts as a trickster tale, quickly evolves to multi-POV adventure journey where gods and demons are involved. A mischievous boy matures and joins a team of gods’ emissaries on a mission to save the world. But what is more important, to save the ones he loves.

Easy to read, whimsical, full of action, with an incredible sense of style, this book is unputdownable.
