Originally I would have rated this book very low. It's disgusting to hear about cousins sleeping together (whether they are or not, the thought it still there in this book). The narrator's voice is whiny and sounds like nails on a chalkboard. However, once we got past Juliet's first section and Alexis it got better. There were some things that were super predictable, but others that were huge shocks.

HAPPY PUB WEEK to this absolute gem of a book!!

Juliet and Hugh Mullen have a fantastic life, that is until a distant relative shows up at their doorstep and everything goes to hell.....

The House Guest is written in seven parts, all of each in a different POV from four different characters. The shifting of the POVs gives deeper insights to each of these characters while simultaneously deepening the web of lies and betrayal that is going on in this book. Each time a new part came up something jaw dropping was revealed, and I was here for it. I really felt a connection with all of the characters, even if they weren't the most likeable; some are even down right vile. These characters have such depth to them that you really feel like you know them as you read this story. The House Guest is a super addicting bingeable read. It starts off a tad bit slow, but by part two your head will be spinning and you'll be flying through the pages. The ending was phenomenal.

I went into this book completely blind, and I finished in just over a day, with my jaw on the ground in absolute shock at how much I loved this one. I am most definitely going to have to go back and read more of Alison James work because this was fantastic. I will be thinking about this one for quite some time because it was just so twisty.

I listened to this one via audiobook and it was narrated by Jen Cramer. I felt that she did a great job at giving each character different voices. I couldn't put this one down so I am most definitely recommending this audio to everyone.

The House Guest was just released on 11/1, and it is on Kindle Unlimited!!! All my psychological thriller friends are going to need to pick this one up because it sure is a wild ride. I loved this one! Huge thank you to NetGalley, Alison James and Bookouture Audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest review!

A riveting tale of inheritance, love and scandal. The story opens up in the ambience of the grand house with an ongoing neighbourly party that is interrupted by the new house guest who claims to be the next in line to inherit this beautiful place. As the new guest enters their life, everything has been derailing ever since, their marriage, trust and probably everything else too. But the most astonishing part is the hidden reality of the new guest!

The book was a fast-paced thriller that kept prompting me that everything goes downhill from here, and yet reviving another trump card one after another. What worked in this case was the multiple PoV discussed one after another, shedding the required amount of clarity to the reader. You will be able to predict a few twists coming up your alley, but mostly it's pretty quizzical.

Thank you @netgalley @bookouture for the audiobook

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this audiobook.

Wow! This was full of twists and turns and kept me guessing until the very end. The fact that there was multiple POV but a single narrator threw me off more than once, but I managed to make it through relatively unscathed. Definitely a good, edge-of-your-seat read!

Juliette lives in a magnificent house with her husband Hugh. The trouble comes as long lost relative Alexis Lambert appears, and becomes is next to inherit the house.

This book was full of twists, almost every chapter changed the whole perspective on what was going on. At some point it was hard to put the book down and I needed “just one more chapter”.

The narrators did a wonderful job at portraying characters.

A distant relative an heir to the manor unexpectedly arrives at Juliette and Hugh’s doorstep. They unknowingly invite her in…
Not long after Hugh is killed in an auto accident and Juliet now must leave her home.

A domestic thriller that is hard to put down! Fast paced and exciting this book had me guessing and guessing again. Twists in the plot throughout had me wondering right to the very last page! A definite must read!

▪️marriage in trouble
▪️UK setting
▪️long lost family member
▪️multi POV

this story follows a couple living in the husband’s posh family home. when a long lost cousin shows up, needing a place to crash for a bit, things start to get hectic. for this multi POV story, I would not recommend the audiobook since there is a single narrator and with the faster pacing it can be harder to keep track of. i did think the plot was great, and the physical copy would probably be easier to follow.

Thank you Netgalley & the publisher for the gifted copy in exchange for review.

The House Guest is a twisty thrill ride of surprises. When Alexis Lambert appears at the estate of Hugh and Juliet Mullen the trouble begins almost immediately. The author weaved a tale that will keep you glued until the very last sentence. The characters were entertaining and crazy in equal parts. Fans of Downton Abbey will recognize the the inheritance rules that can govern UK estates and will be met with the beautiful tones of living such a luxurious life.

I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Juliet Mullen receives a message from Alexis Lambert, stating that she is Hugh Mullen's distant cousin.
As they allow her into their home, Alexis gets too comfortable and starts to claim everything as her's.
Juliet soon regrets her decision but she is also very careful in her way forward - what she doesn't expect is her husband being a probable philanderer and might have different thoughts ab0ut how he wants to plan his future.

Too many twists kind of ruined this book in my opinion, also didn't bring closure to some points!
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture Audio, Alison James for approving the audio ARC in exchange for an unbiased review

Wow!
I struggled, I have to admit at the very beginning, wondering if anything was going to happen or not and then BAM, I was fooled, the writer was cleverly setting the foundations for what turned out to be an incredible and thrilling story.
LOVED the narrative as the tale unfolded from the perspective of several characters, cleverly unwinding the plot to a series of gasp out loud moments that leave you reeling with shock and a whole host of emotions.
Another memorable and thrilling story from Alison James who has now cemented herself into my ‘Must Read Author’ category.
An absolute must read.
If you prefer the audible version, narrated by the ever popular Jan Cramer, then it’s a definite must listen.
Bravo Bravo..

Okay so this is such an interesting plot device re the trust with the house that has to stay in the family and there is a penalty for divorce. The different key characters and how they were brought in and just added more tension and more explanation with each different POV, it worked so well.

The narration really added to the story and kept me up late at night as I needed to finish to find out what happened.

I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

I switched between ebook and audiobook with this one and both are great formats. This is a great psychological thriller that keeps you guessing. Told from several perspectives and where it may seem to get off to a slow start hang in there as it doesn’t last long. Really well developed storyline and characters that have hidden depths. The storyline keeps you engaged and has many a twist and turn that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is a great read and one you won’t be able to put down.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to listen to and review #TheHouseGuest

This was a solid 4 star read! It’s not often I’m surprised by books but I did not see this one coming. Each POV brought a new twist and it made for a completely unexpected story.

I wish I liked Juliette a little more so I could feel solidly on her side. I also didn’t love the narrator’s ‘posh’ voice, and think this would be better as a physical book read.

The House Guest is a quick and addictive thriller that will.keep.you wanting more. Here we meet the Mullen's, as they meet a distant relative. But is she all she seems? We follow the story along multiple POV's as we find each of the characters thought, feelings and deceptions.

This will keep you wanting more.. right till the last page! We are thrown by twists and turns at every stage in this cleverly wrote thriller! And all because they welcomed a stranger into their house! Couldn't put it down!!

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the gifted ALC for review considerations. All opinions expressed below are mine alone.

"The House Guest" by Alison James starts out by introducing us to Juliette who is married to Hugh and lives in a gorgeous estate home maintained by Hugh's family trust. But when Juliette is contacted by Alexis, the next heir to the home, on instagram, she thinks nothing of it. One evening while hosting a party at Mullen's End, Alexis arrives with a suitcase ultimately inviting herself to stay a while. Is this gorgeous young lady really here to see the impressive family home, or is her visit more sinister?

From the publisher: For anyone who enjoys Ruth Ware, Freida McFadden and Claire McGowan. As a Freida, and Ruth fan, this publisher recommendation caught my eye. Along with the cover, I felt obligated to listen to this audiobook.

This story is entertaining, silly, outlandish at times, and it's a page-turner, but there are a few downsides to this book. Not long into the story, the reader becomes aware of the whole mystery, and what's meant to keep us guessing and engaged, with all plot twists given away fairly early. With marital problems between two separate but close families, it seemed more of a domestic suspense novel than any psychological thriller I've read by Frieda McFadden. Also, it was written with multiple points of view that backed up into the timeline. So, the reader was able to continuously read everyone's point of view throughout. I personally thought it was repetitive and unnecessary.

Let's talk about the audiobook narrator, Jan Cramer. She did fantastic! As I mentioned earlier, this book is written with multiple points of view, and Jan nailed each and every character perfectly.

Would I recommend "The House Guest" by Alison James? Sure! Again, it's silly at times and outlandish, but also entertaining with a fast pace. However, it's definitely not even close to being similar to Frieda McFadden's work.

The House Guest is now available in audiobook format today starting on November 1st.

The House Guest by Alison James was a fun book to listen to. I would recommend this book to any thriller lover!
This book starts you off with Juliet and her version of the events once she hears from the mysterious cousin Alexis. You learn secrets and pieces of the puzzle from her. Then we move to hear from Alexis herself. We then learn more secrets and pieces of the puzzle. This continues throughout the book with out giving too much away. But this book kept me guessing as to who knows what. Very good ending to tie everything together!
I would like to thank NetGallery and Bookouture for allowing me to read the book early and give an honest review.

Okay, wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the changing viewpoints and the twists that came with each new perspective. I really thought the storyline was just soooo obvious but I was soooo wrong. This is not your average thriller. This was a page turner filled with deception, drama, lust, & greed. Everyone had their own agenda and it took us somewhere I never saw coming. Solid 4 stars!

Gripping and heartbreaking with an undercurrent of unease running through it. Half can’t bear to read/half can’t bear to put it down. It’s marvellous - so tautly plotted and don’t see the twists coming! Will be a smash hit!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Hugh and Juliet Mullen reside in the beautiful family estate of Mullens End and they are the envy of all that know them. Each year they throw a lavish party at the estate and it is the talk of the town. However, this year a stranger knocks at their door and when she introduces herself as Alexis, Hugh’s long lost cousin things at the Estate start to take a dramatic turn. We learn very early in the story that Mullens End is an Estate that can only pass down to members of the Mullen bloodline and as Hugh and Juliet could not have any children of their own, this long lost relative is the only living survivor of the Mullen family who would be the next in line to inherit Mullens End. This could only occur when Hugh passes away but at 35 years of age, that wouldn’t be for a very long time……or would it? I really liked this twisty psychological thriller and it kept me wanting to read to find out how this would all unfold….Enjoy!!

Alright, I really liked this one. The premise was a little improbable but the wonderful storytelling made this a unique and interesting thriller. I think my favorite thing about this book was the author's use of multiple povs. This is told through four different perspectives and each one was really well done. This was not a typical thriller, more like a psychological suspense with a murder mystery aspect. I really enjoyed witnessing the entertaining drama unfold between characters. I recommend this one for fans of slow paced thrillers, family drama, and murder mysteries with a twist.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
