A well written, well researched non-fiction middle grade read!
So many fascinating biology facts about the monarch life cycle in the first chapter to hook in the reader. Along with biology, the book explores the history of scientists solving the mystery of monarch migration. The author gives many actionable suggestions for the reader to get involved with making an impact in their community to improve the environment and help the monarch population thrive.
Would recommend to all science loving middle grade and young adult readers, ages 12+ - the book even has a glossary to help expand scientific vocabulary!

If you are interested in learning more about monarch butterflies, I recommend The Monarch Effect. While the intended audience is middle grade, the book was engaging from beginning to end. It had a nice balance of a narrative story and science. The book also includes additional citizen science organizations for readers to explore such as Monarch Watch and Jounrney North. There are also many photos and maps that add another element for readers to enjoy.
In this book, Church covers many topics including the history of scientific discovery, life cycle, migration, and biological characteristics of monarchs. I learned so many new things and have a newfound appreciation for these amazing butterflies.
Topics that I was particularly interested in were:
-conservation
-habitat management
-Indigenous knowledge and science
-interspecies ethnography
The Monarch Effect is one my few 5 star ratings of the year!

I had absolutely no idea the depth of the Monarch butterfly but I was so excited to read more! This is a well-research and well-written piece that gives so much valuable information on the lifecycle and lifestyles of Monarch butterflies.

I am always looking for nonfiction nature books to add to my children's library that allow them to really explore a topic in depth, and this book is perfect for that. There is a lot of information in here for children to learn! My children (at 4 and 5) are still a bit young for this one, but it will be one that we add to our library as they grow.

I used to love spotting monarchs with my dad while growing up in the Northeast. Now, it's a very rare occurrence. The Monarch Effect is a mystery of a different sort: this book examines the life cycle of the monarch butterfly and its impact on the environment. I appreciated the advanced information available in this book; it does not talk "down" to students while still being at an accessible level. For budding biologists--recommended for purchase at middle level.

The book was so cool! I learned so much about monarch butterflies, and I really enjoyed the easy to read format it was written in. I'm so excited to be able to use my newfound knowledge of monarch butterflies!

Thank you for the opportunity to review the ARC of this book.
Our twins are almost 6 and love watching the entire life cycle of the monarch butterfly. While some of the science stuff was a little
Advanced for them, they loved learning more about monarchs.
This is a great book for the budding scientist in your house.

Thank you for the opportunity to preview this title before publication. The Monarch Effect is a fascinating look at the plight and promise of the monarch butterfly. Perfect for middle grade readers interested in the natural world, it covers how early scientists tracked monarchs, discovered their migration routes, and uncovered their overwintering grounds. It also covers their feeding practices, protective measures against prey, and overall development. The book doesn’t shy away from discussing the challenges of sustainability, including how protecting monarch overwintering grounds has led to unanticipated impacts on communities already using the land. Includes some images and extensive back matter. Recommended.
