Excellent narrative exposing the current state of migration and its unique position in the history of humanity. The author deftly draws parallels and distinctions between migration in the Mediterranean and on the US Southern boarder and introduces the reader to nuances that drive migration from countries in crisis. The book serves as both a primer on the state of human migration now and a deeper dive into the ways that the rise of nationalism, climate change, and global inequality affect individual people. I think that attention to the humanity of the individual differentiates this book from other books about immigration generally. Highly recommend.

I love Markham’s writing style. She’s playing a lot with form, voice, authority, and structure which works and doesn’t throughout the book. It’s very ambitious which I love but also lacks a bit of flow and/or clarity. What she has to say about immigration is thoughtful and carrying and comes from a place that invigorates the work.
Overall solid.
