This book could be a resource of ideas for primary grade or elementary grade teachers. There are many different types of beginner poetry presented within the pages of the book, and it is organized well. Directions are basic- I would not call this a how-to book, but there is one example given for each poem. There is no template for the poem types, so teachers will need to make their own.

I first saw Joseph Coelho on Twitter and loved his ability to inspire ordinary people to write poetry using his prompts. The book is just amazing and will allow all manner of people not just young people to grow in confidence when writing poetry.

Nice poetry prompts for kids!

Poetry Prompts is a really good illustrated resource guide for children of all ages who may be interested or have began writing poetry. It is full with prompts of all types to engage children with writing and reading poetry aloud. The illustrations were great too! This would have been a book I would have relished growing up because poetry until adulthood always felt overwhelming to me. Too big and too complex was what I'd always think. I'm glad to see books like this written. Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the gifted copy.

This book is wonderful! It is filled with poetry prompts for kids. The illustrations are marvelous and whimsical. There's a wide variety of prompts and I even learned some new poetry styles. I love that some of the poems had a powered up option to challenge young writers In a positive way. I plan to use this book in my classroom to challenge my students to write more poetry in their free time! I think this book would be a welcome edition in any classroom at any age (although, some of the poems are complicated and would be a 10+ rating).

Joseph Coelho's Poetry Prompts: All sorts of ways to start a poem is an engaging collection of poetry prompts tailored towards children who are 6-8 years old. Poetry Prompts provides an avenue to introduce or build upon existing poetry knowledge in an enjoyable and effective way. The book contains a series of 41 prompts featuring various topics including similes, emotions, haikus, holidays, and more. Each poetry prompt includes a "Poetry-Powered-up" prompt to take a child's imagination and writing skills even further. Coelho, an award-winning playwright, performance poet, and children's author, organized the progression of the book in such a way that children build upon their poetry skills as work their way from cover to cover. The illustrations by Georgie Birkett, Grasya Oliyko, Amanda Quartey, and Viola Wong are whimsical, fun, and the perfect compliment to this amazing compilation of poetry prompts. This book would be a fantastic addition to any library - home, school, and beyond.

Kind thanks to Joseph Coelho, Quatro Publishing Group - Wide Eyed Editions, and NetGalley for an advance reading copy of this beautiful book.

This illustrated children's book features a variety of different poems and ideas for how to write your own poems in different styles. The author clearly explains a variety of different technique and shares his own examples, but I found some of the pages rather cluttered, and many of the poems didn't appeal to me. Regardless of my personal taste, this will appeal to many kids who are interested in poetry, and will be a helpful educational tool.

What a beautiful book! A wonderful way to encourage little readers to tap into their creativity and just CREATE without hesitation. A book that says anyone and everyone can be a poet. I'd have loved to have this when I growing up and I know my children will love it now! Pure delight in book form.

A great book to use at home or in the classroom to inspire children to write poetry. We loved all the gentle information and exciting activities. It felt accessible and unintimidating, allowing children to learn that there is no right or wrong answers when it comes to writing - all ideas are valid and it's all about having a go. I will definitely use this book myself as a writer and with my children as well as recommending it to fellow teacher friends. I can't wait to see what amazing stuff the children create.

I read "Poetry Prompts" as an ARC off NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The book is lovely and helpful to teach young kids different strategies to approach writing poetry and find creativity. It is a cool idea to add a "power-up" section where each poetry prompt comes with an additional challenge to make the prompt more interesting. Also, I loved the illustrations and how colorful they were. All in all, the book was easy to understand as it aptly caters to the targeted audience.

This book, from the brilliant Joseph Coelho, can be enjoyed in different ways. Each type of poem has an example, meaning that the book can be enjoyed just like any poetry book. What makes this book special is that it is full of tips and hints for writing your own poetry, almost like an activity book. I can imagine this being a lovely gift for a child, with a nice notebook and pen for their ideas. I can also see this book being useful in the classroom and it is definitely one I shall be adding to my collection. The explanations of different types of poetry as well as other English terms, such as similies and metaphors, are really clear and are accompanied by engaging examples and lovely illustrations.

This book begins with instructions on how to produce a poetry journal, followed by 41 kid-friendly poetry prompts accompanied by fun illustrations and an example to show what is possible. It would make an excellent gift, along with a notebook, for an aspiring, young writer. It includes Christmas- and Easter-related prompts, so if using in a classroom, some adaptions might be necessary to reflect a diversity of religious (and non-religious) backgrounds. A fun and inspiring book for young writers!

Love love love the poetry invitations in this book! We've used a number of different books to help us write poems, but this book offers really accessible prompts for a very wide range of ages, and many are not just suggestions for different poetry forms to use, but concrete suggestions.
The book did make some cultural assumptions about the reader, so I took one star off for that, but otherwise language was very inclusive.

This book is a wonderful way to get creative juices flowing, and has been a fun exercise for my daughter and I to do together. The prompts are well done, and provide easy jumping off points. I can see us doing this again and again.

Joseph Coelho's "Poetry Prompts" is a cute and enjoyable way to introduce students to poetry. In each prompt, Coelho provides step-by-step introductions on how to create that particular poem. The instructions are accompanied by delightful illustrations that add to the creative environment. Some of the prompts are more advanced than others, so a teacher or parent could choose the best prompts for a particular child.

My class love Joseph Coelho poems so I knew this was a book I had to read. It's a book to dip in and out of if you are lacking inspiration for a poem or want to write a particular type of poem but are unsure where to begin. I love the first prompt which encourages you to create your very own notebook to record your ideas and thoughts. We are hoping to start a writing club this year and this book will certainly be a feature. I can't wait to share it with them.
