2.5 writing exercise stars, not rounded up

The ‘creative writing prompts’ are more like basic exercises than prompts. They seem quite random, not focused on building a specific skill. “Write in first person (I) the life story of an abandoned pickup truck. Describe its color size, type, interior, and perhaps the license plate.” They do mention including senses, such as smells and sounds (basics of solid writing). Sometimes prompts have extensions. There is space to pencil in when you completed the prompt. I liked that a few prompts encourage one to ‘think outside the box.’ “In a detailed list, offer five things a lizard is grateful for, ranked from minor to major.”

Unfortunately, there were many exercises that I couldn’t relate to or were not inspiring to me. “A parent discovers their young child can turn pomegranates into rubies. This must be kept a secret from a local crime syndicate…” “A child goes downstairs one night to find their cat whispering to bunnies that have come alive from the tablecloth…” 218 of these is a lot.

The introduction suggests using “these prompts to invite memory, incite poetry, or add to your novel.” If one used these to add to a novel, it would indeed be very disjointed and random, like the book.

I would rather the graphics in the book were not so pink. I think other colors would appeal more to both men and women.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

“One Creative Writing Prompt A Day,” by Lita Kurth

I loved this writing book to practice my skills. I loved that the prompts were super random and felt so new to other ones I’ve used before. Some examples of prompts used is “Describe your music- celebrity characters favorite t-shirt and a particular place they wore it” and “An artist plans to honor their mentor with a work of art. Describe the proposed work” etc. The entire book is filled with ideas like this that are so random that I really had to take time and think before writing instead of the most used and realistic things to write about. I loved this book, 5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you for the copy, Netgalley.

I really like the premise of this prompt book. I have been stuck in writer's block so prompts obviously with getting a writer unstuck. I struggle with prompts a lot when they are impractical to me or to my story/character. But I liked the structure of this being a prompt a day. However some of these prompts were questionable to me. Stuff about ghosts a my character young to psychic didn't sit right but I just skipped those!

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

One Creative Writing Prompt A Day is a journal with 365 writing prompts - one for every day of the year. Some prompts have a full page for you to write on, and some are four to a page, meaning some are quick and some are more detailed. Each one is very different, and some are quite quirky. I enjoyed this and had a go at a few as I read through and saved some to come back to. Even though some of them weren't really for me, there's something for everyone in this book. I loved how some of them focused on character development and not just story or plot.

This is what every aspiring author needs to jump start their creativity. It is the perfect guide with prompts to get your imagination and your writing skills in action. Created like a daily journal there are 365 very unique writing prompts to get your creativity going. Each daily page also provides space to write to help challenge you further to see if you can answer the prompt in the space provided. I was so pleased with the prompts and how imaginative they are. You can work on them daily in order or pick out those that catch your attention and elaborate on them. I received this as an ARC and I decided to pick out my favorites. I loved how the prompts help you to improve your skills, like writing with details and paying attention to every aspect of a story. They also challenge you to try different styles of writing that you may not have considered writing in before, like mystery, comedy and a bit of fairy tale. I highly recommend this journal for any author, even if you have been writing for many years. This book is perfect to get imaginations and creativity going while helping you focus on developing your writing skills.

This is a good basic book for beginners but not all that practical as a ebook it didn’t work well for me like some other writing prompt books and the. Cover could have been more appealing but on the whole it’s fine.

This guided journal contains a range of creative writing prompts that vary significantly in form, style, and content. Some are light-hearted, whereas others are more serious, and the book appears to contain a decent mix of both. It would be a fun, helpful exercise for someone looking to move past writer’s block, to boost their creativity, to use with a class, etc.

This book is absolutely priceless! The prompts had me giggling and reaching for my pen before I even finished reading it. Some are thought-provoking, some lighthearted, and others laugh-out-loud funny, so much so that I started reading it out loud to my family and we all began plotting mini stories. I received it as an eBook, but I will be buying a hard copy to add to my writing books. This is a wonderful resource for anyone that writes, is thinking about writing, or for any creative mind, really. The prompts invite you to think about things on the slant, and anyone will benefit from that.

The idea is strong, but I find the writing prompts in writing magazines much stronger than the ones offered here. They may work better for others.

I was intrigued by the possibilities of this book. I received an advanced reader's copy on Kindle from the publisher through NetGalley. This is my own opinion about the content.
I think this is a good way to help give writers various ideas to get creativity flowing. There are 365 varied prompts which can work for fiction to personal journaling. Personally, there were a few that were off the wall, but those prompts could inspire a science fiction story. Many of them definitely got me thinking, gave me inspiration.
I will be able to use a notebook to accompany the prompts but recommend this journal. This is an excellent source for anyone who has a desire to write or journal. If a prompt doesn't fit a personal view just use the creativity and make it right for you.

ONE CREATIVE WRITING PROMPT A DAY by Lita Kurth is self-described as "A Journal to Build Your Craft and Unlock Your Inner Storyteller." Although there are plenty of choices for this type of book, this one seems quite strong and I would like to see a print version. Kurth has taught at De Anza College and believes "it's amazing what you can write in 15 minutes, given low stakes and a free spirit." She tempts readers with a variety of tasks; one quick random example is "Write about two Parisians fighting over an umbrella. Include the color turquoise and a gust of wind." Another time she instructs budding writers to "Describe an apartment using as many words that begin with F as possible. Notice the effect of these sounds on your prose." As I browsed Kurth's prompts, I felt myself wishing I had time to imagine life from the perspective of an abandoned pick-up truck or a robot in the year 2100. Kurth's text could be strengthened (or supplemented) with more guidance on developing specific writing skills. Also, some may argue that her clever prompts may require the writer to do too much research, but I thought that she was very imaginative and would be successful in sparking some writing activity. It might be fun to have students try several prompts in Chat-GPT and then work at improving those draft essays, too. Frankly, writing practice from varied perspectives seems critical in helping all of us to build empathy and to better appreciate the "other" in our lives. The New York Times just published a thoughtful guest essay by Rachel Kadish on teaching writing exercises:

This book shares 365 writing prompts, and they reflect many different genres, styles, and approaches. Some of them are thoughtful and introspective, while others are zany and bizarre, and even though the prompts won't all appeal to everyone, anyone can find something here that inspires them.

The author provides enough specific details in most of the prompts that you're building on what she gives you, instead of creating something from scratch. I've seen a lot of vague, one-sentence prompts before that don't inspire creativity, but these have enough going on that it's not difficult to imagine more. However, on the flip side, these aren't prompts that someone can easily and natural translate into their current work in progress. The vast majority of these are prompts for writing separate short stories.

The author intends for people to create their stories directly in the book, but even though there is lined space for writing after each prompt, I don't think it's practical. Even with my really small handwriting, I would struggle to write anything substantial on the page. In many cases, there's really only space to describe a story idea, instead of actually dramatizing it. I think that this is more practical as a repository of ideas than a book to actually write in.
