Since AI became a big part of our lives, I’ve been both amazed and a little uneasy about what it can do. It’s changing industries, sparking creativity, and making life more convenient. But there’s a downside—AI-generated misinformation is spreading fast, making it harder to tell what’s real and what’s fake.
That’s where Deep Disinformation comes in. This book is a straightforward guide to understanding and fighting back against AI-driven deception. Using real examples and clear explanations, the author shows how to spot fake videos, images, and stories before they mislead you. More importantly, it lays out practical steps to push back against the spread of false information—something we all need to be aware of in today’s digital world.
This isn’t just about fake news—it’s about defending truth and the right to real information. Deep Disinformation is a must-read. Don’t let AI-driven lies fool you—stay informed and keep facts alive.

In the age of rapidly advancing technology, where reality and illusion blur, Ashley Parker Owens delves into the murky depths of disinformation in her thought-provoking book, "Deep Disinformation: Can AI-Generated Fake News Swing an Election?" Owens, an Appalachian writer, poet, and artist, masterfully navigates the treacherous waters of AI-generated content, exposing its potential impact on our world.
The book opens with a chilling anecdote: a father resurrected through a "deepfake," a digital manipulation that brings the deceased back to life. Grothaus, the son who experiences this eerie reunion, grapples with conflicting emotions—relishing the reunion while horrified by the rupture it creates in reality. This split reaction sets the tone for Owens' exploration of deepfakes.
Owens meticulously dissects the mechanics of AI-generated disinformation. She examines how artificial intelligence can create deceptive news, videos, and photos, blurring the lines between truth and fabrication. Through chapters like "Who Creates Disinformation?" and "How Does AI Work?," she unravels the intricate web of manipulation that threatens our sense of trust and reality.
What sets "Deep Disinformation" apart is its comprehensive research. Owens provides readers with extensive resources, including news articles, YouTube videos, podcasts, and websites. These resources empower users to discern whether content has been artificially generated—an essential skill in our digital age.
I found Owens' insights invaluable. Her unbiased exploration of AI's power to deceive and manipulate information serves as both a resource and a warning. Whether you're a journalist, a concerned citizen, or simply curious about the intersection of technology and truth, this book is a must-read.
In a world where deepfakes lurk in the shadows, "Deep Disinformation" shines a spotlight on the urgent need for media literacy and critical thinking. Owens reminds us that the battle against disinformation is not just about technology—it's about safeguarding our democracy and preserving our way of life.

This book is a grand tour of how AI is being (and will be) used to create an endless stream of (mostly political) Fake News in an unyielding attempt to sway elections. This coming barrage of disinformation will replace the fake news that we already get every day from the MSM. In our journalism school's students have been taught to generate what is called "advocacy" journalism, instead of reporting the facts and the truth. Now these misguided editors and reporters will be replaced by AI bots that will carry on this deceitful trend. Everyone must read this book and learn how they are being misled.

This is all about artificial intelligence (AI) and how it can be used to create fake articles and videos to sway peoples opinion on different topics. It goes into what AI is, how it can be used to create these things, and possible ways it can be combated.
I did like sections of this. The explanation of AI was well done and it’s history in creating fake news and deepfakes was interesting and well written.
I have deep reservations with how it seeks to combat these things though. There is a heavy emphasis on cooperation with people with opposite views to you, which you wouldn’t think would be a bad thing til you see what those opposite views are. When the opposite views to me are that vaccines are a conspiracy, climate change is a hoax, and queer people are either evil or mentally ill I have a hard time trying to see a middle ground with them.
Deepfakes and fake news are a real problem that does need to be addressed. Hopefully we can find a way to identify it and be able to do that more easily in the future.

In a world where AI and fake news can have real world consequences I think this book is sorely needed and although I found some of it overwhelming and hard to get through I still believe it’s should be a must read for all registered voters. People are quick to take headlines from social media and want to have real arguments and heated debates over what they believe the statement meant now that we have this to contend with along with the lies and propaganda if you sit and think about it it all becomes overwhelming this is a great book to arm your self for things that are real and not real and always investigate the unbelievable. I want to thank the author and Net Galley for my free art copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
