This book was AMAZING! I gave it 5 stars. 15 year old Kelsey goes missing and her parents are distraught. Ellie is a detective and she's on the case, doing her best to find Kelsey and what happened to her. Her parents get a photo of Kelsey and it looks like she's dead in the picture, but Ellie thinks it's a copy cat killer. At the same time Ruby's best friend goes missing too. This story had me so intrigued, I couldn't put this book down. I literally read this in one sitting, it was that good.

Once again, Rita Herron has written a great story! I couldn’t put it down, just like all of the other books in the series. I highly recommend this series for anyone who enjoys detective storylines.
This is book 9 in the Detective Ellie Reeves series and follows Ellie as she races to find the killer of a young girl. The girl is found posed in a white gown and holding a teddy bear, and she realizes that it is very similar to an old case of a young girl murdered years before. She has to figure out if its the same killer, or a copycat.

Another great read by Rita Herron and I can’t wait until the next one in the series is released.

This is book number 9 in the series. It had me on the very first page. I love a book that involves missing people. Rita is an excellent writer whose books are addictive. This book is about social media and bullying.

Rita Herron's books are also a great read, especially the Ellie Reeves series. This is a particularly gripping story with the possibility of an unsafe conviction on the minds of every detective..I loved the way the author gave tantalising clues which allowed the reader to try to work out for themselves whether this was a copycat or a case of the wrong man serving 15 years in prison. There was just enough tension in this story to keep me rapt and determined to get to the finish in one sitting. I look forward to this great author's next work.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.

Rita Herron DOES NOT disappoint. I can always count on her books for strong women, chilling suspense and gasp out loud twists.
A teenage girl seems to have been stolen from her home - Ellie and her team search for clues. Working with her best friend, Ellie tries to get a sense of what is going on. And then the best friend disappears.
I love Ellie as a character - though I'm always hoping she'll resolve her feelings for Cord or Derrick. I'm always hoping for Cord.

The Sleeping Girls is the reason why I read the Detective Ellie Reeves series. There is just the right amount of suspense, twists, personal story and police procedural to keep me turning the pages. This is the 9th book in the series and although you will miss out on the personal stories along the way, each case is fully contained in each book. In the latest book, Ellie is called in when a teenage girl goes missing. Shortly after, the parents receive a picture of her posed in a bed on white sheets, holding a white teddy bear. When a second girl goes missing and her mother is sent a similar picture, Lt. Landrum, who works with Ellie, reveals that his sister was killed and posed the same way, fifteen years earlier. His half brother was convicted and jailed for the crime, but was recently released after the Innocence Project got involved. The team scrambles to find the second missing girl, hoping she is still alive and preventing anyone else getting killed.

This was a great story, that moved quickly and kept me interested from the first page. This case involves, bullying, especially involving social media, poor parenting and peer issues. The crime ties back to the one from fifteen years earlier and shoddy police work. I enjoy seeing the team that Ellie works with, how well they work together and the relationships. Ellie is a great MC, she is smart, independent and willing to jump in and sacrifice herself if it saves others. She is also empathetic, brave, and works well with others, which makes her a great team leader. My one niggle with this book and series is a love triangle between Ellie, Cord and Derrick. I thought it was sorting itself out, but maybe not yet. If you enjoy a good police procedural, with twists, secrets and great characters, I recommend you pick this one up, or any book in the series.

I absolutely love this book! This is the type of thrillers I enjoy. It has short chapters, quick read, excellent storyline, suspense at the end of every single chapter, and twists.

At first I thought that having MULTIPLE POVs was going to be hard to follow, but honestly it just made the story 10x better. And I loved the main characters. There was a love triangle going on and it really fit seamlessly into the story.

HIGHLY recommend this book!

Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and author Rita Herron for this gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

A killer is released from prison. A teenager goes missing. Did she run away or has she been abducted? Detective Ellie Reeves fears that this could be linked to an old murder case...
The Sleeping Girls is the 9th book in the Detective Ellie Reeves series. The case works as a stand alone book but there are personal relationship details that continue from earlier books.
Kelsey vanishes after arguing with her secret boyfriend. Her friends worry about her safety, especially after the release of intimate photos of the teenagers. She and her best friends were devastated by the social media trolling as well as dealing with tough problems with their families. Ellie Reeves needs to explore the risks that make the girls vulnerable while also trying desperately to find Kelsey.
The book is written from multiple third person perspectives. We witness Digger as he adjusts to life outside the prison and wonders about the past. Ellie is anxious to find Kelsey before it is too late. A killer plans his next victim, feeding off the thrill of his last attack. Ruby and June miss their friend whilst also dealing with their own home life issues.
The chapters are very short so the plot speeds along at pace. The girls' unhappy backgrounds are very emotive and I also enjoyed the way the different viewpoints construct the narrative. The tension mounts as the plot develops. There are also personal elements to Ellie's life as she considers her friendships and relationships. Other characters are also soul-searching about their choices and how these may impact their personal and professional lives.
The Sleeping Girls is a fast paced and engaging detective thriller.

Detective Ellie Reeves book 9.

What a great book this is. I was hooked from the very first page. I loved one character in particular and I was rooting for them all the way through. A great plot that will keep you reading way past your bedtime. Can't wait for the nexr book.

When the call comes in that fifteen-year-old Kelsey Tiller has gone missing from her bedroom in the middle of the night, Detective Ellie Reeves rushes to talk to her distraught parents. They tell her that Kelsey, a slender blond with green eyes and a timid smile, had plans to go shopping for her homecoming dress the next day, insisting she would have no reason to run away. But when neighbors report seeing Kelsey with a secret boyfriend, Ellie wonders how much Kelsey really told her parents. Can they find the girl before anything bad happens?

(4.5) Aye Ellie, Ellie, Ellie. Life keeps beating at you and you stand firm. Your integrity beyond reproach, your compassion and empathy just as strong. The Sleeping Girls touch on so much of what transpires today with Social Media, the bullying that hides behind the computers. Secrets that tear family's apart. I keep banging my head against the wall on Cord/Derrick. Please, please let there be a resolution. I am disappointed in Lola. I feel nothing but pity and that is waning. Great Series! Highly recommend starting with book 1. Then you see see Ellie's life unfold along with her. The growth, the small town atmosphere etc. It is possible to read as stand alone, but you do a disservice to yourself. Ready for book 10! Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. #TheSleepingGirls #DetectiveEllieReeves #RitaHerron #Bookouture #NetGalley (Also left on Facebook, Twitter(X) and Pinterest.

Reading Between the Wines book review #8/130 for 2024:
Rating: 3 ½ 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book: The Sleeping Girls (Detective Ellie Reeves Book 9)
Author: Rita Herron
Available now!

Sipping thoughts: I enjoy each mystery for every book in the series and this one is the 9th one. It is amazing Herron can continue to create so many murder mysteries for such a small town. It’s even more amazing that most of the time there is a tie to someone in the city and/or in the police department. As much as I love the mysteries, I am probably more invested in the love triangle that Detective Ellie Reeves is in. I could not wait for what happened at the end of the book Cord as I could see that coming a mile away.

Cheers and thank you to @Bookouture and @Netgalley for an advanced copy of @TheSleepingGirls.

I was all in from the start of this one. It grabbed me from page one and didn’t let up until the end. Missing girls, girl drama, terrible parenting, and a little bit of a love triangle or maybe even a bigger shaper among the detectives. While I mention the last part, it was such a small part of the book, but I do love to pay attention to the detectives in a crime novel and know what other little things are going on in their life and can distract them from their job. Because they are human and these things do exist.

In this one, not only did I read from the killer’s perspective, but the top suspect too and I was left to wonder if those chapters were told by the same person. I found myself going back and closely scrutinizing those chapters to see what I could glean from them and I waffled back and forth through the whole book wondering if they were or weren’t the same person. There were also enough other suspects that I wasn’t able to suss out who it was until right before the reveal.

This is a newer series to me that I haven’t had the chance to read the start of the series and I mention this to say this would work fine as a stand alone. The personal lives of the detectives, not the case, carries over from book to book and the author explains the important details for those new or those that may not remember all the previous details. This is such a fast paced series. It will appeal to all crime procedural lovers.

This is book number #9 in the Detective Ellie Reeves series. So far, I have enjoyed reading this book series and cannot wait to see where it leads next. I would recommend the read.

Detective Ellie Reeves is called to the case when a 15-year-old girl goes missing. Kelsey Tiller disappeared from her home overnight and her parents don’t think she is a runaway. She was preparing to shop for her homecoming dress and wouldn’t have a reason to leave.

When a picture turns up of Kelsey, posed and seemingly dead, Ellie is reminded of a prior case. That perpetrator, Darnell, has just been released from prison. Could he have killed another victim?

When Kelsey’s best friend, Ruby, disappears, Ellie fears that she may meet the same fate. She must solve this case quickly if she stands a chance of finding Ruby alive.

She will be faced with difficulty, as Darnell seems to have an alibi. Someone close to Ellie is hiding information. Who is the killer, and will Ellie find them in time to save Ruby?

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is the ninth book in the Detective Ellie Reeves series and I am embarrassed to say that I have not read any of the previous books in the series. Having finished this one, I am wondering why I have never come across these books before and I am eager to go back and read the previous books. I think there is a lot of fascinating back story, particularly relating to Ellie’s relationships with her colleagues, that I am interested to catch up on.

That being said, I had absolutely no problem following the story or understanding the characters, despite being 8 books behind. The author gives you all the information you absolutely need to know and lots of information can be gleaned from the interaction between the characters. The writing style is really approachable and the action is really well paced and draws the reader through the book with ease.

The setting of the book was one of the main things that drew me in. I am fascinating by the Appalachian area of the USA and the contrast between the very remote communities and people who live isolated lives in backwoods with people who live in more populated areas, with a very marked contrast between people with wealth and people who live relatively deprived lives, and the prejudices that can arouse in people. It also offers a lot of opportunity to do things privately without risk of being seen and making things much harder for the police to investigate. It adds a definite layer of tension and peril to the story.

Stories involving the abduction and murder of young people are always affecting and this one is no exception. The anguish of the parents is really well communicated and the reader cannot help but get sucked in to the story and be praying for the same return of the missing girls. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and glued to the pages until you have finished. This was a really quick read for me because I was so invested in the story and the writing is so easy to read. Highly recommended.
