I found my heart racing while reading this book and I wanted to scream at the heroine from time to time. I think she has anger management problems and a death wish. I really loved the setting but I really struggled connecting with the heroine who was so stubborn and angry and stupid honestly.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape media for the advance audio review copy of this title.

I tend to avoid books in series when I haven't read the books that come before, but I was in the mood for a horse book, so I made an exception. Glad I did. Mallory has horses and a donkey and a dog. And the requisite boyfriend, who happens to be a handsome lawyer. As in most cozy mysteries, she just can't keep herself from looking into things when it appears there has been a murder in her peaceful town.

I love the animals in the story. And her young employees. And the way she keeps secrets from her daughter...well, maybe not so much that, but the scene when the daughter accidentally learns about mom's boyfriend...

So--kind of a horse book for grown-ups, that happens to include a mystery with enough twists to keep me on my toes. And a perfect narrator for the story.

I will be going back to check out the first in the series, and waiting to see what comes next!

Mallory is on her usual business of horses when on a call to rescue a horse she finds a body, the horse's unfortunate rider. Things are not as they seem and it is up to Mallory to find out what exactly is going on and to find out if it is an accident or something worse.

Trotting into Trouble by Amber Camp is the second book of A Horse Rescue Mystery, but it can be as a standalone; however, there are spoilers for what happened in book one.

This murder mystery follows Mallory, who runs a horse rescue in their small town and has a propensity for getting involved in murder cases. This murder mystery was a cozy story that gave me the "Murder She Wrote" vibes I was looking for! Mallory is brought to catch a runaway horse and finds a dead body in the process. Mallory sensed that there was more to the story than beings poking around the murder for clues and found herself smacked down in the middle.

I enjoyed Amber Camp's storytelling abilities, which worked on previous issues efficiently without feeling like I missed too much information. I loved the setting, the nosy guard donkey, and the characters. However, Mallory, the horse rescue's main character and owner, got on my nerves. The audio narration was so beautifully done and made the story come to life. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and recommend picking up Trotting into Trouble for yourself!

Thank you Dreamscape Media for accepting my request to audibly read and review Trotting into Trouble: Book 2 in the Horse Rescue Mystery series on NetGalley.

Narrator: Coleen Marlo

Stars 4

Classy cozy mystery with its base being a horse rescue farm. This is the second book in the series; I didn't feel left out or lost. I give props to Camp, the characters were well-defined and solid. There was a comfortably, as the relationships grew and changed, that came with good writing.

The romance was sophisticated in its growth. I thought it moved realistically.

Again, kudos to Camp for tackling abuse and abandoned horses with grace. There were no cringe moments.

I would recommend this for young readers transitioning to adult books, as well as for people with good taste and smart. This would be a good read aloud nursing home book too.

The narrator was perfect: her voice, pace, and tone.

Second in the series about Mallory and her horse rescue. The characters and their relationships felt real. Would recommend to any horse lover.

Mallory runs a horse rescue, so it isn’t surprising when the sherif calls for help catching a riderless horse. What is unexpected is finding the body of the rider - and recognizing him as her former math teacher and retired high school coach. Although it seems like a tragic hunting accident, something doesn’t seem to fit, and soon Mallory and her assistant Tanner are disturbing a murderer with their questions.

With small town charm and likable characters this second in the series is a great cozy. Animal details are accurate and personalities well developed, while a touch of romance works naturally into the storyline. Narrator Marlo enhances the warmth with good pacing and clearly differentiated characters. This can be read as a standalone, but I know I will be looping back to read the first while waiting for the next. Hand this to fans of cozies and animal stories alike. Highly recommended.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance audiobook. All opinions expressed are my own.

I read Book 1 to prepare for this ARC and I am so glad that I did! I have now found ANOTHER series that I love! These books were my 1st by Amber Camp but they most certainly won't be my last, as I can't wait for the next in the series to come out! And I am adding all her books to my TBR! This was a super fun and charming story with a quick twist that I didn't see coming at the end!

Did anyone else read the Heartland series as a kid?

This is the second book in the "A Horse Rescue mystery" series. It definitely brought me back to elementary school when all the kids in my grade were on waitlists for each Heartland book at the school library thanks to the horse rescue setting.

Amber Camp owns a horse rescue but she use to consult on medical malpractice cases as an expert in nursing. In this book, she gets caught up in a murder investigation after helping to bring in a scared horse whose owner was missing (and ultimately found dead).

I enjoyed this mystery a lot. Sometimes I felt like her inner dialogue felt a bit inauthentic because she kept reminding herself she use to be a nurse, which was clearly for the audience's sake. Overall though, I was a fan of Amber and she felt very millenial to me.

I did not guess the ending, which is always fun when reading a mystery. This was a quick read too, which I also prefer in my mysteries.

I definitely want to read more in this series!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I loved this audiobook. I’m a horse trainer and horse lover so I always jump at any books with horses in them. Lots of accuracy with the horse references, so well researched by the author.
Enjoyable mystery. Good narrator.
I enjoyed this one so much I had to go and download the first book in this series too.

I listened to both of these in the series and I really liked them. The narrator has a soothing, easy to listen to voice. This is a great cozy series!

I took a chance on this one even though I thought the first one was just so-so. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters in that one and unfortunately, it’s the same with this one. Mallory is so dull and wishy-washy. And the mystery itself: it takes a while to get going and even then, there’s no real action; none of it is very exciting. Didn’t read the first one? That’s okay; the author tells you no less than three times what happens and who the guilty party was. Why?!! Don’t you want to sell books?!!! I doubt I’ll pick up the next in the series despite really enjoying the horses and the setting.

3.5 stars rounded up.

Premise - When her town's star basketball coach turns up dead, Mallory is on the case. It's a twisty ride full of small-town politics, but all the twists pay off in a very satisfying ending!

This is #2 in the series, but I read it without reading #1 and was just fine.

Mallory is a well-developed, relatable protagonist and it's fun to accompany her on this adventure. I'm not a horse person so I was a little nervous about taking this ARC, but it's so well-written (and paced!) that it's easy to stay engaged even if you're not super into horses. Frankly, reading the book has made me more interested in horses than I was before!

I would definitely read more from this author. The ending was well earned, clues were paid off, twists were twisty. Murder mystery fans will enjoy this!

Thanks, NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I gave 4 stars to Trotting into Trouble by Amber Camp

It’s business as usual when horse rescue owner Mallory Martin gets a call from Sheriff Grady Sullivan that a loose horse has been found in a popular hunting area. While trying to catch the horse, Mallory stumbles upon the body of his unfortunate rider, Hillspring’s star basketball coach, Douglas Griggs. All signs point to a tragic hunting accident.

Despite her better instincts, Mallory finds herself in the middle of another murder investigation when the coach’s widow begs her to look into the case. Mrs. Griggs believes the sheriff is ignoring any evidence that doesn’t point to an accident.

But Mallory’s troubles are only beginning. As she juggles a blossoming romance, tensions with her best friend Lanie, and responsibilities at the rescue, she discovers that Coach Griggs’s enemies had ample motive to murder him. And now, Mallory may be in the killer’s sights.

-------- REVIEW --------

The second book in A Horse Rescue Mystery. I have read the first one and liked both of them very much. This book had a more interesting mystery and I didn't figure out whodunit.
What I like about this series are all the animals. It is a fun theme that I have never seen in a cozy mystery before.

Last time I read the book and this time I listened to it. The narrator did a fantastic job and
I recommend the audiobook for people who prefer those. I will be continuing in the series.

I really liked this cozy mystery centered around a horse rescue. I thought the characters were likeable and well-written. The author was able to have the characters solving the murder, but also had them stay involved at the horse rescue. One aspect of the story wasn't sacrificed for the other. The author also depicted the horse rescue and it's related horse issues, very accurately. Having spent several years volunteering at a horse rescue, the scenes were very familiar and realistically depicted. I already have the first book in this series waiting on hold for me.
