This book follows the messy, tangled lives of a few characters in a neighborhood as they navigate marriage, parenthood, adultery, crime, and so much more.
Recommend reading if you enjoy the following tropes:
- Multiple POV
- Dysfunctional relationships
- Mystery
- Who committed the crime
I listened to this book on audio but I would recommend reading with so many characters involved.
Thanks, Netgalley for the audio arc of this book!

The Neighbors We Want focuses on a set of neighbors and their unsettling connections. Adam is an unsatisfied stay-at-home dad (SAHD) who sees something strange through his windows one night. He fears someone is missing or worse.
Told from numerous perspectives and angles, we learn that no one is exactly who they seem and everyone is keeping secrets from their neighbors and their own families. There were numerous explicit scenes in this book, but they were not spicy. These sexual snippets built the tension and a strong sense of discomfit.
While I liked the ending, I did feel it was incongruous with the rest of the book. Overall, I ended this one wondering what the heck did I just read.

Harried couple Adam and Sarah are adjusting to life as new parents. The plan was for teacher Sarah to take a year off work to be with the baby, but that was before Adam was fired from his job. He's now a stay at home dad (or SAHD) while Sarah goes back to work. Sarah's boss, the rich and supercilious Evie, seems to be a bit overly concerned with Sarah, sending her inappropriate photos and giving her expensive gifts. Adam, bored at home, becomes somewhat obsessed with Ali, the young woman renting the house across the street. When he realizes he hasn't seen her recently and notices her obnoxious and scary boyfriend Crispin (spoiled son of Sarah's boss Evie) urinating on her house, he begins to suspect that Crispin have done something to Ali.
The story goes back and forth from the points of view of the various characters, and also plays with the timeline of events being revealed. I really enjoyed the narrator's ability to switch between characters and to give them all different personalities. Since the story moved around so much it was sometimes hard to keep up with the events -- something would be mentioned and I'd wonder, "Did I miss that?" only for it to be explained a bit later on. I enjoyed the story but the characters were all somewhat difficult to like!

The Neighbors We Want follows a SAHM dad and a whole cast of characters. With multiple pov's, this story focuses on the ugliness and secrets of one circle of interconnecting people. I feel like I am in the minority of enjoying the narrator and the way she brought menace into the rambling thoughts of Adam. I find myself now quoting "What did he do? Did he do something? What did he do?" In the cast of characters there is no one to root for. That is something that I do not mind, but I know there are some readers who like at least one character to have at least one redeeming quality. This suspense story will leave you wanting a little more thrill to it.
Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for a audiobook copy of The Neighbors We Want by Tim Lane.

Really had a hard time getting into this one. Struggled reading and then tried audiobook and just wasn’t for me. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Dreamscape for the ALC.
Unfortunately this book was a miss for me. I think part of this may have been the marketing. I wouldn’t classify this as a thriller or suspense, and I certainly wouldn’t compare it to a Paula Hawkins. I just went in expecting something different. It is clear the author is a talented fiction writer, but I was waiting for something that never came.
I also didn’t love the narrator. Her whisper became grating, especially the “Did he do something? What did he do?” Over and over and over.

I definitely enjoyed the characters and story line of this book. Although I don't mind a little spice in my reading, this book was a little too raunchy for me at times. Some of it I didn't feel added any to the story and could have easily been left out. With that being said I would still recommend this book to friends that I know wouldn't mind reading that part of it.

Thank you for letting me listen to your Audio book.
It was ok. I thought at times it moved slow. I kept putting it down and then started it up again.. The Audio voice was good but I just didn't get into this book like I thought I would.
still giving it 4 stars. thank you

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This book was set up in a very interesting way with so many different perspectives. Overall it was a decent story, but all of the characters were so horrid that I wanted all of them to be put away. The layering of the story really made it gripping and interesting since the people did nothing to pull me into the story.

To be honest, I didn't love the storyline of this one. I could have dealt with one couple having an affair but to have more than that, it kind of bordered on over the top. The characters weren't overly likable and while I don't necessarily need them to be, in order to enjoy a book, in this case I found I wasn't too interested in what happened to either of them purely because they were so awful. There were a few good twists thrown into the story however overall, this book was just average for me.

I didn’t enjoy The Neighbors We Want by Tim Lane.
While I typically enjoy unlikable characters, all the characters in this one were so over the top obnoxious it was difficult to root for anyone. Everyone in this story was a horrible person making horrible choices…
Also, I’m not typically one that is bothered by this sort of thing, but this is a multi POV and the majority of the voices are women commenting on motherhood, specifically newly postpartum motherhood, and it just didn’t work for me knowing a male had written his version of what he expected the postpartum haze of being a working mom to be. Oh, and don't get me started on the leaking nipples (if i didn't know any better, id suspect the author had a kink).
And the male character Adam, who is a stay at home dad, was by far the most annoying to me; while I know the constant repetition of phrases was supposed to reinforce his OCD issues, all it did was annoy me, especially on audio.
I don’t know… nothing about this felt authentic to me.

This book was very hard to follow. I felt like I had missed the opening chapters and was thrown in about halfway through. The characters are very unlikeable and there was never a connection felt with them.

I was excited to read this one, especially since I am a new mom and felt like I could relate to the main character being at stay at home dad.
Unfortunately this book was pretty flat for me, I ended up calling it quits around 35%
I had this on audio and it was just too slow with no progression, and the characters were not likable. And I was not a fan of the narrator!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for a advanced readers copy (audiobook)!

Everyone in this book just were kind of terrible people. All of them. I don't want any neighbors like these people!! But at least they get to stick together and raise their kid? It make me wonder if there are really people out in the world like this...I really hope not! Author Tim Lane did a great job of making these terrible people come to life on the page and show their terribleness. I am now off to add all of his books to my TBR!

This book was hard to follow at first. But it was such a twisty book! I enjoyed it once I got into it. Definitely will read more by this author.

Hayley has always believed that her father murdered her mother, her best friend, and her twin brother. Her other brother was never found, but Hayley’s father pleaded guilty to the murders. Now years later, Ethan‘s bones have been found, and it becomes apparent that her fathers confession was false. Why would he claim to have killed his family? Enter DI Locke and his officers, they know a killer has gotten away with murder, gotten away with it for years. The squad begins their investigation, but it soon becomes clear that the killer will do anything, including kill again to escape detection. A top-notch British police procedural.

Words Words Words oh so many words. The narrator did a very nice job but I personally don’t think this novel is well-suited for publishing as an audio book. I couldn’t wait to finish this book due to the wordiness so I’m reluctant to recommend.
We’ve all seen sitcoms or movies and the character can read minds. What we quickly learn - the moral of the plot - is this is a superpower that no one wants. Here the author gives purview to 3+ rather unlikeable main characters’ internal and constant inner monologues to somewhat unreliably tell the story of what happened and “whodunnit”. The author even throws in rambling thoughts for a few moments from a guy at the bus stop. Another main character we mainly hear from a police interview and another through a private internet blog except their thoughts are also revealed by the author at times. Among these words and inane thoughts, a half decent mystery is revealed. I could do without knowing the guy needs to take a shit or the lists of the ways a house is dirty. I didn’t find the ending very satisfying.
These five characters are very dysfunctional and for me, it was confusing for a while what was going on especially because one character was referred to by 2 names. Tons of adultery or emotional cheating. We get a window into post-partum depression, compulsion, obsession, substance abuse and self harm. Much commentary about Portland residents’ liberal attitudes and current rich and soon to be rich via working at an Amazon-like Company, Logistics.
Synopsis: Adam loses his job and finds himself a stay at home dad and from time to time encounters the wanna be artist across the street. New mother Sara is a teacher at a ritzy school and struggling post baby. Sara has drawn the odd unwanted attention of the school’s principal - primarily because her son is dating the artist. Over basically a 2 day period, their lives intersect and the consequences are profound.
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

A twisty domestic thriller told from the POV of a sleep-deprived stay at home dad who thinks he may know what (or who) is responsible for the disappearance of one of his neighbors. Excellent on audio narrated by one of my fav, Cindy Kay and perfect for fans of books like The woman in the window. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!

This was NOT the book we want. I am sorry but it was just too, bizarre or should I say uncomfortable for me. We are inside the minds of some pretty messed up characters. We have Adam a stay at home dad who is a total pervert. Sarah-Adam's wife-a school teacher who is having an affair with her Boss, Evie's son Crispen/Kemp. Crispen is also carrying on with Adam and Sarah's across the street neighboor Ali, oh yeah and Adam is Peep Tomming (Did I just make that a verb??) on Ali. Adam is a stay at home dad because he got fired from his job because he was looking at adult pictures at work. If you can follow all that...well more power to ya. The plot had my head spinning.
With all that going on you would expect a whole lot to happen. When in fact, absolutely nothing happened.
Adam clearly had OCD as he had to check everything 3 times and had obsessive thoughts. The phrase - What did he do, did he do something, what did he do? is repeated adnaseuam. It took away from the book because it was interjected constnatly.
On top of the convaluded plot, gross language I had little care for any of the characters. The relationship between Sarah and was so messed up, and neither of them like their baby. Heck they didnt even like each other.
There were so many plot holes and the writing was truly sophmoric. I highly suggest not reading this horrible excuse of a book.
Thank you Net Galley for this advanced copy of The Neighbors We Want. I was not influenced or paid for this honest review
*Obviously*

This domestic suspense novel follows a set of neighbors. As we get to know them more and more secrets come to light. This novel was a quick listen, but at times was hard to follow and felt like it was lacking the back story or depth that I really wanted from the characters. The characters were largely unlikable, but I do not mind that in novels.
Listeners looking for a quick neighborhood domestic story with changing POV should look into this to see if it would work for them!
