Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Loved this thriller. Plenty of suspense and surprise. I already am a big fan of Lisa Hall and this book lived up to her others.
This is a book to check out.

Lisa has done it again. I was hooked from the start.
Becky’s mother has died and so she goes back to the island she grew up on.
But it’s clear that Becky has a past because a lot of people try to get her to leave.
She starts looking into a disappearance from a year ago but with her own record for lying, no one wants to believe her.

I thought that every character was clear and developed. The plot was fantastic, it never slowed down as something new was revealed all of the time.
There are enough characters to leave you guessing. And as always, the plot twist in the final line will leave you reeling!

Really enjoyed this who-done-it set in a small island town. Becky returns to the small island town of her youth for a funeral. Becky is a true crime writer and finds herself looking into a recent case on the island of a woman gone missing, this case has echo's of the past, another girl gone missing when Becky lived on the island.
As Becky moves forward with her investigations it seems not everyone wants the past uncovered and sinister forces want Becky to back off.
This one had me guessing, it was really clever and well worded.

Nail biting tension with a killer twist! Atmospheric and the island is so incredibly haunting. The suspense is tight until the suprise ending.

I love a book set in a small town. This one hit the mark for me. Loved how a true crime writer was a main character. I was kept guessing throughout the book and that is a huge plus for me.

“The Day She Disappeared” is a clever, who-dun-it mystery set within a small island town. After leaving her home to pursue a successful writing career, Becky returns home from London to her isolated island community for the funeral of a loved one, only to be pulled back into the shadows of a dark past she thought she left behind. As a true crime writer, Becky starts to investigate a recent case of a young woman who disappeared from that very town, which is eerily similar to the case of a missing girl from Becky’s past. As Becky starts to draw parallels between the two cases, she questions the familiar faces from her past as well as the newcomers to the island, and suspects someone is more sinister than she realized. Are her enemies closer than they appear?

I love thrillers that derail your guesses at every turn and keep you stumped until the end, and I have to say I really was caught by surprise at the ending. The circumstances around each character are revealed slowly and I felt as though I was putting a puzzle together one tiny piece at a time and couldn’t wait to see how the story ended. Becky is an interesting and flawed character with her own demons. While Becky’s mysterious past is mentioned early in the story, the actual circumstances are not revealed until later in the book. This built up her character for me as a reader; I didn’t know how to feel about her as a protagonist until digging into the story. It’s another thing that keeps you guessing!

The quiet seaside town and small population gives the story a somewhat “sleepy” mystery feeling, but enough of the characters are suspect that the story never seemed boring. This gave the story an eerie feeling reminiscent of reading true crime. (I could just picture the fog rolling in off the water as I read!). Overall an enjoyable thriller to read.

The Day She Disappeared

Sixteen years ago Rebecca (Becky) left her childhood home Kirton Island vowing to never return, after a call from friend Megan telling her that her Mother is ill and Becky should return she does it soon becomes clear she is not wanted and not welcome she may be able to forget why she left but they can't .
Becky being a journalist/true crime writer decides to stay until she can discover what happened to Violet, a young girl who disappeared a year ago believed to have run away to the mainland, Ivy Violets sister is absolutely convinced this is not the case, so Becky starts asking questions there is at least one person in this community who knows the truth, it seems they will do anything to keep the truth hidden.

My first book by Lisa Hall.
I really enjoyed how the pace in the of the book started slower and picked up the more you read it was engaging and I liked Lisa Halls writing style.
The story was intriguing but a little far fetched at times but it's a book it's not supposed to be perfect. I read a lot of thrillers so I could see where the story was heading, saying that the twist at the end was good. It could get a bit repetitive at points and I did skip over some parts as I felt like I had read them already.

I'd like to thank Joffe Books and Netgalley for an ARC.

The Day She Disappeared revolves around Becky, a true crime author, who returns to the island where she grew up after her mother passes away. A teenage girl, Violet Monroe, had disappeared from the island and Becky soon finds herself investigated what happened to her whilst living on an island full of people who want her gone.

After reading The Mysterious Double Death of Honey Black by the same author last year I was so excited to dive into this book especially as the premise sounded really intriguing. I liked the island setting and thought that the writing was very atmospheric however aside from this I found this book was a complete miss.

My main issue was with the pacing, particularly in the first half, as it was extremely slow and the story felt very repetitive. In the second half this did improve however by that point I was already slightly fed up of the book. I found the ending extremely predictable. I found Becky to be a very irritating narrator and it was frustrating how oblivious she was to everything happening around her. In general I found all the characters very unlikeable and none of them felt fully fleshed out.

Overall, this book definitely wasn't for me which is a shame as I thought the premise had a lot of potential.

This was solid. It wasnt what i expected, but not in a bad way. A good popcorn thriller that did what it came to do, entertain me. It had some good twists and was overall a fun ride.

Lisa Hall is a fantastic author and this novel didn’t disappoint. She skilfully weaves a twisted tale that draws you in slowly at first, then grabs you and has you hurtling to the end! I loved it!

Oooooooo do I love a thriller with a cliff hanger ending.

Lisa Hall tells the story of Becky, whom left her home island 16 years ago and after her absence she returns upon the death of her mother. Upon returning she stumbles upon the story of a missing girl, that while the entire town is convinced she ran away… she does not.

I enjoyed this story but something felt a little off for me. Probably the relationship between Megan and Becky, I don’t quite understand the dynamic nor do I understand how Becky has not talked to her mother in 16 years. Alas the story is still a good read

Wow, just wow! This thriller absolutely floored me! The storyline was a work of genius, expertly weaving together heart-stopping moments and skin-crawling eeriness that had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The characters were so richly drawn, I felt like I was right there with them, racing against time to unravel the mystery. And that twisty plot? Mind. Blown. The author's skillful misdirection had me questioning everything and everyone, keeping me in a state of delicious suspense. And the pacing? Lightning fast, like a runaway train that refused to slow down. Even when I thought I had a clue, the story threw me for a loop, leaving me gasping for breath. This book isn't just a thriller, it's a masterclass in storytelling that will leave you breathless and begging for more!

This book was a great read with so much mystery and second guessing throughout. There are so many untrustworthy and shitty people through this book, I felt tense every time Becky was alone with someone.

I loved the back stories of everyone and the real feel you read for the location and scenery.

I did guess the ending and was a bit disappointed by that.

Still a fun and twisty read!

3.5 stars

16 years ago, Becky left her hometown on Kirton Island to escape her past, then following a call from her childhood friend, she is forced to return. The locals, however, have not forgotten her or her mistakes, and she is looked down upon by many. Despite this, Becky keeps herself occupied with investigating the disappearance of another local girl, Violet, who most assume simply ran away, but Becky believes there is something more sinister going on at Kirton Island.

There were lots of twists in this book that kept me gripped, however it felt a bit long and repetitive due to the constant mention of how disliked Becky is by everyone.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers at Joffe Books for the ARC!

Rebecca (Becky) Gannon is a known author who found herself ostracized after a mistake she made in high school with the intent to never return to the island she once called home. However, Becky's mother passes away, and she finds herself returning in order to take care of her mother's estate - and follow an inspiring story of a missing local girl named Violet.

Becky feels in her heart that something happened to this girl everyone is claiming to be a runaway. Her suspicions are confirmed when Violet's sister Ivy contacts Becky to help her find her sister. It is now Becky's mission to help find out what exactly happened to Violet and hopes to help bring her back home.

Following the story deems to be difficult has Becky's past has not been forgotten by the locals of the island, and many want her to leave and never return. Becky never gives up on finding Violet, and would do anything to help find her- and hopes to atone for her past and give Ivy some closure. Has she been within Becky's reach this whole time?

Lisa Hall, writes an excellent thriller that will take you through all sorts of twists and turns, leaving you shocked at the end of the book.
