This series of historical romances centres around the heroines all working secretly as Lady knights. Each one has her own story or assignment, so you can read any of them alone .

Lady Elthelreda McGovern disappointed herself on her last assignment and hates being sidelined. Now at last she has a new one but, the very idea of wiping snotty noses and looking after children as part of her disguise is daunting.

Sir George Caldwell retired from years at war to look after his children. The memories of the blood on his hands, both at war and at home cause him extreme anxiety.

An action packed story that is so different to the usual ones of this era. I loved all the characters especially our heroine.

Great fun.

This is such a fun, entertaining, intriguing read. I love this world of the Lady Knights and getting to see each of them go on an adventure and find love along the way – is perfect. All of these females have a hidden side that is not usual for their times, but makes them who they are. George and Red are interesting, captivating, relatable characters. They captured my attention from the start and held it until the very end. The children are so entertaining and add the scene and the fabric of the story every time they are on page. I enjoyed the romance and the underlying subplots.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The book has plenty of entertainment if you set aside the uneasy feeling of disbelief that “Lady Knights” can exist in historical England. The plot and pacing keep you progressing in the storyline, and the characters are likable. The author has a solid voice with intriguing internal monologues that give depth to the characters. I wanted things to work out, a considerable plus in a Romance.

There are some intimate “spicy scenes” that can be read or skimmed through without losing the story. Some weaknesses are the few cringing moments when I had to remind myself to suspend the disbelief that a female undercover “knight” could exist in history. Even then, the story is solid, with my favorite tropes of second chances, spinsters getting happy endings, and falling in love with the “boss.”
3.4/5 stars.

This is the third installment in Cara Maxwell's new "Lady Knights" series. I've read all three, in order and have enjoyed every word. Cara is a gifted writer that uses romance, seduction, humor and a few sidekicks (Eveline/Archie) to introduce you to her characters. Captain (Sir) George Caldwell and Lady Ethelreda McGovern are not looking for love. He needs help with his hellions and she's a Lady Knight posing as his new governess. He's not looking for love, she's a confirmed spinster so of course they find each other. The journey to their HEA is worth the read, and it had a few unexpected twists along the way. You won't be dissappointed.

This is a stand-alone book, but there is so much to understand and look forward to if you read them all, but doesn't have to be in order. They appear to be happeing close together. Ready for Jane's story next.

Red is sent undercover to pose as a governess in order to find a famous assassin. What she does not expect is to develop feelings for the troubled children as well as their father George. Will things change when she reveals who she really is? I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.

First of all, I have not read the previous books in this series.
Red is a spy in a quest to unearth the identity of a French assassin in the house of an English colonel by posing as the children's governess.
George is a traumatised war veteran who cannot control his impulses around his new employee.
Together they fall in lust and love while Red also learns to love his children and stays alert to unmask a mischievous presence in the house who wishes George ill.
In my opinion, the book was well paced. However, I lacked a bit of context regardin Red's background. Also the story was a bit surreal. This was definetly NOT slow burn. In fact, it is such a fast burn that, for me, the chemistry between the hero and the heroine is not there at all.
I also believe the children should have been written as twins. The eldest one is a nine-year old and the youngest is five, but they behave very similarly while the differences should be abismal.
Furthermore, George seems very susrpised that Red (who is a spinster) is a virgin?? I mean, this is Regency England, so I don't get the shock. Also, the euphemisms in the sex scenes were not my favorite (love button), but I guess these things can be hard to write.
I received an ARC from NetGalley. This review reflects my honest opinion.

Disclaimer: I haven't read the previous books in the series, and jumped straight into this one.

Ethelreda "Red" McGovern is posing as an governess (tongue in cheek, I know!) in retired soldier Sir George Caldwell's household - in the hopes of apprehending a dangerous assassin working on Napoleon's behest. George, who has been an absentee father for most of his life, struggles in his role as a father and guardian of two intractable children.

The Spinster's Last Stand is a historical romance/ action/ mystery (which I LOVE!), which falls prey to the pitfalls of this genre - conveying a complete and believable story with a limited page count. One of the aspects this story struggled with is the balancing the competence of a military hero (who's survived Waterloo!) and an Elite!spy heroine who is hiding her martial abilities from him. The assassin arc, also dissatisfied me because of the heroine's investigative blunders.

I also was not quite onboard the romance (lust yes, romantic love no) - it was more to the style of 'tell, not show' and I never knew how and why they fell in love.

My thanks to Netgalley and the publishing team for the eArc, in exchange of an honest review

Wow this series just continues to knock it out of the park this and Grace Calloway’s series are my fav of the historical lady spy sub genre. Red is great with weapons and above being enticed by men and till she meets George our hero with guilt over what happened during his time serving his country, the state of his relationship with his children, and the state of his marriage when his wife passed away. This book is so steamy and has a great plot that helps build her relationship with George. I recommend this series and can’t wait for Janes book. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

He is struggling to make his family whole but being plagued by the nightmares of PTSD is making it difficult. His guilt does not help and he doesn’t know he and his children are in danger. She is there to uncover an assassin but turns out to be the answer to making the family complete and becoming their protector. Action filled, steamy scenes, charming characters you will easily fall in love with makes for a very enjoyable read.

Another new author for me, Cara Maxwell has created this series around strong, independent women who are members of a secret group dedicated to thwarting enemies of Britain. An unusual premise which definitely intrigued me, and each story stands on its own although there are references to the other Lady Knights. Ethelreda/Red is a feisty lady with sword skills as her speciality, she is assigned to Oxley Park to infiltrate the household in order to catch an infamous French assassin. She will pose as a governess to George Caldwell's two children. She does not anticipate her reaction to the master of the house which threatens to cloud her judgement and the success of her quest. George is a soldier recently retired with his own ghosts to banish adding another layer to the plot.
There is a decent solid plot to this book, rather more steamy than I expected but a great read nevertheless. The characters are well rounded and believable and the author creates a complete picture of the house and the lives of the residents. I look forward to her next book and will certainly follow the rest of this series. Thanks as always to Dragon blade publishing and Netgalley for an ARC of 'A Spinster's last Stand'. A solid 5 stars.

The plot itself moved at a good clip and had several twists and turns which kept things interesting. Overall, a fun read and I look forward to the next book in the series.

I enjoyed the previous two books in Cara Maxwell’s Lady Knights series and “A Spinster’s Last Stand” is a good addition. It is definitely a standalone as all three books thus far have at least somewhat overlapping timelines. The lady knight at issue in this book is Ethelreda “Red” McGovern, known for her abilities in hand to hand combat. She goes undercover as a governess in the home of former soldier Sir George Caldwell to capture a French assassin and finds lust, love, and danger.

Red is fantastic. She is strong and knows it. She has no qualms about walking towards danger and protecting others from it. Sir George took some time to grow on me. His treatment of his children is not great and neither is his habit of running away. But Red breaks through his pain and subtle change is made. The level of change however is not unbelievable, and while the time they spend together is short, it is still months versus days as it is in so many romances. Excellent steam.

4 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a complimentary ARC of this book. The opinions herein are my own.
