Sarah Pekkanen’s latest novel, House of Glass, is a bingeable, twisty domestic thriller. Full of family secrets, this one will keep you guessing and looking over your shoulder until the end.

Stella Hudson is a best interest attorney who assists in determining where children are placed during custody battles. She always handles cases for older children, until her mentor Charles asks that she take on Rose Barclay as a client. Rose is a nine-year-old who witnessed the tragic death of her nanny and is now experiencing traumatic mutism. Charles knows that Stella has personal experience with traumatic mutism, as it happened to her as a child, and feels that she is the best person for the case. Rose’s wealthy parents, Beth and Ian, are in the midst of a divorce following the tragedy and both want sole custody of Rose. As Stella tries to bond with Rose to figure out who should receive sole custody, she knows that the nanny’s mysterious death plays a huge role in the process. When Beth and Ian’s actions spark doubt in Stella, coupled with the grandmother Harriet’s behavior…Stella begins to dig deeper into the nanny’s death. As she uncovers more details, strange events that threaten her safety begin to occur, and she realizes that everyone is hiding secrets, including Rose. No one is safe in the Barclay estate, especially Stella.

This was a quick and enjoyable thriller to read. I was confident that I knew who was responsible for the nanny’s death, but I was wrong. That twist surprised me, and I love when a thriller does that. Everyone had a secret and I liked how the plot came together at the end. I also liked how Stella had a personal connection to Rose’s situation, and how handling her case forced her to confront her own past. Overall, it’s a solid choice to pick up and binge one weekend!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this eARC, in exchange for my honest review.

House of Glass had me hooked from the very first pages. In this story, we meet Stella, a lawyer who is trying to decide which parent 9-year old Rose Barclay should live with after her parents' divorce. I did not know who to trust in this story. Pekkanen creates an atmosphere of distrust around the Barclay family -- especially Rose. Is she a child who is traumatized, or is something more sinister going on with her? I really enjoyed that this did not seem far-fetched or over the top, but slowly unraveled itself throughout the novel. I wanted to know what was really going on in the Barclay house and what really happened when their nanny, Tina, died. Pekkanen did a wonderful job tying everything together and left me wondering how I didn't see what a few of the characters were hiding. This was also a quick read, with short chapters, that made the story fast-paced.

Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and the author for the e-ARC to review. This book releases on August 6th!

4stars!
First, special thank you to St. Martin’sPress and MacMillan Audio for the complimentary files for review.
Stella Hudson is a recently divorced lawyer appointed to be the counsel for nine-year old Rose whose custody is caught between a nasty divorce of her parents- the Barclays. The mother Beth-a billionaire heiress, married a blue-collar self rise to money, landscaping worker husband Ian who happened to have an affair with Rose’ nanny, Tina, who was found dead at their property following a tragic fall from one of the giant glass windows of the upper floor of this majestic million dollar Barclay house.
Stella’s goal is to investigate and come up with a recommendation with the best interest for Rose for the court to base of who gets the custody. By doing this, Stella was spending time with everybody close to Rose. However, everybody seem to be hiding a lot of things from her and everyone have obvious motives to get rid of the dead nanny.
I had high expectations when I started reading this book. I can’t say I did not like it because that is untrue. I may have not hit the mark to satisfy my expectation but I like the book enough. The classic whodunit plot, eerie home scenarios and highly intriguing characters just simply makes a thriller story well packaged. Our main character has baggage to unpack on her own and that also tends to distract her from getting the best possible outcome on Barclay’s case. I love however, that it has a good ending!
The audio was narrated by Laura Bennati. The delivery was spectacular! I recommend this book, it is a fast read, good thriller vibes and you can’t get wrong with either reading or listening!

“Evil isn't merely a word. It's a tangible, dimensional thing. Once it homes in on a target its malevolent arc of electricity affixes to its prey.” Was evil behind the death of the nanny, or was it an unfortunate tragic accident? If evil was the force behind the horrific event, who was the catalyst? All is not as it appears in the Barclay household, Divorcing parents, a feeble grandmother, and a traumatized mute child live in a world of secrets and deception. I enjoyed the protagonist, Stella as she navigated this mysterious family. This character-driven story kept me intrigued throughout. Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for my copy.

This book starts out really strong. It does, however, lose momentum in the middle and end. The premise is a good one, I just lost interest. This isn't a horrible story, it just missed the mark for me. It does keep you guessing on who did it.

Thank you to NetGalley, Sarah Pekkanen and St Martin's Press for the opportunity to read to this book.

I enjoyed this one! Creepy kids get me every time especially when they’re in an equally creepy house. I will say the middle drug just a little for me but not enough for me to not enjoy the book. Thanks for the chance to read early!

I would honestly give this one 4.5 stars if I could. I really enjoyed the plot and thought the twist was so good. I definitely didn’t see the ending coming. I loved Stella and thought the parallel between her childhood and what Rose is going through now was so well developed. The audio was really well done and the short chapters made for a decently quick read. It was pretty fast paced as well which I love in a thriller.

This book was a bit much for me. So many red herrings, twists and side plots that just seemed sort of unecessary. Some of what the main character does as a professional just seem so far off what is allowable I didn’t buy it. If this was a bit more literary and really only focused on the young girl Rose and was quite as breathlessly “shocking” I think it would have worked more for me.

I love kids! And so the idea of a kid being conniving and criminal really weirds me out. This book plays on that creepy idea. Is Rose Barclay a deeply disturbed and dangerous nine year old? Or is something more complicated and sinister at play here? And will MC attorney Stella find closure with her own personal trauma?

This was a great thriller full of red herrings, suspense, twists and tender moments too. You'll whip through the last few chapters!

This was a wonderfully dark and twisty novel, where you're thrust into the middle of a possible murder in a wealthy couple's mansion.

Their nanny is dead; that's the only thing that's certain.

The book revolves around Stella, who is the best interest attorney brought in to help the couple's daughter, Rose, who is suffering from traumatic mutism after seeing her nanny lifeless on the ground outside of their home.

The book is a whirlwind of tension, terror, and surprise, and I really enjoyed it!

If you like thrillers, this one doesn't disappoint!

Much like her last novel I read, Gone Tonight, House of Glass is another story that is like starting a puzzle and slowly but surely making your way to completing it. There were so many factors in this novel that had me triple guessing myself and who I thought did it. In every book I’ve read by Pekkanen there is a stressful environment with a high level of psychological tension. (Which I love!) I’m also always on the edge of my seat at some point during the story and House of Glass was no different. I listened to the audio and finished in a day because I HAD to know “who did it”. This was a very bingeable thriller with an eerie setting and complex characters.

Thank you St Martins Press for the arc via Netgalley!

I enjoyed this novel as a run of the mill thriller. Noting spectacular but nothing cringy. It was perfect for what it was.

Psychological thrillers are always great to listen to while running errands and doing chores around the house, and this was the perfect audiobook to keep me entertained while unpacking and settling in after our recent vacation.

House of Glass is unique in that the protagonist, Stella, isn't a detective; she's a best interest attorney who works with children. The plot addressed Stella's backstory as thoroughly as it did the main mystery of the book. I enjoyed this balance, and the author set up Stella's character so strongly that she could definitely spin her off into future books.

The main conflict in the narrative is the murder of a young nanny in a wealthy couple's home. This storyline progressed at a respectable speed, with a few not-so-unexpected surprises that were still entertaining.

This is a good choice for your next summer read!

This was expertly written and full of turmoil, confusion, lies, and tense moments. The characters were all so unlikeable at first, everyone a possible suspect. But as we weeded out what the story actually was, who was involved, and who was just trying to protect the child, the craziest outcome was unfolding.

I don’t read a ton of thrillers, but this one was mostly a mystery with some thrilling elements/suspense. Highly recommend for lovers of domestic thrillers, law enforcement/lawyer MCs, and creepy vibes 😂

I thought I knew where this was going in the first chapter but I was very happily surprised!! Short chapters, engaging story—overall enjoyable thriller with a great ending

A story that keeps you at the end of your seat, with thinking you know the answers, but then, quickly doubting yourself.
This is the story of a young girl, age 9, and the suspicious death of her nanny, but the reason Stella is involved is because a divorce between her parents. Stella is to give her opinion as to whom should have custody of Rose. In the end she gets much more than she bargained for, and we are there, or page turning for the answers.
There are so many twists and surprises here, most I never saw coming, and again I was looking down the wrong path, more than once!
I've enjoyed several books by this author, she does not disappoint, and now I'm going to be looking for more!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher St. Martin's Press, and was not required to give a positive review.

House of Glass by Sarah Pekkanen - WOW! This book was fantastic! Everything I would want in a thriller! This book kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat from the first page until the very last sentence. So many moving parts but they were all tied up pretty good in the end!

Wow what a book! This story was a masterfully built mystery/thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! I think the characters were great! the suspense was amazing as the mystery of the Barclays unraveled so did the mysteries that Stella had! It had some big twists that I was not expecting!
An easy 5 star for me and my favorite in 2024 so far!

4.5 stars.

Sarah Pekkanen has done a masterful job of creating an intriguing and creepy atmosphere with this story. Lawyer Stella Hudson has been tasked with determining custodianship of nine year old girl Rose Barclay—daughter of a complicated, wealthy family and eye witness to the suspicious death of her nanny. The family has secrets to protect and everything is not as it seems. While Stella is tasked with determining who Rose should live with upon her parents’ looming divorce, she finds herself in the middle of unravelling a murder—a murder where everyone in the Barclay house may be a suspect. I flew this story. The pacing was wonderful and it kept me guessing all the way until the dramatic ending.
