Thank you to Net Galley for access to this book. This was a very interesting read for me. While I am wary of "football" books, my hope for this was that it was less about football than about people who might play football, like the movie The Blind Side.
I think this was more about people than football. I learned a little about the sport (not my favorite, but that's all right). The author did a reasonably good job at letting the readers get to know the characters and the history at the time. There are not that many books that give you some of the history of the 1960s and the Vietnam war, which this did. I love historical fiction and that is why I picked up the book, to be honest. I also got a glimpse of Hawaii at the time (as close as I have ever gotten). I also think the author did a good job at letting the characters reveal social issues versus lecturing the reader and characters' different perspectives were revealed.
I would definitely read other books by this author in the future. The only reason that it was a four vs. five star read is that I thought it went on a little too long in some parts and could have used a bit of tightening up, however, it was a very engaging and worthwhile read.
