We are huge karate fans in our house. This book was insanely well written and the graphics were so well done. Kudos to the artist. My son absolutely enjoyed this book and I think any household would benefit from having this hysterical children’s book.

This is a cute and funny book with great illustrations. The book doesn't have a lot of substance and doesn't have a teaching message at all, but it is entertaining and very silly.

This was HILARIOUS! My son loved the illustrations and talking about each page. We both agreed this grandma was pretty cool and hip! The ending was surprising! Such an enjoyable, quirky book to read! Even your early readers can read it themselves! Loved it!

I received this book from NetGalley to read and review. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book with my son.

I'm a grandmother and I do karate, so I was thrilled to see a book with this title. But when I read it, I didn't like it. It leans to too many stereotypes and presents grandma in a less than stellar way. And it doesn't do much better with the soul of karate either. Karate is a self-defense art and honestly we don't go around attacking people or threatening to do so. Perversely, the biggest wish of any serious karate-ka is to never have to use what they've learned. This book also says nothing about the culture and honestly, we frown on wearing the gi (uniform) out in public.
The font that is used for some of the words is very Chinese Restaurant-ish and cringe-worthy to many of us.

So, great idea, but please take this back to the drawing board. Does the author even know a grandmother who does karate? Surely it is nothing like this!

Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. It was definitely not my cup of tea.

This is a hoot! This is one of the funniest, cutest picture books I’ve read in a really long time. I loved it and had a great time! The illustrations are beautiful. I loved this style of artwork. The illustrations also helped to tell the story and gave it more humor. It’s too adorable!

I loved seeing how this elderly woman wasn’t held back by her age. She shows everyone that getting old doesn’t mean your life is over and can’t be exciting anymore. I love breaking the stereotype of weak, feeble senior citizens in this story. I also appreciated how the grandmother gave back to the retirement home by teaching her peers karate and getting them active again. This is definitely a great message of never letting anything hold you back, not even age. Highly recommend - even to adults!!

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. These are my own thoughts and opinions.

🥋 This book is so cute! Who wouldn’t enjoy seeing a Grandma karate chopping her way through life?

🥋The story is quite funny because the old Granny does leave a path of destruction in her wake sometimes!! In some scenes she is chopping through other older people and walkers and canes are flying!

🥋 The message here is that the older generation can be just as active as younger people! This book challenges the preconceived notions some children may have about “old people” and I’m loving it!

🥋 This would be a great book for grandmas and grandchildren to read together – especially if any of them know karate! Hiii-yah!

Thank you @NetGalley and Rosen Publishing Group for an eARC of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I think this story might be a portrayal of how gen-z gonna age soon. Haha.

So,this story is about a grandma who's devoted to her hobby: karate!

It is funny tho, reading all the things gran did with her karate, and i like the simple yet witty writing style, makes it funner to read.

Dear author,
Can we have another story about gran?

Thank you netgalley for the hi-yahhh! Advanced readers copy.

This is a delightful book about a grandmother who not only knows karate, but loves to use it everywhere - from the beach to the supermarket! She even teaches other elderly people how to do it.

The story delivers the important message to young children that older people can not only be fun, they can also be fit - and willing to try new things and enjoy new experiences.

The illustrations are terrific, and kids will most likely enjoy all the opportunities to kick, deliver karate chops and leap around in all directions as Gran does!

So what will Gran try next? Read the book, and you'll find out.

My Gran Does Karate is a hilarious book about a young at heart karate-chopping grandma. Gran shows young readers that age is simply a number. She proves that if there is something you love doing, age should never be an obstacle. It is quirky and imaginative, and the illustrations are equally as playful and enjoyable. My Gran Does Karate is an entertaining and funny book that young readers will truly get a kick out of!

Imagine little giggles and small martial arts moves to copy Gran within the pages. That was the reaction of my two boys. The words have a smooth cadence, and the storyline is light-hearted, with a good dose of competition. The bright and colorful illustrations make the book stand out, especially of the adorable grandparents.
Definitely be ready for action-style moves and smiles when reading this book. I highly recommend it to any age, especially Grandmas.

Completely daft and also rather brilliant with it, this shows a kid in awe of his admittedly awesome granny, who is an ace at karate. She practises it all hours – leaving grandad asleep in his bubble-wrap armour – and it's not the only thing she does that is unexpected, for she clearly breakdances and likes to rock out with the best of 'em. All this comes across through superlative artwork, and all told the plot might be a little weak, and the final punchline perhaps the poorest element, but this is a joyous celebration of the elderly. I can't see this being the bearer of a truth many readers will have in common with it, but they will find it great fun to look at, even if only once. Windmill do like to find great picture books from around the world and give them a reprint, and they've served us really well here – four and a bit shuriken.

My Gran Does Karate is FULL of gorgeous illustrations!!! That’s what captured my attention when I first began this book. Gran is a character for sure and she’s just a whole ball of fire. This is an adorable humorous children’s book that I am excited to share with my Grandmuffin!! This honest review is offered in exchange for a digital copy from Netgalley.

This was absolutely adorable! My 3 year old loved it and wanted me to read it again and again. This shows a very active Grandma living her best life and still making time for her grands. The illustrations were on point and the end left it open for another grandma adventure.

This granny knows how to kick butt! With a chop and a "hii-yah!" she can tackle anything. Kids would enjoy being able to repeat the phrases and work out the motions in the book.

My Gran Does Karate is a comical, entertaining book.
Gran shows everyone she may be old but she is a force to be reckoned with. She does karate everywhere; in the supermarket, on the beach, at a wedding and even teaches at the nursing home.
The illustrations add to the comedic tale. They are bright and colourful and really help bring the story to life.
The book is short, which is perfect for preschoolers. I would recommend this book for children aged 3-6.

My 3 year old thoroughly enjoyed the book and giggled the whole way through. She enjoyed demonstrating Gran's "block and chop" and "kick and spin" moves.

A fun, light hearted book for little ones!
