I have several students with incarcerated parents and this book is hopeful, realistic, and sensitively written. It will be a good addition to my classroom library.

More books like this are necessary for building empathy in an empowering way for children with caregivers who are incarcerated. It is also highly beneficial for the children who see themselves reflected in the characters.

Nelson's father is currently incarcerated, so he writes him letters to let him know what's going on in his life, as well as how the family is doing. He talks about how things are different without him, and he can't wait for him to come home. Nelson decides he is going try and fix up the Chevy so that they can ride together when he gets home.

The author includes a guide to writing a letter to an incarcerated loved one.

I LOVED this book. The main character is a child who writes letters to his dad in prison. Unfortunately, this can be relatable to kids. The main character is still able to have a connection with dad even though he is not there. You can feel how much he misses his dad. He tells dad everything he has missed, both good and bad. Then he has the experience of visiting his dad in jail. The tips at the end of the book are helpful and there are talking points to help guide discussions. 5 stars are not enough!

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read the ARC for this book. This was a wonderful book that shares the family's experience of having a family member incarcerated. It highlights the challenges they encounter and how their lives change as the result of havng a family member absent. This is a meaningful book for young people.

This was a really good book, looking at children with parents who are incarcerated. Nelson is constantly writing his dad, giving him updates on himself and the family. They go through all the process, sentencing, and times he missed. There are great three end pages where it talks about how to/good ways to write your family that happens to be incarcerated.
