The narrators were really great…I enjoyed this audiobook. The FMC was young and naive which annoyed me a bit but that just may be my preference. I loved the premise of this book and I feel like this 1920’s fae vibe needs to be in more books lol I would definitely read the next one.

I keep trying with this book, but I'm really struggling. I'm unsure if the problem is that I'm listening to an audiobook or that I'm just not connecting with the book itself. The tl;dr is that I think I need to DNF this audiobook and try to borrow a paper copy from the library another time.

I really like the plot description, and this book should be something I'm really into. I love the idea of this setting. But after a couple of chapters, I'm still having a hard time following what is happening, and it makes me dread reopening the book. It's also a very long book, and maybe the pacing is also making it harder for me. Some of the other Goodreads reviews mention liking the narrator and getting sucked in from the start, but I'm just not into her and maybe that is a personal distraction. I need to DNF this one and just circle back to a printed copy of the book at another time. Rating for 3 stars because I intend to try again in another format.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for graciously letting me listen to and review this audiobook.

Addie grew up believing that she's different from everyone else, and if not different, then perhaps certifiably insane. She can see spirits and nymphs and all sorts of magical creatures that no one else can, and every full moon is is visited by the devil in her dreams. When her dear father passes away and she begrudgingly follows her brother away from their family farm all the way to Manhattan, the fantastical world only she could see becomes more and more real. Her brother is convinced that Addie is having a nervous breakdown, but when she meets Jack, a crime lord and self proclaimed Prince of Prohibition, she realizes she may not be as crazy as she may seem. With the boundaries between the fae world and the human world becoming less and less clear, Addie may be the only one able preserve what is left of humanity.

This book includes:
- an atmospheric adolescence in the Georgia backwoods
- prohibition, women's suffrage, speakeasies, and hooch
- fated mates with a dangerous bond
- druids, fae, enchanted food, glamours, wyverns, and more
- a secretive and brooding MMC
- the breakdown of generation curses (both physiological and literal)
- found family
- a journey of self discovery
- a lost FMC
- betrayal
- secret societies
- some scottish mythological lore
- cliffhanger ending

This story is so unique. I was dubious of a historical fiction romantasy taking place in the prohibition, and worried it may feel a bit gimmicky, but Marks did such a good job of giving readers a new perspective into fae fantasy. Addie is a very complex heroine and I feel that she really made sense within her environment. Her initial subservience and niavite are aligned with the way women were forced to be in the 1920s and her journey of self confidence feels appropriately matched to the suffragette movement of the time as well. The fantasy elements are well written, and I do feel like "The Prince of Prohibition" offered something unique to elements commonly used in the genre. The found family elements are charming, despite the ending being SO FRUSTRATING AH. On to book two fr.

I listened to the audiobook version and it made a point to show Addie's southern accent, something that is commented on often while she is in New York. It was a bit distracting as a listener at first, but once I got used to it, i liked the way it added to Addie's character.

My only issue is that I don't feel that the book cover and title properly convey the dark atmosphere of the story. For most of the book, Addie is having a nervous breakdown and is convinced that she is not only insane, but also personally haunted/tempted to evil by Satan himself. A title like "The Prince of Prohibition" sounds a bit gimmicky and silly, taking away from the fabulous writing and character depth. Maybe the pink carton cover would work with a different title because it's cute, but again does not convey the gravitas.

I recommend this book to lovers of "A Court This Cruel and Lovely" and "a Fate Inked in Blood," as well as any other fantasies that follow a women through a path of self discovery.

I received this audiobook as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley, Marilyn Marks, and Dreamscape Media (my favs) for the opportunity to review this book. This review has been posted to GoodReads check out my profile https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/62314863

Diving into this book felt like stepping back into the roaring '20s with a supernatural twist. Adeline's escape from her haunted past in Georgia to the bustling streets of New York introduces us to the captivating world of gangsters, flappers, and fae magic. Jack Warren, the millionaire bootlegger, adds a dangerous allure—the three-part story, though a slow burn at first, grips you as secrets unfold. The characters, especially Addie and Jack, are vividly written, and the final act is a rollercoaster leading to a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. This book, blending fantasy, romance, and historical elements, left me eagerly awaiting the sequel. A magical journey through a bygone era with a dark and thrilling edge!

“Maybe magic and humans weren’t so different—vicious when hurt, but beautiful when loved.”

This. BOOK! I’m going to need everyone to drop what you’re doing and add this to your tbr immediately, because this is a new OBSESSION!

I truly cannot believe that this was @marilynmarksauthor fantasy debut (she also writes as @malloryhartromance). The lore of this fantasy world was so complex & unique, whimsical and yet somehow still terrifying. We learn about the magic and creatures in the most well paced way, all while we’re also experiencing a swoony & steamy romance, heart pounding action, and SUCH a charming found family.

Addie is the kind of character I love. She starts as a scared and confused young woman, used to being told what to do and who to be by the men in her life. Throughout this tale, she transforms so organically and fully, becoming such a fierce and brave woman. She finds that she’s always been intelligent & capable, and also that there is SO MUCH more to her story than she had ever guessed. I also ADORED the chemistry and tension between Jack & Addie (emphasis on tension especially because it was 🥵. These two have me by the throat, I’m telling you!)

The ending had me in pieces, and every time I thought I had a read on what was going to happen, I found myself taken by surprise all over again. Truly nothing is as it seems in this story, and @charliesbookrecs spent an entire evening freaking out back and forth with theories, reflections and general RAVING about this book. If you enjoy fae, vicious women, complex faerie lore, the villain who gets the girl, surprising plot twists and feminism galore, you must read this story!

Thank you so much to Dreamscape and NetGalley for their audiobook copy! I also really adored this audiobook narrator and enjoyed the way the characters were expressed from the voice actor. This was the perfect way to reread one of my favorites and I'm so happy Marilyn Marks book baby was so well represented in audio!

Actual Rating: 3.5⭐

I have mix feelings toward this one, there are some things I really like and find fascinating to know more about but there’s also things that makes me didn’t fully enjoy it.

I got the audio version of this book. I like the narrator’s voice, especially when she sings the song that the main character like to sing. I really like the tune and I find myself humming that song together when the narrator sings it.

The first few chapters are interesting and I got hooked into the story very fast. However, somewhere during the middle of the story, the pacing turns slow and the world building got slightly confusing. Fortunately, the pace picks up again when some of the twists are revealed in the last few chapters.

As for the characters, Addie (FMC) isn’t really a likeable character… I got annoyed by her actions throughout the story probably because she’s too naïve since she was sheltered from the world by her own family. I would’ve liked to see her character grow in the next book because I can see a potential that she could become a badass one.

Overall, for a debut novel this was a pretty good one.
It’s a unique combination of historical fiction x fantasy romance which I like to see more of and I hope there would be exploration regarding the world building and the characters.

I’m looking forward to read the next one to know the answers to some of the mysteries left unanswered from this book.

I received an advanced review copy for free through Netgalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Huge thank you to the author and publisher!

This is one of the best books I have ever had the opportunity to read. It’s beautiful , suspenseful, and entertaining.

The time period of prohibition is not one that is often used in fantasy stories but it honestly should be. I love the idea of the fae running the bootlegging scene.

I felt the dynamic between Jack and Adeline was definitely odd in the beginning. Complete opposites but I liked that they are two very different people. They truly had to grow to learn about each other and get along. Which was incredibly long and one of the toughest slow burns I have ever gotten through haha. I am definitely more of a insta love trope girly but I still loved the adventure of their relationship.

I was not expecting that ending at all. I was expecting a very different outcome of all they went through but I liked the surprise. It has been a long time that a book ending has surprised me and I could not figure it out.

I cannot wait for the next part of this story. I definitely need more Jack and Addie.

This is the first audiobook I have listened to. The narrator did a great job. It made it so fun to listen to with all the different accents she has to do. Thank you so much for the opportunity to listen and review this !

Thank you to Marilyn Marks, NetGalley, and Dreamscape Media.

I really enjoyed this and the narrator, though I do feel like the welsh accents sounded a little off. I think her inflections and emotions in her voice were great and really added to the story!

The story was fantastic and I liked that it wasn’t predictable. Whenever I thought it was going one way, it went a different direction.

There’s just something about that time period lately that is really hooking me into books, and The Prince of Prohibition was no exception! The slang, the fashion of the times, the sweet moments between Addie and Jack, the crime, the found family aspect of it- all of it was done perfectly.

Though Jack was possessive, he wasn’t overly so and there were so gentle, sweet moments with him. But also the banter, tension and spice was so good! Addie was a reluctant FMC just trying to find her way, but that was to be expected given her upbringing. Please check TW/CW! The supporting characters were also amazing!

I can’t wait for The Veil of Violence!!

Audiobook narrator/production 5/5 stars

Story and Plotline 3.5-4/5 stars

The Prince of Prohibition is a story that has been on my radar since it released 8 months ago (March 2023). It initially captured my attention with the unique cover and setting for a fantasy romance. The creativity and originality put this book towards the top of my TBR several times.

The audiobook production was one of the best I have ever listened to, especially considering this was a single narrator of a single POV story. The narrator, Brenda Scott Wlazlo, expertly conveyed the emotions of our main character Addie and successfully managed several accents, including a Welsh accent and a prohibition era southern accent. Addie has periods of deep melancholy and hopelessness in the beginning of the story and the audiobook perfectly represented those feelings and nearly brought me to tears.

As far as the story/plot is concerned, the exposition of the story was crafted beautifully. Addie is the misfit in their small farming and mining town in rural Georgia growing up for being able to see the "devil folk". As she is growing up, we see the desperation of the town trying to survive and the impact of The Great War on her family in particular. This sets up a wonderful contrast to the excess and splendor of New York City in the Roaring Twenties when Addie and her brother move there after losing the family farm in Georgia.

Once in New York City, Addie is pulled into the orbit of our hero Jack Warren who introduces Addie to the magical side that she has always seen but never understood. As her knowledge of the fae deepens, she realizes that her role in this new world is not a spectator, but rather vital to the balance of the world as she knows it.

I found the first half of the story to be incredibly compelling; however, around the 40-50% mark of the story I found it to be lagging and boring. I would pause the audiobook and not really have the desire to continue it. If I didn't have an ALC of the book, I likely would have DNF'ed.

Upon consideration, the reason that I felt it dragging is that despite the unique setting and exposition, the remainder of the story followed a pretty standard fantasy romance formula. The human female is a chosen one, the dark and mysterious hero with ulterior motives, and some sort of forced proximity, defeating the "big bad", fated mates and/or soulmates. Additionally, considering the length of the book, there wasn't sufficient plot progression, both in Addie and Jack's relationship and in the overarching plot of the story. I got to the last 10% of the book and was confused about what was happening and why it was happening.

That being said, I commend Marilyn Marks's careful and thoughtful inclusion of women's rights and segregation/racism in a story set in a different time period. I appreciated that she didn't fall in the trap of ignoring those aspects of the time period that the story was set in, applying a too modern approach to those topics, or excessively-highlight the shortcomings of a less informed and more prejudiced era in a gregarious fashion.

The Prince of Prohibition ends on a cliffhanger.

I received an Advanced Listener Copy of the audiobook from Netgalley and the publisher, Dreamscape Media for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I don't listen to audiobooks very often but I was super intrigued by this book and wanted to see what I was missing with an audiobook. I've very glad that I didn't miss this book!

The story kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the book. There are bank robberies, dragons, knights, fae, and bootleggers all in a 1926-New York setting (for most of the book at least) plus sexual tension, spice, and mystery.

My favorite character was Violet Warren - she is just the ultimate bad ass flapper and her quips were amazing. Adeline was frustrating at first but slowly her sheltered upbringing and lack of confidence in herself melted away and she became so much more fun.

The ending was like a rollercoaster of emotions -- and the cliffhanger had me begging for more. I can't wait for the second book to come out.

I was hooked the moment that I started listening -- but it took me awhile to finish the audiobook. The narrator goes between character voices pretty well and I was able to distinguish each character based on her tone.

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for an ARC of this audiobook!

Just wrapped up this audiobook. First off, major shoutout to the narrator. She did a fantastic job, especially with male voices and the singing parts. Hearing her actually sing the songs during those scenes was a pleasant surprise and added a cool dimension to the experience.

Now, onto the story. While there's room for improvement, it still holds its own. The Fae lore intertwined with the roaring twenties backdrop had me hooked from the get-go. A refreshing twist to have it set in the 20s rather than medieval times.

However, Addie. She got on my nerves. I get the sheltered upbringing, but her inconsistency and heavy reliance on the men in her life for decisions were a bit much. A bit more backbone would have made her character more compelling.

In a nutshell, "The Prince of Prohibition" is a decent listen with a unique blend of Fae lore and 1920s vibes. The narrator's skills and the unconventional setting make it stand out.

I could not get past the first bit, I was so excited for the theme - fae in the 1920s is amazing but I was immediately annoyed with all of the characters. Nothing drew me in and I found myself skimming to see if it got better. Sadly this one was not for me, the romance fell flat, the plot was not enough to keep me interested and I’m really sad I didn’t like it. The idea was so promising!

Thank you NetGallery, the publishers, and the author for giving me the opportunity to review this book.

This book had really interesting lore throughout, and I really enjoyed the fantasy pieces of it, I'm interested to see where the lore develops. I thought it was a bit refreshing and a new take on some of the themes seen in books like A Crown of Thorns and Roses and Twilight.

The romance bits were quite good for the first 2/3 rds of the book too, until they finally get together and you find out what is happening. The truth of everything left a bit of a bad impression. That said, it will be interesting to see how the author redeems everything in the following books.

Overall a decent read, I'd recommend it to people who like certain genres, but it isn't a book I think would win folks over who don't normally like fantasy and romance of a certain kind.

The Prince of Prohibition had me completely riveted from the very first page! Addie was such a charming, naive FMC and I loved getting to experience her journey from loving and sheltered southern girl to hesitant socialite. Her personality and selfless nature shone through the pages in a very genuine way and it was so much fun to see her come into her own. This book is on the longer side for a debut romantasy, but I never got bored and I don’t feel that the plot ever slowed down. The premise was incredibly unique and different from anything else I’ve read. Elements of The Great Gatsby meshed with gangsters and fae thrust me quite vividly back into an alternate version of the roaring 20s. The romance was also very well done in my opinion and the familial drama had me questioning my sanity until the very last chapter. I will be waiting with bated breath for the next installment!

So to start the audiobook was amazing! I loved everything out it, the narration was brilliant. As for the story given that this is a hefty book with a thoroughly thought out plot, it was a bit boring to me. I was really curious by the devil, so that is what made me read until the end.
I can just say that I liked it, but I didn't love it, but given as the end is a cliffhanger, I'm excited to read the next one and then my make my decision if I want to continue.

I did not get to finish the audio book. I was approved on 7th and it was archive on the 14th. I was 30% through it. But I LOVE IT. I read the book back in March. I was really excited to listen to it also. The narration is amazing. No complaints about the book, I can't for the wait for the second. But I am disappointed I did not have enough time to finish the book. It is a 5 star for me.

Adeline lives a very sheltered life on her superstitious father”s farm. All her life he’s taught her how to keep the devil at bay. After his death, Adeline’s brother, Tommy, can no longer pay for the farm, so it’s off to the glitz and glamor of New York City. There Adeline comes face-to-face with Jack, a millionaire who also happens to be a bootlegger, among other things. What follows is a whirlwind far more intense than anything Adeline could have ever imagined.

This book is LONG. The audio topped out at 19 hours, which is much longer than things I usually read. That said, it didn’t feel that long. In fact, during times when I couldn’t read, I found myself thinking of this book. And itching to get back to it. It’s that good. If I didn’t have to put it down, I wouldn’t have. Adeline is a great character, and Jack, well, do we love him or hate him?

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ALC. Brenda Scott Wlazlo was a great narrator when reading Adeline, but her British accents left something to be desired. Nonetheless, I definitely recommend this book.

First I would like to thank Dreamscape Media for providing me a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This is the story of Adeline who growing up in a small town in Georgia always saw things others didn't notice and is visited by her "devil" every full moon. Once her father dies and her brother moves them to NYC for a job, Adeline's life is thrown into chaos after she meets her "devil" in person, Jack Warren. As she spends more time in Jack's sphere she starts to learn more about herself and the world around her (both human and mythical) while fighting her extreme attraction to Jack. When she learns what her true purpose is she needs to figure out if she is willing to take the risk.

What I liked:
- Audiobook quality, as this is set in the 20's I think they did a great job getting a narrator who could not only get the Wales and Southern accent with a lilt of that era. Also, moving it to a 2X speed I didn't lose any quality
- World building, they did a great job with building this version of NYC which gave me a lot of Gatsby and ACOTAR vibes
- Band of friends, Jack has a group of people around him that bring out the best and worst of him and Adeline. I always liked the big group scenes cause I loved how everyone played off each other
- Religious extremism, as a person who grew up religious I always appreciate stories that present religious extremism in true light and this book does a great job with it
- Love/Hate relationship, Adeline has the most extreme love/hate relationship with Jack some of it she can't help but it does help push her as a person and Jack's belief in her is just everything

I really did enjoy this book and there was a lot more I loved but can't really note without being a spoiler. I will be extremely interested in how this story will go in the next book and I am hoping they will use the same narrator as this one. If you are looking for an epic story with great characters, world building and a unique romance then I would absolutely recommend this book to you.

It's a slow start, but the pace does pick up and the story gets interesting. I didn't like the ML, and as the story goes on he seems more and more the manipulative bastard. The FL is naïve, but likeable. And unfortunately the book does end on a cliffhanger. What I really enjoyed was the world building and side characters. It's not the kind of book that has you on the edge of your seat, but it is the kind that will have you very eager for book two.
