Murder mystery that starts at the end and works forwards. Keeps you guessing until the end (or beginning!). I enjoyed this book and would recommend

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to receive this book for an honest review.

I found myself picking up this book, putting it down, picking it up and found myself not finishing it.

There was just nothing that kept me interested enough to keep going. I didn't want to waste anymore time reading this one.

Unfortunately I found this hard to read. I found the ending a let down and no real plot or character development. Whilst it was easy to follow and flowed nicely in place, I just felt it a let down

The Push Over by Daney Parker is a mystery/thriller novel in which we know the murderer by we don't know the identity of the victim. Grace's wedding day ended in tragedy and in the lead up to it she had reasons to kill three of the guests attending: her new husband Conrad, her overbearing mother and her best friend Skye.

The premise of this sounded really unique so I was very excited to dive into this book. I thought the pacing and length of this book were perfect and I found myself flying through it. I enjoyed the small cast of characters we got introduced to and how developed they were. I liked the ending however I found it slightly predictable and a bit cliched.

I found the structure of this book slightly strange and even having finished it, I'm not sure how the newspaper headings are relevant to the story. I also found the subplot of Iris and the cats a bit tedious to get through and didn't feel like it added anything to the narrative.

Overall this was a fun, fast paced mystery and I would definitely recommend this if you are in a reading slump and need a quick, short read to get you out of it.

"A domestic thriller with a difference". Definitely an accurate description. Unlike most murder mysteries, we start the book with a confession, and await to find out who was murdered. A very simple story, but the characters are enjoyable. It's not too heavy or at all gruesome. A light hearted thriller.

Nobody wants to be a bridezilla, but it is not unusual for a bride - in the course of planning her wedding - to feel like murdering any number of people. From the event planner to the problemtic bridesmaid, all the way up to, in some cases, the groom.

Very few brides actually do this, however tempted they may feel at times. Grace though, is an outlier. She went all the way and got away with killing someone at her own wedding. Now as a reporter investigating the death of a cyclist she muses on her actions at the time.

The result is a highly readable and entertaining story where we do not find out until the end who the murder victim on Grace's big day actually was. Because it turns out that there were quite a few people to choose from! This book provides plenty of twists and turns in the telling, as well as some very funny bits, and the added draw of mysterious elements involving cats and criminals. It gets 3.5 stars.

I feel about this one the way I do about another recent novella I read - the set up for this is amazing but the ending left me feeling a bit disappointed. We know Grace is an unreliable narrator but the twist of the story (one might argue there are two) wasn't that big to me. I guess my expectation of this book was more murder mystery (backwards, because we have been told Grace killed someone) and less story of grief and healing. I don't mind the story of healing and finding your way back to yourself but that wasn't the tone of the story I was getting at all when I first started reading it. At times, part Eleanor Oliphant and times Gone Girl, it definitely ended more Emily Henry. I did love how quickly this book flew by, but the description of the book in the synopsis talks about Iris as though she's a main character, and she really only comes in halfway through the 150-page book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this highly unique psychological thriller.

Grace is a woman with a secret, she is struggling to cope with guilt following a rather unfortunate bout of murdering!! She fears retribution and tries to stay out of the limelight. Working as a reporter, she finds some of the stories she is asked to cover hit a little to close to home…

Through the superb narrative we discover that Grace’s perspective needs a few additional perspectives to shed some light in what us really going on!

A great book that is well worth exploring!

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Push Over' by Daney Parker.

Read and reviewed a physical copy for Daney Parker, Amazon publishing and Literally PR.

Publication date 19th April 2023.

This is the first book I have read by this author but I am definitely looking forward to reading more!!!

This novel consists of a prologue, 19 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book has an intriguing and uniques storyline which captivated my attention from the very first page to the last word. It is definitely unlike any book I have ever read and is filled with mystery, toxic relationships, friendship, suspense, humour and absolutely everything you could ask for in an intriguing page turner. All of the characters are complex and you have no idea who is telling the truth, who is hiding secrets and who is actually trying to help Grace or who actually cares for her at all. The characters create mixed emotions from anger to humour with everything that they do. The relationships between all of the different characters are thought provoking and it left me questioning how Grace thought that some of these characters could be her so called friends. Throughout the book Grace refers to herself as a murderer but doesn't reveal why immediately. The reader is drip fed information about what happened to lead to certain events through Grace's confessional chapters. I was left guessing throughout and then there is a second character we end up meeting who may or may not also be a killer. There were times where I was laughing until tears streamed down my face, others where I was shouting at certain characters for the way they were and acted and other times I was screaming at Grace for not seeing what was right in front of her!!! I definitely ended up having a few strange looks when I was reading this outside waiting for the kids to come home!!!
It is absolutely ram packed with twists, turns, cats, drama, arguments, romance, humour, drama, secrets, lies, suspense, tension, news and much more with something going on at all times keeping you glued to the pages!!! This is a perfect beach read or one to curl up with in front of a fire. This book is such an easy read with the words flowing I just could not put it down. This book had me on the edge of my seat but also had me laughing until I got some very strange looks from my partner so make sure your not walking around or near the public when reading, especially when drinking tea!!! Some of the goings on and characters had me in absolute stitches!!! The characters were an eclectic mix, each having their own unique personalities. They all had their own quirks and habits and all work perfectly together to create this fantastic storyline. I must admit there were several that I could not stand but you can't like everyone in a book as with real life and regardless of whether you love or hate them they were all needed to make this book as intriguing as it is!!! Needless to say each character was realistic and were all in the storyline for a reason and not just added to bulk the book up. A fantastic gang of characters that all come to life with Daney's fantastic evocative writing skills.

Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read an extract from Daney's 'Deady' which promises to be just as intriguing as this book and one I'm looking forward to reading myself!

Overall an intriguing, page turning, cosy domestic confessional which will keep you hooked throughout.

283 pages.

This book is just £2.99 to purchase on kindle and £7.99 in paperback via Amazon (at time of review) which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 4/5 (I enjoyed it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Murder mystery where the plot thickens backwards of your usual thriller. Grace is a quirky character who generally believes in the good in others even her mother who torments her in strange ways as a child. Suspenseful and keeps you wondering who was murdered and why all the way to the end.

I really didn't enjoy this book. It didn't flow very well and the writing was poor. I struggled to finish it. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

Well crafted murder mystery - unusual conceit which genuinely did keep me guessing. The file was really poorly formatted/edited with sentences, words, and letters missing so at times it was a bit tricky to read easily - not ideal

I love mystery/ thrillers that are infused with dark humour aswell and this certainly managed that. Good storytelling, credible characters, a solid read with a clever twist

Unexpected Dark Humour..
The investigation of a current murder poses some problems for reporter Grace - as memories begin to surface of another murder, one that is a little closer to home - in this unexpected novel of domestic drama come suspense. With a plot populated with a credible and well drawn cast, secrets and surprises aplenty and an enjoyable setting comes an entertaining, and keenly observed, tale nicely laced with dark humour.

This is a beautiful book in so many ways. I suspect it is intended to be more light hearted and amusing than I took it to be - and, in a way, it was both of those things. But there is something deeply moving about the way the story unfolds and how Grace comes to terms with her truths. I loved the quirky characters and the way they interacted. I adored the writing style, which landed me smack in the middle of everything.
