I *love* angel romance books and there are so few on the market these days. This one was delightful! Fingers crossed that Christi Barth writes a queer angel romance one day since she mentioned some of them having queer relationships.

Dnf at 50%, but I still think this book has a lot of potential and that it is not for me. The characters, their conversations, and the whole thing didn't appeal to me.

The third-person narrator was rather confusing at times, and I believe it would have been easier to read if there had been two points of view or if each chapter had been divided into Eva's and Gideon's pov.

Thank you Entangled Publishing, NetGalley and Christi Barth for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review

What a delightful five-star read. This is the second story in the Unlocking his heart series, but they really could be read as stand-alone, as they each tell a different person’s story. Gideon wasn’t always someone I liked, his personality just rubbed me the wrong way, but then Evangaline stands up to him and shows him a different side, and we get to know him better and that really shows us who he is. Evangaline was just sublime, watching her grow into her wings, proving herself and the love of her family really warmed me so much. Never have I wanted to scratch an itch so much, when you read the story I am sure you will want to scratch it too.

I really enjoyed the premise of this book. Overall it was funny and romantic. Great dynamics between the main characters. A great supporting cast of characters. While technically a sequel can be read as a standalone.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

First -the cover is pure gold! It actually made reading the book that much more exciting.

Second, this can totally be read as a standalone which was perfect b/c I went back and read book 1 after reading this one bc I liked it so much.

There was humor, a good deal of romance, lots of action, and great characters. I loved everything about this book

It was a new take on the mythology of angels, demons, witches, gods. I was totally not expecting [but in a good way] the addition of mermaids and flying unicorns. Can't wait for more in this series.

Full disclosure...
...I was just starting this one and encountered one of MANY funny moments that I wanted to share with family members, so I broke into a 15 minute explanation of the series as I've read it thus far to set the appropriate mood JUST to read the quote. Do I regret it? Nope, not even a little bit.

The entirety of the book contains moments, dialogue, and feelings you'll want to savor, share, and shout to the world! I loved the idea of a dark angel...that wasn't actually dark! Eva was an incredible character, both the woman and the dark angel, and when those two sides came together, even more remarkable. It was fun getting to know her as she got to know herself. Grant it, I would rather that she didn't experience all the, pardon the pun, but hell she did go through, including some pretty intense bullying, but she learns, she grows, and eventually can kick some pestilent behind (there's a inside joke there, but you'll have to read the book to uncover it!). The story behind the Fallen and how Lucifer wasn't actually running around the flames and brimstone with a forked tail and horns was enlightening. Whether it was meant to be or not, it was thought provoking honestly...I mean, he was one of the elite until jealousy stepped in, so who really knows? Anywho, theological discussions aside (hello...don't come at me, this is a work of fiction; enjoy it for what it is!), when Eva meets her grandfather for the first time, it played out perfectly. We saw the dark side of him, while we also saw the familial side, introducing the concept of something or someone not being entirely light or dark. Did I mention Gideon? Oh my stars, or should I say HEAVENS! While we got the oh so delicious Rhys in book one, Gideon is nothing to slouch at either. He comes off as a playboy, though completely upfront and honest with those he "encounters", but there's more to this golden haired nephilim than meets the eye...and while he and Eva are verbally duking it out, protesting doth too much, it was a pleasure waiting for them to get it together. 😏

All in all, an amazing read you won't want to miss! If you're a Paranormal Romance fan, or simply love a great story filled with whit and humor, all played out while trying to save the world, THIS IS THE ONE FOR YOU!

This was a fun romance between a dark angel and a half-angel who are trying to save the world from destruction. While they are an unlikely pair to work together and save the world, they end up realizing they are more compatible than they thought.

These books a absolute fire! They are stand alone books but the settings and the themes are similar. I loved it. I read this quickly because I couldn't stop reading it. These characters were well developed and so interesting. It was a 5 star read for me!

I can't give a full review of this because I didn't realize this was the second book in a series, so I didn't finish it because I felt lost throughout the first quarter of the book. I'd suggest making that more clear in the blurb because a lot of things don't make sense without reading the first.

Please ignore the star rating as I cannot submit the review without adding one.

A fun and sexy paranormal romance. Eva works as an actuary. Not the most entertaining job, but it's much better than her life was in her former home, Hell. She's a dark angel, unfortunately a powerless one, who just wishes to be human. Then she meets her newest clients, three sexy nephilim, and is thrown back into the magical world. Gideon and his brothers in arms work to save humanity from demons, but Eva provides an entirely new challenge. Someone is killing nephilim, and it's up to them to find the culprit. They might just succeed, if their feelings don't get in the way.

This was an enjoyable read. A protagonist coming into her strengths, high stakes danger, and a sexy leading man... what more can you ask for? I enjoyed the camaraderie between the nephilim, and the chemistry was great between the leads. Interesting angel and demon lore. I've not read the first entry in the series, but this one worked great as a standalone. I'll now be looking for the first book, and the next in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised just how heavy this leaned into more of the fantasy aspects. I really prepared myself for this to just have vague elemental pieces but focus more heavily on the romance and turns out it was balanced pretty well between the two.

Our characters are sassy and witty, full of humor, and suck you into the story. While I didn't realize this was a part of a series 'technically', it doesn't take away from anything since it can be read as a standalone. I had no trouble keeping up with what was happening even with the history of the angels and hell.

Thank you to the author and Entangled Puplishing for the eARC.

I did not realize this was a sequel when I got started. I intend to go back and read the first book and reread this.
However, I felt that it was pretty standalone and I had no problem connecting to the characters and enjoying the story.

It is a unique take on Lucifer and I thought that the story was well thought out and well written.

This was a really well written read. The dynamics between Eva and Gideon were hilarious and engaging. Definitely worth a read if you enjoy complicated characters and high stakes.

This was a NetGalley review.

📚BOOK REVIEW📚

Hell of an Angel by Christi Barth
(Book 2 in the Unlocking His Heart series)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice level: 🌶️🌶️/3
Genres: Paranormal Romance
Tropes: supernatural beings, good vs email, angels and devils, self discovery, reluctant allies

Dark angel Evangeline (Eva) left Hell in order to try to become a human due to being constantly bullied for her power (the ability to nullify other evil power). She has been trying to find a way to perform a spell to remove her power and turn her fully human.

Gideon is a Nepilium who has been fighting demons for a long time. As powerful underworld gatekeepers have begun to start dying, Gideon and his team know that extreme measures need to be taken.

When Gideon and Eva meet, he learns about her unique power. He realizes it may be the key to stopping the chaos that is occurring. They strike a tentative alliance; she will help him fight demons, and he’ll help her find a way to become human.

Throughout the story, they deal with each other (neither particularly likes the other) and their undeniable chemistry, and Eva learns more about her powers.

This story is dual-POV between Eva and Gideon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I thought the overall plot and concept were interesting, and there was lots of a room for unique world building. The FMC was strong and independent and didn’t really take sh*t from anyone, and the friendship she starts to develop towards the end with the other women in the house she’s staying at is really sweet as well.
This is written as a standalone in a series, but there was definitely a lot of confusion/glossing over details in the beginning that made the overall world building incomplete. It’s clear there are a lot of different paranormal creatures in this world, but we’re given very little detail about them. Additionally, there were plot related things that didn’t make sense and didn’t feel believable.
Overall, I struggled with this one a bit. I think if you like paranormal romance with some spice, you may enjoy this one. However, it might make more sense if you read the first book in the series (even though this one should technically stand on its own).
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for a copy of this to read ✨
‼️ book specific notes, may contain spoilers ‼️
-The dialogue is cringey
-some of the logistics of the Nephilim, the order of the Nepilim, and the angels doesn’t make sense. So they dropped out of the order, but they still have to do good? Like they feel like they have to do good? just unclear what rules they follow. It’s hard to tell if some of the stuff they’re talking about is a rule that they need to follow, or some sort of magical or paranormal push that makes them do these things.
-so the three nephilium ripped the wings off of a trainer when they had first joined the order. And they didn’t get in trouble? This was just fine?
-this book can supposedly be read as a standalone, but the author keeps making comments about things, and then not explaining them.
-it doesn’t fully make sense why Eva would have to move in with maisy
-this reads like “women written by men” but it’s written by a woman.
-“maybe we should all take off our balls and talk this through” . The sentiment that men can only be emotional when they’re not men, or without balls, is really annoying
-there’s mention of lots of different paranormal creatures but very little detail given ; world building is lacking overall
-lot of comments pitting men against women. It’s 2023, let’s stop this now
-I don’t think it was ever really made clear what the company metafora was, and if other people work there, and why they needed to get an audit.
-him rubbing his dirty hair on her coochie before eating her out is nasty
