A quick and entertaining read told from the third person viewpoint of mother Katrina and daughter Cleo with a few other sources of information thrown in there (therapy transcripts, text messages, and legal documents). Blending a few common thriller plot devices (corporate coverups, infidelity, secret past lives, and inheritance money), Like Mother Like Daughter isn’t the most original of thrillers but still engages the reader. I wasn’t surprised at any of the twists and figured them all out quite early but it didn’t detract from my experience. My biggest criticism of the novel was the mother’s actions. If she really is a professional “fixer” I would have expected her methods of protecting her daughter to be savvier than what she displayed. Those parts of the novel read as immature, unrealistic, clunky, and not well researched and I was glad there weren’t too many of them. I think what I enjoyed most about the novel was the writing - fluid and descriptive without being banal or expected. It carried the novel and kept me turning pages well into the night.
Overall, this was a very well written and entertaining read, even if the plot lines were not the most original.

Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage and Anchor for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

Clever mystery that is engaging and has great character development (I especially like the way the relationship between the primary characters, Cleo and her mother) changed and developed.

A lot of clever twists and turns as you walk through this story, well done!

Like Mother, Like Daughter is an emotionally charged and suspenseful story that is a whirlwind.

This story is told in to POV's over two timelines (Kat & Cleo) before Kat's disappearance and Cleo, her daughter just after her mom is discovered to be missing. Over the novel Cleo and the reader try to understand what has happened to her mom, but a lot of secrets come out.

It was a pretty fast and easy read, although times I was very confused. I personally feel like I didn't mesh with the corporate world that this story went down, but it was still a pretty interesting and fast-paced read.

This story is a must read for anyone who enjoys complex of mother-daughter relationships & family secrets!

I had the opportunity to read Like Mother Like Daughter early through NetGalley
I found this book to be interesting and I couldn’t wait to see how it ended, but there was a lot going on and I found myself loosing focus several times.

I enjoyed seeing how it all come together at the end! I would have to give it 4 out of 5 stars. I took one star away for it being a little predictable, and a little much, making parts a little confusing. But overall it was a great read.

The alternating mother/daughter POVs were appropriate for this book. It is well-titled, and the author did a good job explaining the relationship between the two.

For a thriller, this wasn't overly suspenseful. I cared most about Cleo but found myself not caring much what happened to the mother, which isn't ideal.

The addition of therapists' transcriptions, press releases, and e-mails was fine but a little clunky. They seemed thrown in and didn't necessarily add to the story.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC.

It was very hard to get into this book. I found myself being pulled in all directions, confused about which storyline to follow and which characters were which. I wish I had felt more of a connection to any of the characters and even any of the characters connections to each other. Also, for me, a huge part of the story was very convoluted and rather unnecessary (no spoilers). This book was just not for me.

I’ve been a fan of Kimberly McCreight’s work since reading Reconstructing Amelia nearly ten years ago and I’ve devoured all her subsequent novels. In my opinion, Like Mother, Like Daughter is some of her best work.

Yes, this is a thriller surrounding the disappearance of attorney Katrina McHugh from her Park Slope residence (Yay for the Brooklyn reference!), but the heart of the novel is the troubled mother-daughter relationship between Kat and Cleo. McCreight captures the complexities, struggles, and volatility between the characters as only someone who is both a mother and daughter can. I found Kat to be a sympathetic character as she does her sometimes misguided best to be the parent she believes Cleo deserves.

There’s no shortage of suspects and plenty of twists in this page turner. Kat’s complicated life includes a harrowing and secretive past, a demanding job with blurry ethics, a crumbling marriage, and a strained relationship with her daughter. There are plenty of people who could be behind her disappearance. Getting to the truth is a compelling journey that exposes the lengths a mother will go to in order to protect her daughter.

Like Mother, Like Daughter will be released July 9, 2024 and will make a perfect summer read. It will keep you guessing until the truth is revealed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf

The NetGalley for this ARC of “Like Mother Like Daughter. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. The story was very fast paced which I loved.

The dual POVs with dual timelines it worked very well for the story.

The characters Kat and Cleo are well developed and feel like a real mother and daughter duo. Kat is strict and overprotective and Cleo is rebellious.

The story will keep you guessing til the very end.

Thank you netgalley and to the publisher I gave this a 3.7 .i was very easy to read to get through pretty fast .Cleos character was very likable. The only thing I didn’t really like was the business aspect part of the book if that would of been something different I think I would of liked it a lot more I just don’t like that’s my preference though. But overall I would recommend and I would purchase this book myself and not feel like I wasted my money

Mother and daughter, Katrina and Cleo, don’t have the best relationship. Katrina has meddled in Cleo’s life far too many times which has caused a huge rift between the two. However, Cleo agrees to go over for dinner. When Cleo arrives at her mother’s house, the oven is on, dinner is burning, but there’s no sign of her mom except for a bloody shoe.

This story is told through two alternating POVs: Katrina’s, starting 8 days leading up to her disappearance, and Cleo’s in the hours after Kat’s disappearance. With text chains, legal documents, and therapy session transcripts sprinkled throughout the story, so many things are happening in order to slowly fill in the gaps. There are so many secrets to uncover and truths to learn that it isn’t only about Kat’s disappearance. I felt like all of these things were handled so well and never felt like too much.

I could NOT put this book down. The exploration of this mother/daughter dynamic was so gripping that it grabbed my attention and did not let go. All of the different plot points kept me guessing all the way until the reveal of the twist. Overall, Like Mother, Like Daughter was so fun to read, trying to figure it all out and put the pieces together. For the thriller fans, I would highly recommend reading this book!

Thank you NetGalley and Knopf for the ARC!

This book was an ‘eh’ for me. I was shocked maybe once but thought there was too many characters, and a bit boring,

Like Mother, Like Daughter by Kimberly McCreight
Release Date: July 9th, 2024
Thank you to Kimberly McCreight and Knopf for my advanced copy

I remember reading Kimberly McCreight’s first book, Reconstructing Amelia, when it was released 10 years ago, and I was immediately drawn in by her writing. Knowing this, I knew that I would want to read her newest book as well.

Cleo and her mother, Kat, don’t have the best relationship. Kat likes order and being in control of all situations, and Cleo just wants to rebel. One night the duo plan to have a dinner in order to bridge the gap between them, but when Cleo arrives, Kat is nowhere to be found. In fact, the food is burning and Cleo finds a bloody shoe that belongs to Kat. With the police now investigating everyone, Cleo finds herself compelled to investigate Kat as well. What she finds isn’t what she expected, and it calls into question everything Cleo thought she knew about her mother.

Just as I expected: I liked this book a lot! I am not the biggest thriller reader; I’m particular and picky when it comes to thrillers and it’s harder for me to get engrossed into this genre. However, with Like Mother, Like Daughter, I was caught up into the story quickly. I enjoyed the dual points of view, and I liked that I didn’t know what was going on most of the time. The ending wasn’t expected, though I did see how it connected everything once I got there. It was a fast conclusion though and I wish it had been drawn out more. Regardless, I would read this again and will heartily recommend it!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Like Mother, Like Daughter by Kimberly McCreight. I loved this book!!! Kimberly McCreight's books have all been incredible and this one does not disappoint. It was a fast paced mystery/thriller that keep you reading late into the night. There were a lot of mysteries within that bigger mystery. I do not want to give anything away, so I will say that my opinions of the characters changes as the story progresses. Great ending, great writing....I recommended this as soon as I finished the book to all my reader friends.

This book was a bit lack luster for me. As far as a thriller goes the plot was interesting and definitely a thriller I’d be interested in but I found it to be long and drawn out. I didn’t really get to know the characters. The ending was just meh for me. I’d recommend this book though to those who love a thriller.

This book was a wild ride. Just when you were thinking you had it all figured out, BOOM! You’re wrong. It was so twisty and really kept the pages turning. I loved the inclusion of articles, transcriptions, and different text conversations. Our FMC is kind of a badass in her own right and I found myself rooting for her. Great ending too! Definitely pick this one up when it comes out on 7/9/2024!

A somewhat estranged college-aged daughter complies with her mother’s wishes to come by the house since they haven’t seen each other in a while. When the reluctantly daughter arrives, food is burning on the stove, and her mom is gone but blood remains. Where is her mom? And that’s just the very first chapter! Oh did this book suck me right in. I loved the short chapters where you’re not really sure what they mean or who is the narrator of these little bits. The “transcripts” and text threads thrown in add to the suspense and tension that’s constantly building.

This is a phenomenal book - from the first chapter and throughout the entire thrilling ending. I read this in one day because I could not put it down. There were so many little storylines in here that I just loved. The chapters go back and forth between right before she goes missing into hours after she’s missing so it all takes place in a very short time period adding to the fast pace of this book. Where is the missing mother? Why is she missing? What do the texts mean that she received? What secrets are being kept? Do yourself a favor and pre-order this book! Thank you to Knopf Publishing and Kimberly McCreight for this absolute thriller of an ARC.

This novel combines a riveting mystery with a family drama. Cleo and Kat, mother and daughter, have a very difficult relationship. Added to this is the “likable” father who uses his power to manipulate them and his own financial situation.

When Kat is missing from home and a pool of blood is left, Cleo begins to investigate on her own. She uncovers her mother’s past and present issues. It is the support of her current beau that helps her get through the trauma of what she uncovers. But, with unimaginable twists, the reader journeys to find Kat, and the truth of her background.

The book certainly kept me engaged. The story is narrated by both Kat and Cleo. The author cleverly inserts several potential villains, keeping us all guessing. I enjoyed this, as I had McCreight’s earlier novels. This is simply a great read. .

Thank you Netgalley for this compelling drama/mystery!

Thank you NetGalley & Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This review can also be found on Goodreads.

Admittedly, I know I am going to be an outlier with this rating and review. It was not my cup of tea. A long story short: I found the plot to be too slow, there were too many characters and side quests to keep track of, I was never hooked into the story, and I did not enjoy the writing style. While it was not my jam, plenty others have enjoyed it, and maybe you will, too!

When Cleo discovers that her mother (Kay), who she is slightly estranged from, has gone missing she begins to panic. The investigation begins, and Cleo feels it is her duty to help find her mother. Part of this is because she feels the investigation isn't doing enough, and part of this is guilt from the lack of relationship she and her mother have had over the years. We are thrown into multiple POVs and timelines, as well as multiple outside sources - such as therapy transcripts, legal documents, newspapers, etc. The reader backtracks through Kat's life leading up to her disappearance, while also tandem reading from Cleo's present day post disappearance. There are a lot of little connections I found tedious and unnecessary. However, if you enjoy those kind of reading breadcrumbs, you'll likely enjoy this read.
