Super fun read right before Halloween. The multiple pov thing let’s us get the vibes of each character. It has just enough romance and spice to keep you interested. I haven’t read the first book in this series but I am def going to!

This is an enemies to lovers with angels, demons, nephillim, and a quest to find out what exactly is going on in Hell and the world around them.

Evangeline Thayer wants to leave hell and become human but when a keeper is found dead what will happen to her plans? When she uncovers the truth will Gideon still want to be with her? Will she find her wings, uncover her true power?

Gideon Durant is a man of mystery and a guardian of his heart, will he finally meet someone who could truly capture his heart? Banded together with the few he can trust will leave him questioning much when he meets Evangeline. One moment will change his life together when a rescue becomes a mission.

Once again an enchanting read with spicy heat, lots of chemistry and interconnected characters that take you into a world behind the falls, to the heavens above and depths of hell.

This was 3.5 star read for me.
The book revolves around our dark angel Evangeline and her need to lose her *powerless* powers to become completely human, something she can not do on her own. That's where half-angel Gideon and his nephilim "brothers" come in, she needs their help to attain all the ingredients for the spell/ritual. But they want something in return, her help using her powers to find out who has been killing other nephilims.
I really enjoyed this read, it put it's own spin on demons and angels that I really liked seeing. I am a sucker for mythology and even though the concept of heaven and hell is more skewed towards religion this book did not center on that aspect and I really liked that about it.
Barth does a great job building the world for you without it feeling like some pages are description fillers. I would classify this as a slow burn since the tension between the main characters was definitely there from the start and it was more of a question as to who is gonna cross that line first sort of deal.
Although the book was advertised as a standalone and Evangeline our main character does center around all major plots, this book is the second in a series and I feel I would have enjoyed this a lot more if I had read the first book to start with.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC of this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Christi Barth was a new-to-me author when I took a chance on her book, Tempting the Prince. It was a solid hit for me, so with me currently being on a paranormal romance kick, I decided to give her a try again in this category with the first book in this Unlocking His Heart trilogy. The first two are interconnected standalone titles, but with some crossover characters, I highly encourage you to read both books in order because I think you’ll get the best experience that way.

While book one got off to a slow start for me, not so much with this one. I was invested in the story from the outset and cheered for Eva each time she stood her ground on who she was. And with the opposites-attract banter between her and Gideon, I truly enjoyed their journey. These two main characters had much growing to do, and I couldn’t have been happier with the outcome where this was concerned, especially with Gideon. The twists and turns their story took were more engaging and intriguing than in the first book, and I found myself loathe to put my Kindle down when life intruded.

Paranormal romance fans who love the opposites-attract trope, this one’s a must-read for you!

What can I say except there are very few authors that could make me want to read a story about “fallen angels”and “Nephilim” but Christi Barth is certainly one. I read the first book in this series and I enjoyed this one immensely. Eva has come to earth from hell where she was a dark angel. Gideon is a Nephilim which is half man, half angel and they are considered warriors for good. I really enjoyed their journey. The energy of the story, the pacing, it all worked for me. The romance and the HEA were very satisfying. My only beef is the next book in this trilogy is not due until next year! And I can’t believe I’m saying that about a paranormal romance!

4.5 stars really.

The publisher sent me an e-galley of this to read, and I wasn’t sure at first if I’d be able to fit it in. But I did and I am definitely glad I did, as I now want to go back and read the first one as well!

I loved all the different takes on angels, and fallen angels, nephilim, dark angels, and other supernatural creatures like mermaids, unicorns, etc. In a way it reminded me a bit of one of my favorite tv series, Supernatural. All the characters were interesting and added layers to the story. Definitely makes me want to see all three of our main nephilim characters get their own HEAs. I liked how there was a quest to go through in order to find out who was behind what had been going on, and that it tied into the first book, in that they didn’t realize what they’d worked on then actually was the start of a larger trail leading to a possible overthrowing of heaven. The different worlds that both Evangeline and Gideon come from were intriguing as well, and I look forward to probably learning more in the next book it sounds like.

Probably one of my main or only complaints with this was it being told in third person. I just feel like I could have gotten so much more from first person, or at least connected with the main characters more I guess. But that is a personal preference, and is why I only marked down a half a star on my blog rating.

980298I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own opinions.

I read some reviews before starting and got a little concerned that the book was part of a series. Luckily, that didn't matter.

Evangeline and Gideon's spats and just general connection are very entertaining to read. I'm happy that although she is a dark angel rebelling, she still has spice and attitude. I was worried she would start off meek, but out of the gate, she is a woman whom the reader cheers for.

Dark Angel Eva’s only power is thwarting the powers of evil, making her *wildly* unpopular in hell. She’s wanting to give up it up to live a human life as an actuary in Buffalo (personally I think she could have aimed a bit higher, but who am I to judge?)
Chance has her meeting a team of three Nephilim also in the area - first in a normal business setting and then a second time at The Falls in a supernatural capacity at the Watchtower they man behind the water.
Soon they’re striking up a deal to help each other out and - hopefully - avoid the apocalypse.

Angels - full, fallen, dark, half - and demons of all sorts.
Keepers, mermaids, horsemen of the apocalypse and who knows what else.
It’s a lot to try and keep track of, and I am assuming if I had already read the first book before this one it would have seemed much simpler. But as the rebel who consistently jumps in mid series that I am, at some point I decided to stop trying to keep it all straight and just enjoy the story - and I did for the most part.

I’m not going to lie, a not insignificant part of me wishes this was a why choose situation but the build up to Gideon and Eva getting together was good enough that I (mostly) let it go 😆
I was way more interested in the romance than the fighting between good, evil and the massive gray area between. With the story leaning heavier towards the latter, it wasn’t quite the hit for me that it could have been BUT if you’re in it for the plot, I think you’ll love the book!

Thanks to NetGalley and entangled for the Arc

I struggled getting through this book- I was confused a lot. The world building was hard to follow- a few other reviews said you really needed to read the other book to understand what was going on.

I didn’t connect with the characters very well. I thought they had good chemistry and witty banter- essentially the book had a ton of potential. As of right now, the story fell flat.

I plan to read the other book, and then re-review Hell of an Angel.

Thanks NetGalley and Entangled publishing for the opportunity!

HELL OF AN ANGEL - Christi Barth

#2 in the Unlocking His Heart romance series

WITTY BANTER - 4 stars

Plot - 4 stars - Eva knows that becoming human will be worth it since she's been bullied in Hell her whole life. She just needs some help with removing her power. Half-angel Gideon has been fighting demons a long time, but he’s never heard of a dark angel. But with an unknown evil on the loose and murdering Nephilim, Eva has a very useful skill. So, when a deal is struck, good and evil are working together, plus more.

Writing - 4 stars - Barth drew me in right from the first page. She writes in a casual and enjoyable way that makes even the scariest beings fun. The witty banter kept me laughing, and the hot scenes were...well...hot!

Characters - 4.5 stars - This is where the story shone for me. As always, Barth creates characters who are very relatable. Even when they are paranormal beings, they seem approachable and fun to be with. Eva is strong, yet she doesn't recognize her strength. She fits right in with the guys, and she isn't afraid to show them her insecurities. Gideon always plays the part of the playboy, but he's really a tough warrior who, quite literally, works on the side of good.

Title - 4 stars - The title tells us that angels and hell are involved, but the lightness of the words leads us in the direction of a comedy rather than a serious book.

Cover - 4 stars - The bold blue color draws the eye, the cute cartoony characters suggest that this is a light-hearted "hell" romance, and the cute font additions provide the final touch.

Overall - 4 stars - Eva and Gideon are both kind people who just want to do the right thing, and they're willing to work together to accomplish their goal to win out over evil. Eva doesn't appreciate her powers, but it's clear to everyone else that she has more power than she realizes, even if she doesn't want it. Gideon also is a very appealing character, definitely having more personality than just being a playboy. The reader can easily see that both (well, all) of the characters are full of goodness and willing to put their lives on the line for it. Yet they still take the time for fun banter. It was great to revisit with characters from the previous book. I look forward to the next (and last?) in the series to enjoy Zavier and Liss's story.

I was intrigued by the idea of a dark angel who grew up in hell but just wanted to be normal. I ended up liking Evangeline and wanting her to be happy. I struggled a bit more to connect with Gideon. I sympathized with this past being difficult but I felt like he was a bit two dimensional. I felt like they kind of just got together because that was what needed to happen for the story. That being said, I think this series is just a bit plot driven for me. Readers who want their characters to fall in love while saving the world this one is for you.

This book is said to be a standalone and I’ll have to disagree. While it is an individual romance for Gideon and Eva, and she does have her own adventure as the main plot of the story, it does directly tie into Maisy & Rhys from the first book and will be a part of the next story as well. As an interconnected book, readers should not start here to truly enjoy it. (I think that will help with a decent amount of the negative reviews.)

As a returning reader, I enjoyed getting to continue in this intriguing world that Barth has created – full of mythical creatures and a battle between good & evil. Her three heroes are great together, thru a shared traumatic past they have created a family. One that is slowly expanding as they meet and fall in love with strong women. It’s fun seeing these big, tough soldiers fall in love and learn to open up & share their lives with more than just each other.

Of the three, Gideon is the more outgoing and flirty. He’s working his way through the female population of both the normal and supernatural world … until he comes face to face with one that is not impressed by his charm. Some are not going to enjoy his attitude, but having gotten to know him before and then having his history laid out in this story it definitely becomes a lot more understandable.

Eva grew up as an entity of good in hell, which made her childhood … difficult. All she’s wanted is to get out and become normal, and now is her chance. She just needs to work with Gideon and the other Nephilim but something more is going on than they would ever have guessed. Add in an unwanted attraction to the playboy she’s been paired with, who has more going on than she would have ever guessed, and things quickly become very complicated

These guys have not had it easy (especially Zavier – and I cannot wait for his story!) but they still have big hearts and a deep seated need to protect. It makes for fun interactions as they start to realize that those big hearts have been stolen by spunky women with smarts, attitude, and guts. (Seriously, I cannot wait to get the last book!) It all happens in a world filled with angels & demons, mythical creatures, and Lucifer as the most fabulous, and proud, grandfather. I’m not 100% on my religion & mythology but I think that Barth does a good job of creating a complicated world full of all sorts of interesting creatures. And I can’t wait to see how she wraps it up. (Did I say that already? Well, I can’t.)

This book proved to be a captivating and thrilling romantic adventure! Eva, a former dark angel now working as an actuary, has made a daring escape from Hell to embrace life in the human world. Her journey takes a fascinating turn when she's tasked with conducting a risk analysis for a shipping company run by three irresistibly handsome half-angels. Yet, tensions flare as she butts heads with one of the partners, Gideon. Together, they find themselves in an unexpected alliance, fighting to avert an apocalyptic catastrophe.

I found the witty banter between the main characters to be both delightful and humorously entertaining. It lent a playful touch to the story, while seamlessly weaving in the classic enemies-to-lovers theme. This book delivers a perfect blend of romance, action, intrigue, and a clash of good versus evil in a battle to save the world.

3.5 stars

I went into this book not knowing it was book 2 in a series. I want to read book one, but do not feel like I was missing anything.
There is a ton of banter and supernatural elements to the story, but what can you expect when the MMC is half angel and the FMC is a dark Angel. And both characters live in Buffalo, NY.
Gideon lives life to the fullest while putting on a front in order to stop from being hurt again. And Evangeline isn’t really living her life, trying to be safe and ending up bored. I enjoyed the transitions from antagonistic, to reluctant allies, to lovers. The two really got to know each other and peel back the layers before getting together. I loved the mix in of suspense of the characters trying to solve a case and getting more than they bargained for. The development of the paranormal aspects and the relationship felt well done and not too fast.
I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to anyone wanting a little paranormal in their romances.

Thank you to Entangled Publishing for the early read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

As each story in Barth's Unlocking His Heart series progresses, I end up loving the characters more and more, and Hell of an Angel was no exception. Between Eva's complicated feelings about her dark angel power, Gideon's character development, and the return of all my favorite characters from the first book, I ended up enjoying this story from start to finish and had a hard time putting it down.

I loved Eva's character arc throughout this book. What started as a plan to rid herself of her dark angel power and become fully human ended up being a much more complicated story about self-discovery and acceptance. While not quite as complex, Gideon certainly had quite a bit of character development as well as he set his sights on Eva and reevaluated his goals in life.

I loved the Nephilim-fueled plot of Imperfect Angel, and I loved how Barth built on that world and expanded on it in this book. I found Barth's writing to be engaging, with just the right balance between action and character arc. I loved the larger plot involving the potential apocalypse, and I can't wait to see what impact the first two books' plots will have on the next story. Gideon and Eva had a fun, entertaining story, and I can't wait to see what's coming for the third and final Nephilim in Christi Barth's Unlocking His Heart series.

Christi Barth write such FUN romance books. I know this is book 2 of a series, but they are completely stand alone books and I have not read book 1. I loved the premise of evil and goodness working together and especially loved the chemistry and BANTER between the two main characters. I laughed and blushed and generally had a ball reading this book. It is perfect for spooky paranormal fun!

Hell of an Angel is perfect for lovers of the TV shows Supernatural and Lucifer, and for anyone who loves angel/demon mythology.
This story follows Evangeline, a dark Angel, who is a descendant of Lucifer in Hell, and 3 Nephilim soldiers- Gideon, Zavier, and Rhys. Eva had a choice in becoming good or evil, and became a good dark angel. But she has a power that some deem dangerous and she feels is worthless. She left Hell to come to Earth and lie low, play at being human. She meets the Nephilim soldiers by accident when she lands their business account as their actuary.
Gideon is a rakish playboy. He hasn’t tried to hide that he sees women as a fun time, and he has no time for a relationship. But Eva makes him start to question his self imposed rules.
When they are asked to help find whoever is killing Keepers and their Nephilim protectors, they are thrown into a conspiracy that has them questioning everything they know about good and evil.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I thought Evangeline and Gideon's story was fun, cute and clever. Lots of witty banter, spicy sparks, thrilling action, juicy drama, edge of your seat suspense and jaw on the floor twists pull you in quickly and easily and have sitting pretty in your happy reading place.

When you don't know if you should root for the hero or the villain or really who's good and who's bad root for the dark angel and love.

I fell in love with these characters, I rooted for them, I cried for them, and when it was over I needed more of them.

I've read plenty of books about starcrossed lovers, angels falling in love with humans, demigods trying to change the course of the world, and the destruction that can happen when the powers that be aren't happy, this book blows away everything I've read before and I'm so happy about it.

I'm not going to say much other than read this book, it is the perfect combination of fantasy and reality, the perfect way to question what's good and what's evil, and the perfect way to tell Evangeline's story.

Thank you to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this E-Book, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
