I took a lot of reference for one of my friend. He is starting some leather project and I wanted to had to his ideas.
I think the step by step are practical ans also the best option for those projects. Sometimes we can of find ideas on the internet, but miss the important step with it.

I truly love that I was given the opportunity to review this book. Recently I was telling my husband that I wanted to making things out of leather but didn’t know how to do everything. I did make a multi tool sheath for my husband years ago it turned out okay he still uses it today just wish I knew some of the things this book has could of add a little more to it.

I enjoyed the patterns and the amount of detail that went into this book photos, the basic, and getting down to how to do different things depending on what you are working on…definitely going to buy this book.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

Projects in Leather is an accessible and appealing leathercrafting tutorial project book full of well designed projects by Tony and Kay Laier. Due out 5th Feb 2024 from Fox Chapel, it's 96 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

The thorough introduction (~13% of the content) includes tools, materials, leather definitions and types, selecting materials, setup and more. The following chapters include techniques: tooling, dye/coloring, braiding/knots lacing and stitching, and hardware. The tutorial chapters include 22 full projects, happily including several tutorial chapters which will be of particular interest to re-enactors/SCAdians, and other history buffs. There are a lot of nice tooling patterns in the book including a really attractive and versatile acanthus design which will have all the SCAdians swooning.

Each of the projects includes a list of tools & materials, recommended leathers, measurements, and step-by-step cutting and assembly instructions. The photos and illustrations are clear and easy to follow. It's nice that the templates for each pattern are included in the actual chapter, not at the end of the book, so there's no flipping back and forth and hunting for the correct pieces. That was a big bonus. Tooling designs are *clearly* illustrated and action photos are not blocked or figleafed with tools or hands in the way. The writing is clear, simple, and accessible.

Many of these projects are small, so readers can use up even the smallest scraps. The measurements are given in US standard with metric units in parentheses. Materials are easily sourced from a well stocked crafts shop, or online. There is no index or resource lists, but it doesn't present any difficulties. This is a nice resource for beginning to intermediate leatherworkers, or more general crafters looking to expand their materials repertoire to leather.

Five stars. Just making one of the included projects would save enough over retail to cover the price of the book.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

A beautiful book full of gorgeous designs and detailed step by step instructions with photos to take your leather projects to the next level. No more bland and boring leather items once you have mastered the skills that are taught here. If only all craft books were like this one!

I'm a newbie with leather crafting. The tools look intimidating, so I appreciate that this book has lots of photos explaining the tools. This book also has some project ideas. I can honestly say that I'm feeling more inspired to take up leather crafting.

Thank you very much to the authors, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me the privilege of reviewing this book. This was a very cute book, with beautiful graphics and patterns, extremely well detailed. I wish more could have gone into very very beginner steps, but all around it was one of the better diy guide books I've ever read and not one that would fall by the wayside as times change!

I absolutely loved this workbook. I found the information in each section to be right in line with what I learned from going to the local leather shop for classes. What I don't remember was advice about needing to really work your tools when it comes to thicker leathers. I had difficulty with hitting things hard enough to make my hardware set, as well as having difficulty with making the holes to get the snaps to stay on.

I really appreciated the thorough lessons on tooling, using the swivel knife, and then the step by step guides for making the projects at the end. Having the lessons at the front helps to build up the knowledge of the techniques and then the application of these techniques was directly reflected in the projects. Excellent book.

This is a great book if you want to make beautiful, elaborate leather crafts. My teenage son likes using leather scraps to make things and I was hoping for some ideas for him but he is more interested in simple construction and this is for really fancy stuff with lots of tools, materials and steps. The products are fabulous if that’s what you are looking for.

I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.

Pros: Leatherwork is one of my dad's favorite hobbies. I was interested to read this book both to learn more about his hobby and to see if this might be a book to gift to him. I thought this book was great for beginners with detailed information about tools and basic techniques. I think people like my dad who are experienced leatherworkers will enjoy the projects section where they might be inspired by new ideas.

Cons: None that I can think of!

Thank you to NetGalley and Fox Chapel Publishing for the opportunity to read this book.
