WHAT HAPPENED TO NINA? That’s what Detective Matthew Wright and Officer Sarah Jane Reid are trying to find out in Dervla McTiernan’s thriller that will keep you engaged from beginning to end.

Simon Jordan and Nina Fraser appear to be the perfect couple. They’ve been together for quite some time and are deeply and madly in love. When Simon schedules a romantic getaway on his family’s estate in Vermont, all seems well. When the trip is over, Simon returns home alone. His story as to where Nina is just doesn’t add up. He says they had an argument, and he left and returned home and she was fine when he departed. But what happened to her after that?

While Simon’s wealthy family gathers round to insulate and protect him, Nina’s family gathers round to try to find out where she is. Everyone seems to have secrets and only part of the story. Wright and Reid investigate, they are blocked at every turn by the Jordan’s PR team and lawyers. They continue look into Nina’s whereabouts and slowly begin to peel back the layers of lies, deceit, and misdirection.

I really enjoyed the author’s writing style. I could hear the music blasting through Simon’s headphones and could feel the money changing hands from Simon‘s family. If the story was not so reminiscent of recent events, I may have given it five stars, however, it just seemed to be too soon and too close to real life events.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for this ARC opportunity. All opinions are my own and given voluntarily.

Dervla McTiernan is a favorite author, and this new standalone is a winner! Shifting perspectives of people who know and suspect different things as everyone tries to find out, as the title says, what happened to Nina, who went on a trip with her boyfriend and hasn't returned. Not a hugely twisty story but one with a solidly moving plot and excellent moments of tension.

I enjoyed this fast paced thriller about a missing girl named Nina. I love reading true crime stories whether they are fiction or nonfiction. I thought the author Dervla McTiernan did a wonderful job of writing a propulsive plot and describing feelings and thoughts for both sides of the families involved in this missing person case. This book is full of tense moments and will have you on the edge of your seat guessing what happened to Nina.
I received an advanced electronic (eARC) copy from @thoughtsfromapage Early Reads Program. Thank you to Cindy Burnett and publisher William Morrow books. I appreciated the opportunity to preview this book.

Based on Gabbie Petito, the woman who was visibly abused by her boyfriend, disappeared, and became a national story about how we react when a seemingly innocent couple becomes a national tragedy. Social media takes its own toll and the uncovered truth becomes exactly what we presumed- he did it and committed suicide.

What Happened to Nina has similar premise, but is taken from both sets of parents and the detective tasked to solve the case.

Nina’s parents are your in of the mill Vermont parents, Simons are incredibly rich with lawyers who can “fix” perspectives to make it seem like Simon is an all around American boy who would never dare hurt a fly though by the first chapter, we know exactly what has happened.

On one hand. I wanted to know what was going to happen, as it’s an easy read. However, the writing was just so bad and bland I could barely stomach it. Seriously, Some basic writing I’ve encountered in the past six months.

From the first chapter, I was hooked! This was gripping, emotional and so hard to read at times but I couldn’t put it down. It felt as realistic as any true crime book and reminded me so much of the Gabby Petito and Kristin Smart cases. It focused on the relationships and reactions of the families involved and especially how far a family would go to protect their own. You can completely feel the hopelessness and anguish throughout the search for answers and justice. Heartbreaking and horrific, it is a must-read far any crime fiction fan!

4.5 Stars: All the rave reviews for this one are legit; from literally the first page, I could not put this book down.

I’m still not sure how to characterize this one, perhaps part family drama, part mystery, and definitely part “ripped from the headlines” type of story.

It is a deep dive into the disappearance of a family’s much loved daughter, and how the media invades the lives of everyone involved, in a really sick and twisted way. It made me rethink any article I ever read about Gabbi Petito’s disappearance, and made me feel revulsion for myself and our media for the coverage of stories like these.

My only reservation on this one is this…I do wish this Irish writer, whose other mysteries I have also loved, would have addressed the missing white woman syndrome. They get such disproportionate coverage in comparison to women of color, particularly missing indigenous women, and it seems like it was a prime opportunity to address that?

I finished this one in 24 hours, as did many others, not being able to look away from the train wreck I knew was coming.

Thanks to William Morrow for an advanced copy of What Happened to Nina? by Dervla McTiernan. I loved this book and it as such a quick read!

From the first moments, I was hooked on this book and finding out what happened to Nina. The book starts with Nina and her boyfriend Simon going away for a few days to his family's cabin but when she doesn't return home her mom knows something is wrong. Her parents know Simon is hiding something and are suspicious. His parents hire fancy lawyers and a PR firm to dig up everything they can find on Nina and her family. As everyone chooses sides, how far will her parents to go to find out what happened to their daughter?

I read this book in a few hours - I couldn't put it down. It was fascinating and a little bit of a slow burn, but I loved the ending.

If you're a domestic suspense fan you'll enjoy this book!

A compulsive thriller, driven largely by its structure - told from multiple perspectives. While the narrative is framed around a missing woman, the larger impact of the story stems from its exploration of familial relationships. I appreciated having to both think and empathize as a reader. Brava, McTiernan!

What Happened to Nina? ~ Dervla McTiernan
Pages: 336
Genre: Mystery/Suspense

Gist: Nina and Simon head to his house in Stowe for a weekend away but when Simon returns and Nina doesn’t, her family knows that something is terribly wrong. Simon has an explanation but the detectives in charge of the investigation aren’t buying it. Nina’s parent are all consumed with finding their daughter and Simon’s parents are intent on proving his innocence. But one question still remains - what happened to Nina?

Thoughts: So a little story before I get into it, I got an email with the link to read this one and I deleted the email. First impression - I thought the cover was awful. “Judge a book by its cover” was personified here! Then I saw a fave review for it - worried that I judged too quickly, I requested it on Netgalley. Best decision let me tell you!

Hints of the Gabby Petito murder ring true here - so I loved the true crime vibe. Alternating between parents and detective, we get the full range of suspicion, defense, devastation, and fear that any parent might face knowing their child is missing OR their child harmed someone else. It’s a bit procedural, a lot dramatic, but mostly it’s a story of the lengths a parent will go for their child.

Could not put it down and it’s lingered with my since finishing. I will be telling everyone who will listen to read this one. Absolutely loved - and learned my lesson to really try not to judge a book by its cover!

What a guilty pleasure to be able to devour a good story. It doesn’t happen often with me, but I cheated on my bedtime to read, One. More. Chapter! I couldn’t put it down and although this is not truly a whodunnit, because you know who did. It had a few twists I didn’t see coming. I can’t imagine what the parents of someone who goes missing must be like, but it was plausible that they would react like these parents do. Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Cannot wait to read the author’s other works.

What Happened to Nina is much like the real life story of Gabby Petito.

College students Nina and Simon take some time for themselves at a remote cabin owned by his parents. When the time comes for them to come back home Simon arrives alone. Her parents are unable to reach Nina and report her missing.

The story mainly focuses on the two families involved. Some of their actions/reactions are reasonable and some are not. Social media also plays a big roll in the book. Unfortunately, some of the things that happen as a result of that are very true to life.

I liked the story and found it interesting. I would have liked a little more backstory of Nina's parents. The amount of info we are given on Simon was the perfect amount to set up the story and keep the suspense going. Simon's parents are portrayed as the rich snobs that they are.

I would recommend to readers who like a true crime feel to their books.

Thanks to netgalley and William Morrow for the arc.

We get a brief glimpse of Nina before we start to wonder What happened to Nina? Nina and her boyfriend Simon head to his parents second house in Stowe to spend time together but Simon comes back home without her. Simon says he left her alive but did he? From the first small glimpse of their relationship Simon gave me the ick. This story was well written and keeps you turning the pages to find out what did really happen to Nina and who is going to pay for it. The answers may surprise you. 4.5 stars but rounded down as always. Highly recommend to anyone who likes a thriller. Thank you to netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I’ve enjoyed McTiernan’s police procedurals but her standalones, not so much. What was interesting about this one was the inspiration from the Gabby Petito story. Telling the story primarily from the perspective of both sets of parents was an interesting spin. The way that social media has the ability to both help and hinder crime solving and to also skew the public’s perception of the individuals involved is disturbing. How do you find the truth with so much misinformation and vitriole circulating so quickly and poisoning people’s minds away from objectivity?

So it was interesting for those reasons but I also found it pretty implausible, and I don’t have a lot of patience for unbelievable plot twists. Some of the parents’ behavior was understandable but the amount of terrible choices for which they were able to avoid accountability was mindboggling. I also get frustrated when the detective in the case is viewed as, and somewhat presented as, less competent than the vigilantes (in this case, the parents). Finally, I just didn’t love the writing style. I think I prefer more literary thrillers most of the time so the surfacey writing just didn’t hit me right.

I can see there being a lot of people who will love this but it was just average for me.

Nina and her boyfriend, Simon, head out for a weekend of hiking, aiming to rekindle their relationship amid nature. But when only Simon returns, the question everyone's asking is: What happened to Nina? This riveting, ripped from the headlines novel plunges us right into the middle of the story, but I want to be clear - this is not a mystery. From the very beginning, we're pretty much aware of what has happened, who has done it, and why. The real story here is watching the events unfold against a backdrop of family loyalty, media frenzy, and a gripping investigation. The story, told through the eyes of Nina's mother, Nina's stepfather, Simon's mother, Simon's father, and the detective on the case, is a harrowing tale of the way that violence can impact us all.

This book is a deep dive into the complexities of human relationships. Through the turmoil of the search for Nina, we see two families pitted against each other—Nina's, desperate for answers, and Simon's, protective and wary of the mounting allegations against their son. What sets this book apart is its ability to mirror the real-world spectacle that often surrounds such tragic events, but also comment effectively in a way that leaves it feeling singular. The armchair detectives, the viral hashtags, the spiraling conspiracies - it's all too familiar.

If you're a fan of dark and complex stories that make you examine the darker facets of human nature, this book is an absolute must-read. By the end, my heart was going to burst for Nina - and, let's be honest here, Gabby Petito. 5 stars.

From the opening chapter to the very last page, I could not put this book down. College students Nina and Simon go to his parents’ vacation home in Stowe, Vermont for a quick getaway, but only Simon comes home. Reminiscent of Gabby Petito’s case, this story follows Nina’s and Simon’s families as they grapple with the consequences of what happened at the remote cabin. I don’t want to say too much about the plot except it unfolds in unpredictable ways. To what lengths will a parent go to find out what happened to their child? To what lengths will a parent go to protect their child from the consequences of their actions? I recommend this book with content warnings for domestic abuse and control, violence, and attempted assault. Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for the opportunity to read this ARC.

When I received this ARC, I was convinced this was a non-fiction “true crime” novel. I was pretty shocked when I realized that it was fiction written like true crime. I’m a fan of crime fiction, and this story did not disappoint. Nina and Simon have been boyfriend and girlfriend for years, and it was assumed that once they finished college, they would marry. It was all going to plan until Simon became jealous, petty, and angry. He took it out on the beautiful Nina, which drove a giant wedge between their love, eventually resulting in Nina’s demise. The story follows police procedures and rich vs. not-so-rich shenanigans. Simon is the only child of wealthy parents who will do ANYTHING to help their son, including a massive smear campaign against Nina and her parents. I am not exaggerating when I say that I started this book and did not stop till I finished it. What a compelling story and what a fascinating look at murder. I originally heard about this book through the New York Times, and I was pleased to receive an advanced copy. This was a five-star riveting read. Nina and Simon seem to everyone the perfect couple but there are hidden secrets, and the story takes off when Nina does not come home from a trip that the pair took together. There are three story lines to follow. One, where and what has happened to Nina? Two, you follow Nina's family as they struggle with the unknown and using all resources to find Nina. Third, Simons family who has the money and resources to draw on when they start to realize that Simon could be a suspect and they will use anything to protect their son. This story keeps you locked in to see what happens next and how far a family will go to protect one of their own. The author does a great job weaving on three-story lines together. You will not be disappointed in this story.

What Happened to Nina is a story that grabbed me from the beginning and wouldn't let me go until I read the haunting last paragraph. To say I loved it and highly recommend the book is an understatement!

American readers will see shades of inspiration from the tragic case a couple of years ago of Gaby Petito and Brian Laundrie, two young lovers who took to the road, but only Brian returned. There is a similar scenario at the opening of this story, but then the tales diverge. We take a deep dive into the two families, and two sets of parents who will do whatever it takes to protect their child. All the characters are so distinctly drawn and the reader feels like they are literally in their skin.

A lot of the story is predictable because we, the reader, knows what has happened, but this in no way lessened my enjoyment of the story. I was on edge, waiting to see what would happen next and what Nina's parents would discover. There are a few very unexpected plot turns near the end of the book. This story seemed very different from some of the ones I've read in McTiernan's past catalogue of books, but it was a winning formula for me. This is one of my favorite books of 2024 so far!

Thank you to NetGalley, Dervla McTiernan and William Morrow Books for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you William Morrow, #partner, for the advanced copy of What Happened to Nina? in exchange for my honest review.

This is the second book I’ve read by Dervla McTiernan and I cannot recommend her books enough! I was thrilled that Cindy from Thoughts from a Page picked this one as an early read for her Patreon group because that meant we got to chat with the author and I loved hearing Dervla give us some insight into this book.

Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down! I loved how the author took a missing case, one that is literally ripped from the headlines, and turns it upside down. Yes, this one is quite similar to the Gabby Petito case, but believe me when I say this is not the same story.

While this is a missing person story, what makes it so unique is that once it is established that Nina is truly missing, the narrative shifts focus to those left in the aftermath of the event and how they are struggling to find answers. We see Nina’s parents willing to do anything to find their daughter and then you have Simon’s parents who are willing to do anything to protect their son at all costs. We see the lengths these parents are willing to go for their child and the feelings of helplessness they feel as they wait to see what happens next.

I also appreciated how the author explored how social media can be used to manipulate the case and public opinion. I never really thought about how this happens in everyday life, but to see it happening in this book was maddening!

I cannot recommend this book enough! It’s so cleverly plotted and her characters come alive on the page. Heck, she even had me feeling just a little sympathy for a character I really wanted to dislike! That’s talent!!!
